What do you think of this breeder? |
Hi Marilize, it's Sheilagh from Joburg. How are you doing girl? I have heard of this breeder, and I believe she has had a win or two at shows in Johannesburg, but I would not buy from her. The fact that she breeds "teacups" and that their adult weight is around 600g scares the life out of me! She also claims that she specifically breeds them small.:( If you are looking for a healthy, beautiful dog, here are the names of two very reputable breeders in S.A Carol at Countryblu Yorkshire Terriers and Pam at Brolea Yorkshire Terriers. Their dogs are within the standard, but certainly not "teacups" They both have many champions in their breeeding program and are very selective about new owners. If you are interested, let me know and I will PM you their numbers. |
Hi, I just looked at the site and to be honest it makes me very uneasy. There is technically no breed of teacup or pocket yorkie, this is just someone breeding dogs to be much smaller than the breed standard. I personally can not imagine owning a dog that small all the health risks would make me paranoid. If there is one think I have learned with owning a small dog and Milo is 61/.2 lbs (not that small compared to most) Is that smaller the dog the BIGGER the problems. A good example would be Some one had a bag of motrin in there pocketbook and it must have fallen out of there purse and I was not 100 percent sure if Milo got into it because they were all crushed, so off to the Vet we go to get his stomach pumped, you just can't be too careful with these dogs |
Thank you for your comments. I am not looking for a puppy at the moment, but I have seen this breeder so many times and now she is adding a biewer and apparently, her intent is to breed splitters: a biewer with a yorkie! To make them more affordable! She is also planning to breed them as small as possible. Apparently, she has 60 dogs!! How can you care for 60 dogs in your home? You can't! I would really like to do something to raise awareness about what this woman is doing to the breed and to the dogs! If one of her adults reach a weight of more than 900g (32 ounces!!!!), she discards the dog from her breeding program! |
Ditto what the others have said. "Teacups"...not a good sign. :thumbdown |
Let me get this right she is breeding females under 2lbs??? Is this right?? |

RUN THE OTHER WAY!!!!:eek::eek: Pockets and teacups, sheesh A real breeder in SA: Welcome to Amoureux - Biewer A'la Pom Pon |

Wow! Apparently associated with a Biewer Club in America!!!??? What club would endorse breeding tinies like that????????????????? |
I agree with the others, run the other way. Did you see this, CHINCHILLAS. They also sell Chinchillas, perhaps a "pocket yorkie" is really a Chinchilla! |
After looking through the whole site, I could not find any photos of the adults, the ones they breed. The whole site is one huge red flag :thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown |

Oh, I know Amoureux breeders! We chat regularly. We were chatting about this woman this morning. I think it is terrible, but you know what? I get a lot of comments that they want a yorkie like Cash, but way smaller - preferably half his size. He just topped 10lbs at 2 1/2 years and he is big for a yorkie, but I wouldn't know how to care for a small yorkie if I had not had him. June seems like she is gonna be about 2 lbs and I am desperately hoping that she will get a lot bigger! There are just so many people (especially girls) who ask me if June is full grown!! She is 12 weeks old and 32 ounces. She = Full Grown!? No way, I think if you want something that small, get a hamster. The hamster will be happy and healthy with no health issues due to bad breeding!! I apologize if I offend anyone with tiny yorkies, but JMO. June is so tiny that we are all hoping and praying that she gets to be at least 2lbs or hopefully 3. I absolutely love bigger yorkies! Cash is such a joy to have around and he is even excelling in agility. My big teapot is cuddling on my lap and nothing could make me happier! Ps. It is quite an art to keep all of him on your lap when you are seated on a barstool at the kitchen counter! |
Well, if she doesn't have a breeding pair then she purchased that baby.. so SOMEBODY didn't do a proper job of screening this new owner. We as a group, pride ourselves in really checking out new Biewer parents.. someone did not do their job or was deceived. It's usually difficult to purchase Biewers with breeding rights from most breeders. The hoops that one needs to jump through are usually pretty high, obviously, these weren't high enough! There are not very many people who call this breed a Biewer Terrier. They are not known by that name in their country of origin or anywhere else in the world, so she must have purchased that puppy in the US.. If looking in SA, I also suggest Amoureux - Biewer A'la Pom Pon -great lady, great dogs.. it will be a great experience. -Diana :animal-pa |

