| A few questions....Help needed.....Yorkie gave birth a week ago. Hi guys...I have a few questions! 1. My yorkie had puppies a week ago yesterday and she doesn't eat/drink a whole lot, It feels like she is pretty boney, I actually have to sit with her and make sure she is eating and drinking plenty of water, is there anything I can give her to make sure she gets everything she needs to get back to normal? I went to a local pet store and bought some puppy dog food and I am feeding that to her ( I heard you were suppose to give them puppy dog food before and after they give birth) and I also asked if I should get this product called nutri-cal (which I also heard was good to give them) but they told me if I am feeding her the puppy food then I didn't need the nutri-cal. 2. Is it pretty normal for the mom to leave her babies when they are sleeping? she checks on them every now and then or when she hears the babies making noises. Is it that she wants time alone? 3. When do the pups open their eyes and ears? 4. When do I start feeding the pups regular dog food? When do they stop sucking the boobie? This is my first litter, if you guys have any more suggestions please give them to me....Thank You |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | I had to hand feed mine for almost 2 weeks. One would not even drink unless i put it in my hand. You just have to keep trying. Have you tried whelping pudding? Boiled chicken, yogurt, ice cream anything you think she might like. I even had to hand feed the ice cream. As long as they are sleeping it should be fine. Mine open thier eyes anywhere from 10 days to 16 days..she was a late one. I start mine of mushy ground food at about 4 weeks. It depends on the mom. I have seen some that would nurse forever. My last girl kicked hers off around 7 weeks. The little one had sharp teeth and was hurting her. Some stop earlier just depends on mom.

1. Mine love boiled rice w/chicken and also vanilla ice cream. You can also mix canned dog food in her dry food. Or you can try a teaspoon of regular cottage cheese mixed in her dry food. You can add a little karo syrup to her water to sweeten it up a bit. 2. Yes, it is very normal for the mommy to leave her babies, (she needs a break just like we do) when they are sleeping or after she has fed them. 3. About 2 weeks 4. I feed my puppies regular puppy food mixed with a little water around 4-5 weeks. You really want the puppies to be weaned from mommy around 5 weeks old, any later than that will not be good for the mommy. You'll have to keep mommy away from puppies when weaning. Good Luck with the new puppies | |

2. Pebbles needed a break so as a new mommy I'd let her escape for a while. She'd stay downstairs and say hi to her pals for a while then run back upstairs to be with her babies for the first 2 weeks. 3. Eyes opened slowly around 10-14days. Pics on my website and info... 4. My baby is 5 weeks old and she has already started eating on her own mashed food and drinking water. She still nurses also. Good luck and congrats on your babies they are all very precious.
