6 1/2 male 4 1/2 female Question - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Hello, I have a 6 1/2 pound male and a 4 1/2 pound female. Is it safe to breed them? I am not a backyard breeder, however my little Ginger is 3 years old and the male is almost 2, I just want to raise one litter out of these guys and wondering is it safe? She has had one litter before I bought her and they told me she done fine. But her health is most important. Thanks.

I'm not a breeder, but, usually you want the female at least 5 lbs and the male should be smaller than the female

I would not breed that male with the female. He is to big for her.

My male is also 6.5 lb and female is 4.7 lb, they got tied twice, not by my doing...pretty sure female is preg. what will happen, will she have to have a c-section or do I just wait and see if she can have them on her own? I'm scared to death, praying she is not preg.

I would not breed them...for several reasons regarding their size and more.

Please, in no way should they be bred.

Please do not compromise the health and well being of her just to raise a litter.

The male is entirely too big for her and she is too small herself; a female should not be bred under 5 lbs. You, yourself said that her health is most important.

You should probably be nervous. Get her to the vet and see if she is pregnant. See my post to ASH424. If she is pregnant, she will more than likely need to have a c-section. If she happens to be not pregnant and you do not want her to get pregnant; then you should have her spayed when you take her to the vet.

You could also have her spayed now, then you won't have any worries about c-sections or any future issues with this. That's what I did when my 4.5 lber. had me worried about a possible preg. She's doing just fine these days

I would seriously question why that person would sell a small female that she said had no trouble delivering. Seems to me she would have kept her to bred again. I would have them spayed and neutered and not take any chances with her life. She's too small to be having babies and he is too large to be a stud for any Yorkie under 7 pounds. Please, do the right thing and not put your little girl thru such a bad time. Let her be safe and happy for once.

Although your little lady is to small to have babies I would like to clear up a little about your male being 6 and 1/2 pounds.....is he over weight? is he heavied boned?..are his genetics from larger adults and grandparents? there are alot of questions here....because even thou he is 6 and 1/2 pounds does NOT mean he will have large puppies, I have seen 7 pound males throw SMALL puppies and 3 pound males throw LARGE puppies.....it is the genetics of the parents of you female and male and grandparents that you need to check out....just thought this might help!

He is not overweight and is small boned. Not sure the size of the parents, but I do have another mommy that is 5 lb and the daddy is 3.5 lb and two of their babies are now 7 lbs. So I have witnessed that first hand about larger parents throwing smaller babies and visa versa. Just praying that if she is pregnant, the babies will be small and she won't require a c-section. As far as the 6.5 lb boy, he is getting neutered next week so I won't have to worry about him anymore. Don't really want to get the girl spayed now, will wait, until after she has the puppies...that is if she is pregnant. Just hope I'm doing the right thing. Thanks!!