I think she bought her Biewer puppy from another breeder in S.A. I was surprised to learn that there are about 10 breeders here in S.A. Some good, some not so good!:( I got my yorkies from Countryblu Yorkshire Terriers - In pursuit of perfection and index , unfortunately they do not breed Biewers, as I know I could trust these ladies. I have had a look at Amoureux web site.. her dogs are beautiful! I have been very keen to get a Biewer, this is where I will look when the time is right. Thanks for posting her info. |
Sadly.. as the Breed grows in popularity, we will see these types of "greeders" popping up around the world. She is a member of this Club Welcome to the Biewer (Yorkshire) Terrier Club of South Africa | biewer yorkshire terriers, biewer yorkies, biewer breed, biewer terriers, yorkie club, biewer breed club | Pretoria South Africa  |
wow, the site of those tiny puppies made me sick. i couldn't imagine having a dog that small in my house. i had a hard enough time keeping track of morgan as a baby and she was 2lbs at 13 weeks. these pups are 2lbs full grown. ugh... i can't imagine. that's just way to small. granted she fully warns people that these dogs are not for everyone on her website but i have to imagine and many of her puppies that were sold have been hurt in some way because of their size....unless the new owners carry the dog everywhere (which isn't good for the dog either) I had morgan at the dog park this weekend and people kept asking me how old she was. i said 3 and most thought i meant 3 months because she was so small (4.5lbs). i told them no, 3 years. at 4.5lbs she's enough to worry about, its got to be 100 times more worrisome for people with even smaller dogs. |
Interesting thread Sheilagh...I looked at the biewer site.. wow what beauties they are... anne |

Quote taken from the website "NB. WAITING LIST: PUPS WILL BE SUPPLIED IN THE ORDER IN WHICH THE DEPOSITS WERE RECEIVED." spoken like a true greeder.. it all comes down to supply and demand:eek: :thumbdown |
Is there anything that can be done to either stop what she is doing or to raise awareness (without being sued - she is apparently very trigger happy)? It breaks my heart that she is doing all of this for the money and she doesn't even care for her dogs! Is there someone I can report her to? |

I need to go back and read on that site again! |

Gee Marilize, I don't know.... I'm sure you must have seen so many "strange" looking yorkies around S.A. Don't get me wrong, I adore all yorkies, but just by looking at some of them, you know they came from bad breeders, either greedy show or back yard. I have given up telling people the ills of "tea cups" they look at me as though I'm mad... I mean "who am I to talk as I have a LARGE boy!" I even got kicked out of a pet shop for airing my views! What we need here in S.A. is a forum like YT, that all of us South Africans here on this forum can join and try to educate the unsuspecting buyers. There are quite a lot of us now, but I certainly don't have a clue as to starting or running a site:confused: One of the vets I use has three yorkies with brain damage that he rescued from a BYB! If you come up with any ideas, let me know.. I'll help where I can.:) |
Oh, something else.. you got me going here... just because I have a girl and a boy, every second person I meet asks if I breed with them:mad: or won't I please breed them.. they want a puppy because mine are so beautiful. When I tell them they were sold to me with breeding restrictions they get all uppity and say "how can a breeder do that? You should be allowed to breed your own dogs!" :thumbdown Well sorry for them , they are both neutered and even if they weren't I wouldn't anyway! Sometimes I explain the reasons and some days I just give up! |
I would really like to start a club like YTCA here in SA. Or maybe start an affiliate club of YTCA. I really think that SA needs to open their eyes to what they are doing to yorkies. There are so many greeders and BYBs here, it is unbelievable. I am going to contact the YTCA and see what they think. Either we can be an affiliate of theirs or we can start a similar club for Yorkies, since there isn't one in SA. So, all SA YTalkers, are you in? |
I'm in!:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
I am waiting to hear from the YTCA. I have a friend who is in IT and another who is a graphic designer for websites. I can recruit both of them to help us set up a site. I was thinking in the lines of yorkietalk mixed with the YTCA website, i.e. a forum with information pages as well. The info will be on the home page and the forum can be on additional pages. What do you think? I am going to need all the South African YTalkers to help me with this! I am posting another thread in the General Discussion forum to ask other South Africans to help. |
Great stuff Marilize! Or as Lauren would say.....Lekker! I will try to find all our S.A ladies' pages and drop them a note about your post. I am a moderator on another forum, and would be happy to help you.:) Oh my goodness, my hubby is going to divorce me.... I spend so much time on forums as it is! :D |

When examining the "Club" site further.. many things are becoming much clearer!! What a shame this wonderful breed is being sold down the river in SA. It amazes me what people will believe. -Diana :animal-pa |

Talking about greeders, I know of a couple of Biewer Yorkshire a la Pom Pon, or Biewer a la Pom Pon breeders saying how much they love their dogs and they ALL live in their home, and ................ Come to find out most of their beloved dogs live with other people, and they just bring in the money from the breeding's. Long distance love I guess. There is still only one club World wide that has the co-originator of the breed's endorsement. Anyone saying they are following the dream and standard of Mr. and Mrs. Biewer are not telling the truth. |
