Any tips or advice on csection My girl is 53 days. She had an xray and only has 1 huge pup. They are thinking about taking it on day 59. Is that to early? Our problem if I don't do it that day if she goes on 60,61 it will have to be an emergency csection. Any tips on a singleton and csections would be great. Thanks Melissa |
I'm not a breeder, but, my old vet said 62 days is norm, and anywhere from 5 days before to 5 days after. My friends dog just had a pup a week early, she's 3 weeks now and is doing fine. Thought maybe the mother wasn't going to make it, so she had to tube and bottle feed the baby because of the mother being so bad off. So, the vet knows what he's talking about, and I would feel comfortable with the 3 days before delivery. Better safe than sorry. |
The earliest is day 58, I believe, so she should be fine. |
The problem is you really don't know when she conceived. She could have conceived days after she was bred. I would not take the puppy that early because you risk the chance the puppy will not be developed enough. I know of a lady that let her vet do a planned c-section and all the puppies died because they were too premature. How big is your female? Even if the puppy appears big it is still possible she could deliver it. I know one lady that was told her female was going to have a big puppies and the vet did a planned c-section and the puppies were small. Over the years I have had a number of singleton pups and only one required a c-section and she was a 5 lb female. I pray all goes well with your momma. Please keep us posted |
If I go from the last tie she will only be 56 days. I am afriad it will not be developed. |

My vet waits until they start labor....I've never had one of my girls have a c-section.... but during my Jasmine's first pregnancy they weren't sure if she could deliver... the pup's heads were about the same size as her "area". They were on standby when she went into labor. She had no problems delivering on her own. |
This is her first litter. She weighs 5 pounds right now. He told me their was no way the head could pass. Either we could do a planned csection or wait to have an emergency. I don't want to lose the my girl. |
I was worried about one of my girls that had pups recently. I talked to my vet and they did an xray and said she may have to have one, but he would NOT do a scheduled c-section for that very reason (they could be underdeveloped). He said the best thing to do is to wait until they go into labor on their own, and if they can't deliver the pups then they would do a section at that point. I don't think vets like to schedule them for fear that they will do it on the wrong day, etc. and why put the mom through that if she can indeed have them on her own? It's hard to tell on an xray if they will need one or not...sometimes a puppy's head can look bigger than it really is due to lighting, etc. At least that's what my vet says. I would honestly wait if it were me. My girl ended up having hers on her own without a section, even though I did have to pull on the shoulders of a couple to get them out. However, to me, that was much better than putting her through surgery for no reason. :p |
From what I have learned is that its best to let the labor start before doing a c section. It is possible she could still pass the pup. The xrays are hard to determine sometimes. Is your vet on call 24/7? Is there a way to make sure he is available? I've had a singleton baby and all it took was an oxi shot, but she was a smaller female too, and I retired her. I would worry of not knowing her exact ovulation date and taking the baby too early. Did you see the xray? Was the pup very large to the eye? |

He is on call but I am scared I won't get there in time. I am afraid of the pup getting stuck and losing them both. I want to wait but if I do what if I wait and lose them both. I am really torn here. I am praying that when I take her in on Thursday she will be starting in labor. |
Once labor starts you will have plenty of time. Even during a normal delivery they momma will have contractions for hours before the hard contractions start. The hard contractions usually last an hour or sometime a little longer depending on the size of the pup. Is it possible there are two puppies and it just appears like one on the x-ray? By next Thursday if the puppy has not dropped then I would definitely not have the c-section done. Usually the pup will drop a few days before delivery. Also, when the puppy gets close to full term their movement will be good and strong so if by next week you are not feeling really strong movement of the puppy I would wait. I do pray all goes well. |

