dew claw removal suggestions video maybe?
 

Anyone have a very close up video of dew claw removals? For the very first time today I actually stayed in at the vets while they did the dew claw removal and tails. I asked her why she did not do the clamp and twist method (I have tried this sucessfully w/ the tails) and she said she thought it caused more pain to them. Well...........after watching her take a pair of scissors, then dig at the tail some more to snip little remainder bits of skin, then burn the area, then glue it, and all the while hearing the puppies squealing almost had me ready to faint LOL! Seriously though after watching all that. ... I would much rather do it at home and avoid the trip. I was also very distressed as they brought another do in on oxygen.. The assistant holding my pup reaches over to pet him and then touches my puppy again. The second time she did it.. I said "Excuse me can my puppies catch anything from you touching that dog and then touching my puppies". She looks at me and says no of course not he is only getting his teeth pulled. Am I paranoid or what??? Overall the experience has made me NOT want to bring them in again unless absolutly necessary! (Like for their fla h/c with shots and such). I have tried to do the dews/tails myself (tails using the clamp and twist method). The tails were very sucessful, but the dew claws are the reason I went back to the vet this time around. They bled like crazy -eventually the quick stop plugged it up, but still. It was miserable. So maybe I can get it right if I watch a video. I did watch the vet do it, but would like something to reference each time BEFORE I do it. Like I said the tail method worked like a charm-There wasn't even any bleeding. I know many breeders do this themselves so I would really love some tips on how to do the dew claws myself. Thanks :)

Dewclaws are easy to remove. For years I was afraid to remove them but a friend told me to use nail clippers. My first try went okay with the nail clippers but the clippers did not remove the entire 'seed' of the dewclaw so some of the dewclaws grew back on some of the puppies. I then talked to someone else and they said to use small cuticle scissors so I tried them and they worked great. Just nip the dewclaw at the base with the point of the scissors and with a slight pull the whole dewclaw will come out. Most of the time the pups hardly make a sound. Now for the tails I use the scissor method and it is pretty painless. The pups might cry a little but not for long. I use clotisol from Revival and it makes all the difference in the world for stopping the bleeding. I would not be without it. I pour a little in the cap then when I cut a dewclaw or tail I just touch my finger in the Clotisol and apply immediately to the tail or dewclaw. Most of the time the puppies don't loose a single drop of blood.

I have never seen the clamp and twist method done but I have heard tales that the puppies cry when the clamp is put on. It is just so simple for me to just squeeze the tail with the fingers of one hand then cut the tail with the other hand. I have to admit that before I started using the Clotisol it was always stressful doing tails because the Kwik Stop does not work that good at stopping the bleeding. I guess we all have to do what we are most comfortable with.

Has anybody tried the rubber band method? I would get so upset hearing my puppies cry from having my vet do the tail docking I started to research about tail docking. I came upon this article and the method seemed very simple. On the next litter I tried it. I placed the rubber band right where the tail was to be docked by using needle nose pliers. No crying. I thought, ok, this is good. To my surprise within 6 to 8 days the tails fell off. I checked the stub end and the tail was healed up nicely. I put antibiotic ointment on the tail end and had no trouble what so ever. Their tails were perfect! I heard pro and con about this method after I tried it the first time. I'm sure many may have horror stories but my first try was successful with no pain.

I have heard the rubber band method is actually illegal in many states. Also here is a link to tail removal (this is not my link or pup). My pups didn't cry at all when I used this method of tail docking and there was no blood. I didn't even have to use the quickstop

Thanks I was wondering what would be better because the quick stop really didn't work well at all!!! I am going to order the clotisol asap to keep on hand. Also the small cuticle scissors is a great idea. I think mine were too big for the tinies.

Yes the clamp method worked well for me on the tails as well.

For the dew claws do you clip the whole claw off with the cuticle clippers, or only part of the way and pull the rest off? Not quite sure that I followed this whole procedure. Also, watched the video of the pup getting his tail docked and my female jumped into my lap and started staring and growling at the computer when the puppy started crying. She has settled down now. Poor girl.:eek:

I clip at the base of the dewclaw then pull it out. It usually all comes off in one motion. Sometime it takes an extra nip. When you get the whole thing it looks like a little round seed.

I always take the puppies in the bathroom and close the door. I will have the momma in a different room with the tv up loud so if the puppies cry she cannot hear them very well. After doing all th puppies I always wait awhile before putting them back with the momma. I also make sure they have clean bedding. Also watch the puppies close after putting them back with the mother because she will start licking their tails. One problem I had when I was using Kwik Stop powder is that the mom would lick it off and the tails would start bleeding again. Since I started using the Clotisol that has not happened.

I have just started doing the tails and dewclaws myself. Like you after taking them to the vet and seeing what they put them through, I said never again will I take them to the vet when I can do it quicker and a lot less pain for them.
For the dewclaws I used the cuticle scissors and just cut it off and apply the Clotisol.
Also, the first time I did the dewclaws I used Quick Stop. It seemed to take forever to get the bleeding to stop completely. I also tried the liquid Quick Stop with the same results.
So the next litter I used the Clotisol, HUGE difference!! Stopped the bleeding right away plus it dries super fast!!

There was a good video on youtube on removing dewclaws but I can't find it anymore so I am guessing it was removed.

I was wondering if their are local stores that carry the clotisol. Revivals shipping is as much as the clotisol itself:eek:

I have never seen it at any store. I usually just order it when I am ordering other items from Revival.
