Good to hear..and you know you can if you have too.. A friend has asked me to watch her dock for the first time...that is how I learned...and I am fussy about how I like them done! |
watch video then become a vet im not being rude, but this sounds awful to me, that anyone can just cut and twist things of a living animal, without proper training, everyone goes on about BREEDING and noone shud try it,if they dont know what they doin, i think this shud be a vet job jmo, so its ok to watch video , them start cutting parts of pups:confused: all im tryin to say is there shud be some type of day course for severe things like that, :animal-pa |
I do understand your post...but I grew up in the UK..many years ago. Breeders learn from other breeders how to care for animals. Farmers are no different..why allow a vet to use a knife to slice off tails, stitch it and then do the same to the claw...when a breeder has thought of a better, less painful, bloodless way to do it. I am sure it sounds awful..but it is a part of breeding. I have had young vets ask me to show them the clamp/twist method because they did not learn it in Med school... Have you ever listen to a screaming puppy having a vet who cuts/stitches scream...I knew there was a better way, then I remember how my father docked Boxer tails with a clamp...by then I lived here in the US and asked other breeders to show me how... I do not advocate any person taking on this without watching the video or having another breeders talk then through it... My husband grew up on a farm...you would shutter at what the farmer has to learn to care for his/her animals...just a fact of life. |
[QUOTE=YorkieRose;3405620]I do understand your post...but I grew up in the UK..many years ago. Breeders learn from other breeders how to care for animals. I can not think of anything surgical a breeder should do on their own except tails and claws...and Yes, it is best to have a breeder or accepting vet teach it...but clamp a tail is such a simple, almost errorless procedure, one can really learn from a video... I am 100% against breeder ear cropping which is common in this country. Infact I am not in favor of ear cropping...I realize certain breeds lose their "type" uncropped" but it is done much later then tails and there is a lot of pain and healing time involved. |
I was wondering is the tail and ear docking done because that is what we have come to think a terrier should look like or is it for health reasons. I was also wondering was there an evolutionary reason for dogs to have dew claws? I think my Buster still has his dew claws. Is it like a flesh thorn about where his wrist would be? Is it ok for him to still have dew claws or will it cause him problems. His is my first dog and I am trying to educate myself. |
I am not sure why they crop the ears of many breeds? I can not think of anyreason except cosmetic..but perhaps larege breed owners know. I am happy they do not do it to Yorkies..I think I would learn to love a flop in in that case.. As to tails and declaws...that is done so young and only causes momentary discomfort. I am just not fond of a tail on a Yorkie and that is purely cosmetic..although they are cleaner and easier to keep clean with a tail covering the back end.JMO..and as to declaws, they can and do get caught in stuff...can be ripped out...but that is no reason to remove them on an adult... don't forget to clip the nail...as a former groomer I have seen them grow into the skin because the owner did not realize they even had them... |
6 mos. Removal? Quote:
Thank you for any help. |
That would not be a problem for me having it done while already under for another reason...I just wouldn't put them under for a claw... |
i have a ? about dew claws.. when i got my pup her dew claws were removed.. now she is a few months old on one of her feet her dew claw has a white thing sticking out and its swollen and idea what it is we are taking her to vet tomorrow. |
Might be a a piece of bone...good for the vet to check it out. |

thanks for the reply we have taken her to vet it was something white but not bone almost like a zit so he said he could remove it for good or i could squeeze it everytime it comes back we plan to have it removed just not yet cause what if it never comes back we would have put her through that for no reason. |
I prefer to have my vet remove the dew claws and tail. It's really inexpensive and I use that appointment to have the babies and mom examined. |
hers were removed before i got her.. just a minor set back with her she will be ok.. thank goodness she is my world.. |
I recall a Yorkie I used to groom who had a large white head on one side of her tail...I used to squeeze it out every time I groomed her. Never caused a problem. |
