Mama wants nothing to do with her babies! What do we do? Princess delivered her puppies this morning, 4 girls, (not even one little boy, dang!) and when the first one came out, (she was the largest) Princess jumped out of her box and onto my bed and looked at me like she was in trouble and terrified. I had to break bag open and take care of puppy, all the yucky stuff I really was counting on her to do ;) I had to keep making her get back in the box, she was practically doing flips to get out. Then she popped two out within 20 minutes, then the last one about 40 minutes later. I have been trying to get her to let them nurse for about two hours now, and she keeps running away from them. Is this normal for first time moms, cuz the babies are really crying, and she keeps hiding under the bed. |
It's very important that the puppies get the mothers milk, especially the first few days. Someone needs to hold her on her side to let those babies nurse or they will certainly die within a few hours. When their blood sugar drops thay can go into seizures and die. You must talk softly to the mom and make nursing a nice experience. Give her some med. rare steak, tiny pieces at a time while the pups nurse. Train her to become a mom and I'm sure she will catch on. |

Train her to become a mom and I'm sure she will catch on. If she isn't licking the puppies bottoms to stimulate them to pee and poo, then get a wet warm cloth and rub their bottoms every couple of hours till she takes over. Also buy a tube fo Nutri-Cal for puppies and give the pups about the size of a tiny pea every three hours. These few days are very critical for them, so stay on top of things. By the way, how old is the mom to these pups? |
Once she nurses them a little, that will allow some oxytocin to run through her system and possibly kick in her mothering instincts. (released in the brain) Try to keep calm, and the steak idea may work well, I would act quick or get those pups warm with a heating blanket and as a second option have someone get you store-bought puppy milk to hand feed them if need be. Try your best not to scare her and force her to do much without being very calm. I would hold my girl there, but do it very calmly so she knows what you will expect her to do. Keep us posted.:( |
She is growling at and trying to bite the puppies!!!! I cant get her to stop growling at them, what happened to my angel?:eek: I dont want her to hurt them...We are trying to feed her while they nurse, but she is suddenly insane! |
OK, I am trying to calm down now, she is still insane, but I will have hubby run to store for the formula, I should have had it already just in case. We see vet at three so if she doesnt eat them by then hopefully it will be allright |
Oh yeah, I forgot, she is almost three years old. First (and only, I suspect) litter. |
She's sounds traumatized. I was going to suggest that you put them in a pen together and watch them closely but that doen't sound like such a good idea if she is acting that way. For now make sure they are plenty warm and get try to get some puppy milk from the store. I hope someone else comes by with more experience but it sounds like you may have to raise pups by yourself if she doesn't get the hang of this. Sorry, i am sure this is not what you expected to happen.:( Contact your vet and let him know what's happening asap. They may have suggestions for you. |
I went through this 2yrs ago, I called the vet he had me come in for pills to make her relax and she let them nurse, i had to give it to her twice after that she was ok. Betty & Micah my love:aimeeyork |
oh, doggie zanax!! I hope that works, she is growling at me too cuz I keep trying to get out from under the bed. She does come out when I say lets go outside, then I shut the door so she cant get at puppies. Now she is trying to get in. Women!! Sometimes we just cant figure out what we want! I feel sorry for her.:( |
She should not be allowed to go under the bed. Didd you fix up a whelping area for her that is contained so she can't run all the place? by all means watch her closely. But I had this happen with a first time mom last year and I literally had to put her in the whelping box every hour or so and HOLD HER DOWN so the kids could eat. The rest of the time, she stood on her hind legs in the x-pen outside the whelping box and barked to get out. |
I guess she's gone to vet now.I have been following this along.Hope things are better. Sheila |
Just got back from the vet, and guess what? THERE ARE TWO MORE PUPPIES STUCK IN THERE!!! He is doing a c-section right now, and told me to go and buy formula, as I may have to hand feed for a while. Hubby is gonna try to attach pics, I dont know how. Wow, what a day! |
OMG! I really hope everything smooths out after today for you, what a crazy time you've had. |
