| new to breeding I have a male and female yorkie. they are both 2 years old. dixie hasnt been in heat for awhile now, and i was wondering if kiko being around her, would it throw her into heat? im guessing no, cause hes been around for a week now. (kiko is actually my cousins yorkie). they both have pretty colors and i think they would make great puppies, and they both weight about 5 lbs. how many pups do you guys think dixie could have? when she goes into heat is there anything i can do to help to get them to mate? LOL perhaps leave for awhile so they could be alone. LOL |

| Whoh..... First of all I am glad that you are asking questions. You have a whole lot to learn about the yorkie and breeding before doing it. There are some great books out there about breeding and some great ones about yorkies (you usually cannot find the best ones in pet stores)... One good one is The Complete Yorkshire Terrier by Gordon and Bennett. There is a little section in there about breeding too. First off you have to make sure that your yorkies are to standard and worth breeding, as well as test them to make sure hopefully they are sound and healthy enough to be breed and not pass on bad problems to pups. A regular health exam is not enough to find out. There is more to it, such as blood tests, petellas exams, etc... You also need to check their relatives history - what is in their generic make up. How are their parents, uncles, aunts, grandparents, etc... You want to know as much as possible about their family tree, so you can make sure nothing bad might pop up in their pups. Breeding is very serious business and you need to know as much as possible for the pups' sake and your dog's sake. You cannot just put them in a room together and hope they breed - this is dangerous and not good for either of them. So you need to get some books and do your research and learn. Just being on YT is not to best way to learn - reason is because there is so much to it that hitting a key board can do in a few minutes. Best of luck to you and happy research. Research and learning is a lot of fun and very interesting. I am sure you will enjoy learning. Here are a few links about the Yorkshire Terrier Standard: http://www.akc.org/breeds/yorkshire_terrier/ http://www.ytca.org/mainview.htm http://www.ytca.org/standard2.html Last edited by topknot; 10-03-2009 at 06:49 AM. |

| Welcome to the breeding world. Like Topnot said you have a lot to learn. Even the most experienced breeders are still learning. I'm new to breeding yorkies as well, but have delievered many litters of other animals. Needless to say, I have found so much information on this site, but it can only give you so much. I have done extensive research on other websites, books, genetics, and other breeders. If you really serious about breeding find yourself a great mentor that breeds yorkies, knows genetics, the standards for yorkies, and knows what to look for in a great breeding stock prospect. Hope all goes well for you, and many of us here will be willing to help answer your questions.

| Usually every 6 - 8 months. Some go longer - it depends on the dog. |

| Depends on the yorkie. Some go into heat ever six months. Some can go a year. My girl had her first heat when she was 9 months and then her second heat 6 months later. She has gone every six months since. But it all depends on your girl.

Just know that what ever your reason - just be prepared to pay for c-secitions, health exams, shots, etc.... It cost a lot to breed and have pups. I have had two c-sections with my dogs that are 5 pounds each. It was not their size or with them why they ended up with c-sections. Both times was just due to pups - one pup came out of its sack inside mom and my other girl/mom had a pup trying to go up the other horn during contractions and then stopped everything up. In both cases it was touch and go with my moms after the c-section. I had to stay home from work with them and nurse them back to health and had several vet visit after the c-section for antibiotic shots and fluids. So this was not cheap. Both times it was after hours - seems normal when they go into labor - always after hours. Also I had to hand feed one of those pups from the c-section around the clock (every 2-3 hours) - yeap more time home from work. She made it to day 5 and then we lost her. It was very hard to go through this, especially when you get so close to them with handfeeding them. It was very hard. She was just too weak after being in the canal so long before the c-section could be done. I had several vet vsits with her too and still lost her. Be sure too that the pups they have are healthy and you have a respsonsiblity to the new owners that they are healthy, so you have health exams and tests to do too for the pups before they even leave your home. Hope there is nothing wrong with any of them. So whether you are doing this for experience - there is a lot involved in breeding even for once and not cheap. Talk to your vet and see what figures s/he can give you for costs. This way you will have a number in your head and bank account to be prepared for. And discuss with them what can happen medically, so you can be prepared. All of us here at YT are here for you and just want the best for you. I hope I gave you some things to think about and will help you be prepared. Last edited by topknot; 10-03-2009 at 07:33 AM. | |

If this is not your reason I really would be interested in what experience you are interested in.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Tina gave you some great advice! breeding yorkies is tough. so many things can go wrong. Not only will you spend lots of money, you may also lose your female and her pups.
