how does everyone keep the pups clean? I was just wondering where everyone keeps their pups while they have them? and also, how do u keep that area clean? i'm finding that I have to change the pads I have down about 10 times a day because the pups potty so much. Of course I have 6 and i'm sure most litter have a lot less but what method does everyone use? I normally just cover the hall that they live in, in wee wee pads and then change them twice between every meal... they also tip their water bowl over as soon as we put it down so we are constantly adding more water...

Have you thought about using a double cat bowl...the plastic cheap ones? They are about a buck at Wal-Mart and they won't tip over. Get 2 or 3 for water and then they have plenty and they can't tip them. The cat bowls are short so they don't have a problem getting in the food.

I actually use a cat bowl... one of them likes to turn it over and sit on top. it's very cute but it's a habit I'm trying not to get him started on.

My puppies always stay very clean. What are you feeding yours? I wean mine on ground up Chicken Soup puppy food. I just put down a double sided bowl of the dry ground up food and a double sided bowl of water. My pups always have nice firm stools so they are easy to clean up after. They usually just go a couple times a day.

From what I remember Iams has a lot of corn and grain in it and that will make them poop a lot more. How old are your puppies?

the puppies are almost 8 weeks old now... my dog wasn't producing enough milk so the vet told us to start them on the hard food at 6 weeks.

I start introducing my puppies to the ground up dry food at 4 weeks old. They still nurse on the momma but it helps to start taking some of the burden off of her.

opps I'm sorry I meant 4 weeks as well. The Doctor told us by 6 weeks we could stop watering it down so much but we still water it a little bit because some of the puppies still don't have some of their teeth yet.

If you grind it up like corn meal then you don't have to water it down. They can just lick it up. It is a lot less messy and it won't spoil. You might try leaving a bowl of the dry ground up food down also.

Be sure to get a wide bottom bowl and they won't tip it over.

| I think most of us don't have 6 pups around at the same time. I had three litters a few months ago... total 11 pups... thought I was going to go insane!! The more pups the more mess! My Pebbles had three pups a few days ago... and even though I have to feed the smallest one all day long... I feel way better (even without sleep) than I did when I had 11 pups. Gotta love 'em!!

Mine tear up those piddle pads . I use a excercise pen with newspapers on one side and their bed and food on the other. I feed sensible choice puppy have lots of poop too. I don't like the house to stink so I'm always changing the papers. At weaning time I feed the royal canin small breed puppy and leave that down 24/7. It's super tiny bites and then I also feed wet food too. If you have to big of bites ,you can use a blender, and hit the crush button a few times and then pick out the big kibbles. Everytime I change papers it seems another will poop again. . It's constant paper changing. I have friends save their paper for me. I don't like Iams, but since you have solid stool I guess I wouldn't change. You wouldn't want to have 6 pups with a loose stool, YUCK!

Yorkie Yakker | For my pups I keep them in a pen and tape a large plastic bag to a tile floor and cover it with newspapers, that way the pee doesn't penetrate to the floor. I have to change the papers alot, and I set out a couple towels for them to sleep on because they are easier to wash than dog beds and the puppies like to dig and nest in the towels, since the towels can bunch up. i tried pee pads but the pups love to tear them up. as for food, i feed them royal canin small breed puppy, add a little water and microwave for twenty seconds to soften it, then add some wet food. I bathe the pups every other day or so with baby shampoo as they often track through their potty, or sometimes use baby wipes if they get some poo on them. |
