Gosh Kara- you have just had the worst time with this whelp- I am so sorry girl and I think you need a new vet sweetie - even though now is a stressful time to look for one. hugs |
Hope things turn around for the better now. I'm glad you are getting good suggestions. I hope the puppies start gaining. Good luck! :) |
Did you check with the vet about the antibotics and see if they need to be changed? Please keep in touch with us to let us know if the babies start nursing better. |

Amoxicillin will do nothing, if there is an infection. |
Any antibiotic can cause stomach upset, nausea, upset stomach, etc. I thought he didn't put her on anything though...just something for anemia? Anyway, it is very apparent that if the vet just said that he/she couldn't figure out what was wrong with her and just said to watch her and didn't advise anything on the pups or anything...you just need a new vet, hands down. Vets are everywhere and its not hard to find a new one. I cannot imagine a vet saying that a temp of 105 is ok and just send a dog home, especially a dog that has just whelped unless it was a pretty crappy vet. You are at high risk of losing mom and the pups in this situation. If the mom really has an infection and is on Baytril, mom could be ok,but the pups? I would get a second opinion ASAP...I wouldn't wait till Monday, or even tomorrow. |
well, the thing with my vet is they have a lot of different vetrinarians. it just depends on what day you go to the vet and you will get a different vet. I called the vet to ask them about the baytril and if they give me the same answer then I will call another vet. I did pick up some calcium so I am giving her that. I also got some goats milk so hopefully that will help as well. she is definitely more concerned about her babies so I am thinking she is feeling a little better. she is also drinking plenty of water. I picked up some dog food that someone recommended and she is eating it little by little. I really appreciate everyone's advice thanks Kara |

So, you are going to a Clinic type Hospital. Try and find a one or two practice vet. Develop a relationship....so, that if you ever have another litter, you have their cell phone # or home # should you need them on off hours. |
yea I just talked with a different vet at the same clinic and he said that he does not recommend having her on the baytril and that I should put her on clavomox. so, I am taking her in soon to get a check up and to get that medicine. I will never be seeing the vet that prescribed me the baytril again. I do have a couple of vets that I really like and am starting to trust more so I think if I ever go there again, I am only going to see them. It is so upsetting, the vet did not even tell me that there are some risks with the puppies are even mention that I should hand feed them with baytril. |
That's a shame, because hand feeding them is going to be a royal pain in the behind. You won't get much sleep either. It would be so much better if the mother could nurse them. I personally don't know what risks to the babies are associated with the baytril. Can someone let me know, please! |

Cinnamon seems to be doing better. her discharge also is lessening and the puppies are gaining weight again :D. hopefully things will progressively get better. now my only obstacle is getting her to eat good. |
oh and I am also going to complain to the corporate headquarters about the vet that gave these things to Cinnamon and I will never use her again. |

Baytril has the same affect on nursing puppies as penicillin....fading puppy syndrome. |
