okay... I need everyone's help again... Cinnamon's temp. is down to 103.2 so that is good, but now she is soo lethargic. all she does all day is just lay there and if you pick up her leg or something, it is just limp. the only time she gets up is to drink water and you would think fluids is a good thing but I am telling you, she is just drinking too much. I know how much she usually drinks and this is just soooo much... I know that sometimes that is a symptom of something I just don't know what. also, when she gets up to drink, she acts so disoriented and clumsy. she will just stand there for a while staring at her water wobbling back and forth and then drink and then stand there again and then drink. it is the weirdest thing. she has just been acting "out of it" for the past day. advice?? oh, and she is also not really caring so much about her puppies which is really strange for her. the past couple of days, she has been such a good mom. |
I would be worried about eclampsia. Are you giving her calcium? My vet told me a major symptom of eclampsia is either aggression or at least dis interest in the babies. Also, the wobblieness you are describing sounds like it as well. I'm really concerned for you. There is a video on youtube which shows a dog with eclampsia. I would also be sure you got some calcium into her. Are you giving her cottage cheese or something like that? After Zoe had her pups, I gave her cottage cheese or the whelping pudding at each meal - 3-4 times a day. They do drink alot as well with her milk coming in, that may be normal but the other things concern me. I think you might need to make another trip to the vet or at least a call and ask them.... |
Congradulations on the new babies. I am so sorry little Cinnamon is sick. I have no advice because I would have no idea what to do. Sounds like everyone has given great advice but with her acting the way she is I would take her to the vet asap. Maybe see another vet if you can if you feel uncomfortable going back to him. But, sounds to me like she really needs to see the doctor. Good luck and hope everything is okay with that little girl and her babies. |
someone from yorkietalk is sending me her leftover calcium tabs but they won't get here till maybe saterday... is there anything else I can use in the meantime?? like tums maybe?? if so, how do I give it to her? |

the vet said there wasn't much he could do because he could not figure out what was wrong with her... he gave me a little bit of calcium and said if she wasn't better tomorrow then to bring her in again... I fed her some ice cream and she seems to be doing a little better. anyways, I just weighed the pups today and one of them hasn't gained any weight within the last two days and some of them have actually lost weight since yesterday. I am trying to bottle feed them as well because I don't think Cinnamon is making enough milk but they always seem content. I would think if they were still hungry they would cry. any one have other suggestions to help them gain weight? |
So sorry! Oh I am so sorry you are having such difficulties. I am feed Lexi the welping pudding whenever she wants it, whenever she starts to pant right in her nursing position with her new eight puppies. All the puppies except one has gained weight since their birth yesterday morning, so that one and another are going to get alone time with Lexi in the morning. I am praying for all of you. |

Send a PM to BJH....she lives in your area and can help you with picking a vet and feeding the pups. |

Do you not realize the severity of the situation that your girl and puppies are in? |
I wouldn't be waiting to get calcium in the mail. And I wouldn't want a vet who said "there wasn't much he could do because he could not figure out what was wrong with her". He sounds strange to me! Her temp is still high and I hope you get her some help soon. There are so many things that can go wrong from the moment of conception until the puppies are weaned. I hope you come on soon to let us know what's happening. Good luck to you and Cinnamon and her puppies. PS. You don't want the puppies to lose more than 10% of their birth weight - that can be another problem. Do what Mary said and get the goat's milk. |
this thread is so stressful! i hope everything is better and mom and pups are all eating enough! |
GO TO THE VET!!!!!! I would go to or call any vet until I get an answer or help! |
OMG! I am so sorry I haven't responded yet, my internet has been down and just came back online. I will definitely get the goats milk and try that. should I get like organic goats milk? the nipple that I have is very stiff and the pups are having a hard time getting anything out of it, so I think I am going to go by babies r us and get a preemie baby bottle. I think there nipples are softer. Cinnamon seems to be a little more active. I was able to get her to eat some ice cream, tums, and nutri-cal. everything else I have tried to give her, she won't eat. thank you for all of ya'lls concern, and again I am sorry to have kept ya'll waiting. thanks Kara |
Just to let you all know, I just talked to Kara and it does seem that the momma is doing better. Her temperature is under 103 now. The pups seem to be satisfied but not gaining a whole lot but that could be because mom had been sick. Cinnamon is still not wanting to eat a lot so I gave her a few ideas on getting her to eat. Hopefully things will start looking better. |
Kara mentioned that the vet has the momma on the antibiotic Baytril. From what I just read it says not to give that to nursing mommas. Also some of the side effects are loss of appetite and drowsiness. Could this antibiotic be causing the momma to not eat? The only antibiotic I ever use on a nursing momma is amoxicillin. Maybe she should ask the vet about getting amoxicillin instead of the Baytril. |
