Puppy Shots Hi all you yorkie lovers and breeders. I have been using Duramune Puppy Shot for years. I am getting ready to place another order I have 12 yorkie babies getting ready for their first shot and before I did I was wondering if anyone is using another brand they consider better and why.

I always give mine the Progard Puppy-DPv. I buy them from Revival. I have read that Fort Dodge vaccines (Duramune) have a very high number of adverse reactions when given. I have never had a puppy have a reaction to a Progard Puppy vaccination. I do not vaccinate my puppies until they are at least 10 weeks old. What age do you vaccinate yours?

Are all of these brands a multi-purpose shot? What do they vaccinate against? Do you do them SQ or I.M.? Just curious.

We give only distemper and parvo and we give it under the skin of the neck. Here is a link that explains the different vaccinations available and what is recommended and what is not by Dr. Dodd, one of the leading authorities on canine vaccinations. Vaccination Schedule Recommendations For Dogs

There are many types of vaccinations available. What I give is Progard Puppy-DPv which is just for distemper and parvo Progard 5 would be contain distemper, adenovirus type 2, parainfluenza and parvo modified live. Progard 6 would have the same as the progard 5 but with coronavirus protection added. Progard 7 would have all of the above plus leptospira bacterin added. I would never give a yorkie puppy a 6 in 1 or 7 in 1 shot but some vets do. Some areas lepto is a problem and if you let your dog outside then in some area it might be needed when the puppy is older and can handle it. You can't treat a tiny yorkie puppy the same as say a lab puppy. Bigger breed puppies are weaned at a much earlier age and most are kept outside so they need immunizations at a little younger age. I wish more people would educate themselves about vaccinations. No only do the vets over vaccinate but many breeders do too. Feed stores around here just carry 5 in 1 and 7 in 1 shots so many people just buy those without knowing the consequences of giving them to a tiny young puppy. I have to add that what is recommended from the article is distemper and parvo only then rabies at a later date. The bordella can be given separately later if you are going to board. The bordella only last for 6 months anyway and it can actually give your dog kennel cough. Last edited by bjh; 02-17-2009 at 01:25 PM.

Puppy Vaccines I have read about the puppy vaccines. When I bought my first two puppies the breeder had already been giving the puppies their shots. They were not given a 5-1 they were given as individuals to ensure there wasn't a reaction. They only needed one more shot when I got them. But when I took them to the vet for the first time the vet vaccinated them for everything...even what they already have had. Do you notice that Vets tend to do that as well. Vaccinate even though the breeder has done so. How hard is to get a vet to understand they were already vaccinated for many of the things that they revaccinate for because it is "routine".
