Pups tail now 4 days old was ill vet says wait till monday . Thats 6 days old. Im so worried that the pain will be to much. Pup was fading, got him back to health. Could not do it when Ill so vet says wait till Monday. That brings them to 6 days. I think if I do this I will have to make them a bit longer, because their tails become thicker. Size of nickal maybe. Any feed back would be appreciated. I do not like cutting on the pups at all. But know it has to be done. Blondschillin

pups tail By the way your yorkie looks really cute with a tail. I wish no one cut their tails but since they do I have read one third off two thirds left on. Yorkie breeders does this sound correct!!! Blondschillin

| 2/3 of the tail left on? That does not sound correct at all. I could be wrong, I have never docked tails before, but it seems that maybe 2/3 off 1/3 on would sound more correct to me, or maybe even less than that.

the tail is cut right at the brown spot on the bottom or just a hair longer toward the end. that is the proper way and I have docked many tails at six days old for one reason or another and it wasn't any different than docking the ones at four days old. but A yorkie with a full tail is cute and they are even starting to show them that way now. Actually, I clamp the tail right at the brown spot and then cut on the side toward the end. Last edited by Sugar's Mom; 05-09-2009 at 12:53 PM.

According to the vets chart it is 1/3 of the tail left but just about at the brown spot is a good place. I like them just about a puppy hair past the brown spot.

thanks for the information went to just answer.dog and Im reading it right now it does say Take one third off. says 4 inch tail when dog full grown is correct. Show dogs how long do you think their tails are.? They look longer than my yorkies tails. My yorks were cut about the size you said . Puppys will be tommarrow. blondschillin

My vet in Canada does a perfect tail in my opinion... the vet here in florida made tails too short for me.. so I told her to go a tad farther past the brown.. she did that one Lisa`s piper..so then I said again a tad longer for the second one.. and I like mariska`s tail.. it is what it looks like when my vet does it.. yet he says he does it right at the tip of the brown.. I had Gracies done late.. as she was not big enough nor strong enough on friday..so it was done on the monday..we begun to tube feed her..and by the monday she had gained enough weight to be done.. other wise it would not have... she did ok.. but was very small and we tube fed every two hours night and day for two weeks.. I would like to say.. last spring we had 4 babies.. all healthy.. no crying.. tails erect.. had the tails docked on friday night.. lost one on sunday morning and one on monday morning.. I was shocked.. same vet I always use..they cried for hours and hours non stop..they always looked like they were suckling when not crying.. but I know now that they had to have been in too much pain to have strength to suckle hard enough.. they just faded so darn fast.. over night.. anne

Yeah me too. Tia has her dew claws and she's so tiny as an adult. It's a pain in the butt to trim, especially with all the hair she has. I'm always afraid she's going to catch it and hurt herself. Dew claws to me would have been removed for safety reasons and tails would have stayed as it's just for look. Glad he's alright. Elaine