That poor little girl, no wonder she was acting crazy. You must be frantic with these little ones to take care of. Sending prayer's for you and mommy. I hope everything works out perfectly. Do you have family or friends who can assist you in the feedings until mommy get's home? I hope you get help. |
Oh my GOD! I'm hitting the prayers RIGHT NOW!!!! |
well I hope all ends well. How many puppies in all did she end up having? I do hope that things change when she comes home...let us know! |
Well, the hubs tried to upload pics of the four babies we have, but he couldnt find it in the computer, lol. Then he tried to upload a pic of Princess by herself and it said the file was too big. He gave up. I am gonna have to learn this myself, could take awhile, I am really about as sharp as a dull pencil most days :p Anyway, vet kept the puppies at the office cuz he wants them to nurse from mom as soon as she is able, and wants to see how she acts with them. He is also spaying her. No sense in going through this again. If all goes well, we will have six little furbutts running around! Have I mentioned I already have four dogs? :rollingey Uh, that makes ten. And I live in a ranch. A small one. hee hee. It just got a lot smaller. ;) |
Wow I hope and pray things turn out well..I was just reading the first few posts you wrote and the first thing that popped in my mind was, she sounds like she is in pain for some reason and then saw where the vet saw two more pups..that will prob. explain her bizzare behavior..I hope...please keep us informed about her progress... bless you! |
Whispering prayer for all of you ..Good luck...My gosh 6 babies...Wow that's a big litter....My 6 lb female had 6 on her first litter but one was lost within 24hrs. Thanks for the update..I think we all were waitng to hear how it came out... Sheila |
1 Attachment(s) ohhh, vet is on the phone now. he said one lived, one was deformed, we pick her up at six. So, five babies, one passed. we dont know what the fifth one is, the rest are all girls. |
puppy pic was too big. we will try when we come home from vet...:D |
sorry you lost one. maybe she will settle down now. I have had mamas have c-sectionss and still nurse their babies. Hopefully everything will work out for you. BTW, mama is beautiful and congratulations on five babies. |
haha, that is Princess'es get away from me, I just had four kids and I dont like you anymore look!! We are home now, Princess is nursing her babies, (maybe the drugs helped) ;) boy, what an experience! We did try the puppy milk, but they dont seem to want it as much as mommies milk anyway, so I will keep a close eye to make sure they all get some before she wakes up and turns back into Satan, lol. Their little mouths are so tiny, I hope we dont mess anything up. One pup was not formed, vet said he had never seen that before, but it does explain why she has been so sick this whole time. That is also why all the dark green algae colored crud was there in the birth, my shirt is covered in it, ewww. I asked someone who raises dogs about it this morning when I saw it, and he said it was normal. Cant wait to talk to him now! Guess its gonna be a long night again...:):aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork :aimeeyork:angelyork well, technically, muttlets, but they sure look like mommy to me |
ooooo, bless your heart...keep us updated. |
So how is mama and babies doing? She nursing okay now and what was the 5th baby, boy or another girl? |
Oh Im sorry to hear about your lost baby, but glad to hear mama and the other five are doing better. |

With mama being so out of it, I was worried that they wouldnt be able to pee on their own, but they all had little puddles down there, so their little kidneys are working, yea! I tried to wake Princess up with some yummy dog food (laced with pain meds) and she didnt even wiggle her nose. She's had a rough day, I'll cut her some slack. I could never be a "real" breeder, first off, I panic too much and hubby would kill me, and second, this is a LOT of work, and too much can go wrong. I am so glad we had her spayed, and I am paying for at least one of my pups to be spayed as well. As far as them being free...the cost just went up to $75 says hubby, to help cover cost of tail dock, shots, and c- section. But they are all friends, so that wont be an issue. If it is, I need new friends. |
You need to get her in a cage that has higher walls so she can't escape them. She should settle down once she knows she's stuck with the job. Just don't baby her, let her know you're the boss, and it's her job! Good luck! Tube feeding would be really hard with that many pups. Stand your ground, but don't let them starve. |
Congrats on the litter, I hope momma feels much better tomarrow. |