my vet would NEVER pre-sschedule a section. |
Thank you all for the advice. He wants me to bring her in on Thursday to look at her again then decide. They put me on the books but it is not difante yet. Maybe the xray was wrong and it is not as bad as what he thinks. The two techs. in the office breed yorkies and have for 20 years so I trust them. one of them was not suppose to work on Thursday but she was coming in also. |
Is is safe to have another xray done? I didn't ask if they were going to do another. If it is safe I would like to get another look before we decide. |
Like someone else stated, often the x-rays are deceiving as for the size of the puppy. If you are dead set on having a c-section then I would at least wait to her 61st or 62nd day. Personally I would not do another x-ray nor would I have a c-section done on her. I pray everything works out for you. |
I am not dead set on anything. I just want what is best for her. The way the puppy looked it was as big as her. If he tells me a csection is what I need to do then I trust him. If he says thursday to let he go natural. Thats what I will do. I am just concerned about the development of the pup that early. I may just be jumping the gun.. |
59days is not to early! but I would let her go into labor. how far are you from the vet? I personaly like my bitches to go at less 60! My daughter has gotten 7 oz pups out. Have you birth pups before? If not might be wise and go with your vetadvice. Hope she does ok. |
My vet is having us do a scheduled csection because of the holidays. He will come in even if the office is closed (Christmas Eve or Christmas) only if I scheduled - other than that I would have had to the ER vet and I do NOT like them at all. They are doing it on day 61 of the first breeding. I only bred her twice because I knew what we had to plan as I am in close contact with my vet. If I had bred on more dates they still would have done it on day 61 of the last breeding OR when she went into labor. They wouldn't want to harm the babies just because they jumped the gun and did it too early. |

I have helped with bigger dogs but only one yorkie and she had them in 30 minutes no problem. So I don't have much experince. The way the xray looked I wouldn't be surprised if this pup don't go that big also. I am 15 minutes from the office but it would take my vet 45 minutes to get there if he is at his farm. If she would start going fast I would have to call another office that hadles emergencies. |
Lexie had a scheduled c-section and did great with Chunky & Jasmine, after the xrays the vet thought they were too big for her to have them, they both weighed 3 oz and no problems with either one. After having them we both thought we might had jump the gun alittle because of their weight, so thats why I went ahead and tried again with her, but she couldn't pass the one puppy again, we waiting on her labor to see if she could but it was a nightmare, lucky I got her there in time, the placenta had detached but they got her out and she was fine. So having doing it both ways, I would schedule it, thats just my opinion having going through both ways, too many things could go wrong if the baby is too big to wait. Hope this helps you some.:) |
Thanks Kim that helps alot. |
I have a 5 lb bitch whose 1st litter consisted of one puppy whom the vet said was HUGE on day 62. He showed me the x-ray and the pup seemed to take up her whole abdomen, stretching from pelvis to up under the ribs. I have to admit...the pup looked scary big. We scheduled her c-section for the next day. Everything went fine. However, the little female puppy only weighed 3.2 ounces. She was no where as big as they thought she was. This girl's next litter consisted of another singleton pup who looked just as big as the last puppy. But this time we decided to let her attempt to whelp this puppy on her own. She whelped this puppy with no problems at all. The puppy was another female who weighed 4.5 ounces. So...most likely...she would have had the 1st singleton pup if we would have let her try. After this experience...I plan to alway's let my girls try to whelp naturally before rushing to a section. |
Thanks everyone. I am hoping she will start into labor on Thursday. I am going to make sure the pup has dropped |
Melissa, I don't have any real words of wisdom for you because I haven't had any first hand experience with singletons. I do know, however, if my vet recommended a scheduled "c" section for the safety of my bitch, I would very seriously consider it. I am very fortunate because I have complete confidence in all the vets that work in practice I use and they are available to me 24/7 365. However, it is a 20 minute trip and if you run into a crisis situation, 20 minutes is too long. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers this week. Good Luck! I can't wait to meet this little one. |

If I put my hand on her tummy I feel the little guy kicking all around but I can't see it just looking at her. My first concern is for my female. I don't want to lose her. |
Just checking to see if your female had a c-section today or if it has been postponed? I pray everything is well. |
I am hoping things go well too..I hope that he didn't section her today..my thoughts are day 58 or 59 is too early..I would wait until at least 60 or 61.... has he measured the width of the pup verses the pelvic outlet in the bitch??? Yes, the pup can look huge in an x-ray of a small bitch, but her pelvis may be able to support the outlet..The risks of doing a scheduled section that early in gestation are much greater of losing one or both than closely monitoring her labor progress and then having to bail at last minute.. 15 minutes isn't that long if he is at his farm to get to the office???? Do you have a mentor or someone you could call and check in with of your bitches progress is does go into labor??? Praying for the best outcome for you!!! By the way, your babies are so so adorable on your website!!!!! |
