Any Suggestions???

Emma had her puppies two days ago and today she has been panting alot. I have been giving her calcium but she didn't eat till late this afternoon when I changed her food from dry to soft food she also drank a little today, but had not in awhile. When I changed her to the soft food I had to hold it in front of her to eat and had to do the same to get her to drink (when she did drink she wouldn't stop for a while). She seems to be very nervous about getting away from the puppies. This morning when I got up, I tried to get her to go out to the and she came out to the door but then the puppies started whining and she refused to go out and made a bee line for the puppies. When she does finally go out she will pee and run right to the door and I have to move her back into the grass to get her to poop. Do you think it is her nerves I have a vet appointment for her Monday but wanting to see if anyone had any suggestions

Ok I just read the thread Question-Newborns and it seems like her dog is going through just about the same thing and that makes me feel a little better that she is not alone has anyone else ever experienced this?

Cassie's pups are 4 weeks old, and she just recently stopped panting!

She was vomiting and had diarrhea (bad enough to reduce her milk supply) for almost two days after the babies were born. I took her to the vet, of course, and they ran practically every blood test known to man (at least that's what I thought when I got the bill!) to find nothing wrong - might have been all the yucky stuff she ate during the delivery and after. My point in telling you this is that we know the panting was not related to a low calcium level.

That's may not be the case with every panting dog, but if you have talked to your vet, and he/she is not concerned, then maybe some dogs just do that. I know your appt. is on Monday, but did you call and ask him/her?

Our vet thought it might be hormonal, and remembering how I felt after having 5 kiddos, I tend to agree. LOL In humans the hormones take such a dive after birth, that it really takes a toll on us; maybe it's the same with dogs????

I hope she feels better; I look forward to hearing what the vet said.

I also know most mamas won't want to leave their babies - not the case here, as we have to put Cassie in with the pups to nurse, but it sounds like your girl is acting normally.

Bella would not eat at all unless we hand fed her only her favorite foods. Bella was hand fed chicken and rice mixed with kibble and scrambled egg. We did this daily about every couple of hours until little by little she ate what we left her just outside her whelping box (first 4 days). We supplemented with a calcium supplement daily and Nutrical every couple of hours. We gave her Esbilac with her food the first couple of days per the vet as a supplement for Bella.
We had wee pads but she also refused to go potty so we picked her up took her outside and she would do it all VERY quickly and straight back to the puppies.
She also panted ALOT but the vet said it was normal and it did stop. After about a week she lightened up alot and now is getting to be more her normal little self. She is starting to want to be with the family more now (Pups are 12 days old) but if pups cry she goes right to them. I am starting to relax myself and not worry so much.

I always monitor my moms temp after a whelp. Anything 103 and higher - rush to the vet. You want to make sure infection does not set in.

I also hand feed and give water with karo in it with a syringe. Moms don't want to leave their babies. I had a litter last night and for breakfast she ate 2 scrambled eggs, for lunch she had boiled chicken breast and inbetween she has has nutrical and the water in the syringe. I also give whelping pudding, although this mom isn't loving it like my others.

Emma is finally doing better she had the babies on the 9th and they have almost DOUBLED their weight the smallest was 5.3 oz and she is now the biggest at 9.2 oz can you believe that. You guys are right she just wanted to be with the puppies today she has spent more time away from them but never gets to far. It was nice to have her back in my lap.
