That is why I don't do the temp thing, I tried it twice and both times it just drove me nuts. Ollie is doing nothing, she must have ovulated late too. she is such a hussy, she will be flagging from day one, so I can't go by when she is receptive. I never see any blood with her, so I am just never sure when she starts her cycle. |
I had one that tied on the 24th day by accident and had pups 60 days after that. If I had been trying on 12-16 days I would have been really worried. The next time I breed her on day 12 and she didn't take. I am trying to breed her later this time but afraid I will miss it. This is her 16th day. Can sperm live 3 or 5 days? I have heard both. |
I have read that it can live 5 to 7 days. |

We had a scare with Livi around 10:30 tonight. She was resting under the ottoman and I have been letting her because it's right here with us and she feels comfortable there. I typically do not wake her when she is under it, but something told me to check on her. She was shaking (badly) and she felt cold. I took her temp and it was down to 96.8. :( I rushed her into the smallest bathroom in our home...it's ALWAYS hot in there...told Geoff to call the emergency vet clinic to see what they suggest. They told us that we needed to get her on a heating pad so I wrapped her up and held her and also gave her Nutrical. We waited another 30 minutes and I took her temp again...this time it had dropped to 96.4 and this was with being wrapped in a heating pad. :( Geoff then called the emergnecy clinic back and asked if we could bring her in because she was shaking NONSTOP and we couldn't get temp up. They told him NO..... They just said that all they would do is what we were currently doing and that they do not treat pregnant dogs...unless she was in distress for atleast two hours. I was flipping out at this point because Livi looked so weak so I had Geoff page the repro vet that we decided to not go to anymore....he and the emergency vet clinic are the only ones that you can call in the middle of the night. I kept her wrapped in the pad and I did get her temp up to 99.0. By the time the vet called back, she was doing pretty good. He said that she is just doing what is normal and is just starting the labor process. Has anyone else heard of such a low temp? She is resting again and she has maintained a temp around 99ish and she has also had some contractions. I am worried that once labor gets into full swing, she will drop down to the low temp again. Advice? |
Sorry Tammy no advice, I have not experienced that. I hope that it is just part of her labor and that she has some healthy babies soon, We have fingers and a bunch of paws crossed here with a prayer for you and Livi. Stay strong Livi you can do it :) |
Tammy, not to worry, it's normal here too! One of our females always does the shaking really badly. I don't do the temperature thing, because it never seems to work too good. She will shake until she gets the first pup out, and then she doesn't shake anymore. WELL, the last time, she shook the day after having the pups and for about another 3 days. Took her to the vet, and they couldn't find anything wrong with her, and said it will work itself out -- they were right, it did in about those 3 days. Hang in there, and we hope to hear in the next day or so, that Livi had her pups. |
still thinking of you all! |
Well, I'm awake and checking on Livi first thing. Wow, your episode last night would have had me freaking too! Sounds pretty scary, though I wonder if I would have attributed the shaking to being in labor. Was she having any sort of contractions during that time? In any case you did good in getting her warmed up giving her nutri-cal,and calling the vet(s). I say :thumbdown to the e-vets..........what's the point of them if you can't even take her in? Geez! For all our sakes...................but of course, mostly for you and Livi, I sure hope she has them today. |
Just checking in to see how Livi is this morning? Any changes with Ollie? |
Good morning! Yes, that episode last night worried me BADLY! I don't think that the shivering was labor related because it stopped as soon as her temp went back up. It was the most helpless feeling...calling the emergency clinic and hearing the (rude) girl on the phone saying, "No, we won't treat her...we don't treat pregnanies." My husband is a VERY VERY calm and easy-going guy...never gets mad at anyone, but he was like, "WHAT?! WHAT'S THEIR PROBLEM....WHY NOT?!!!" In the background, while I was on the phone with her. Anyway, she has been having contractions this morning, digging, heavy panting. I offered her food but she wants nothing to do with it! I also offered her water because she has been panting and whining so much. She won't take it either. I am not worried about her eating right now, but I am concerned about her not drinking with the excessive panting that she's doing. How should I handle this? I did syringe some into her mouth, but this upset her...should I still do it? Okay, I am going to start my kiddos some breakfast but will keep you guys posted on what's happening. Is it safe to assume that we will have new puppies today?? :) |
