Atten: BREEDERS, refund on a deposit for a puppy Hi, everyone I have a question >>>>>>if you put a deposit on a dog (this is not a Yorkie) and something happened (job wise) where you are not able to purchase the puppy anymore, what is reasonable for the seller and buyer? I put a deposit of $300 on a $1000 dog and would like a partial refund (she never said the deposit was "non" refundable). Is this too much to ask? She said she will give me 1/2 back (which is fine) once she sells the dog, but the problem is that dog was for sale for weeks before I sent a deposit and she only had the deposit (held the dog for me) for 4 days. I want her to give the deposit back right away not after she sells the dog. Is that too much to ask? Thanks to all that reply, |
It has been my experience that the refund on a pup is almost always non-refundable. Did you sign any sort of contract that specifically states the amount of the deposit and what would happen if you didn't end up getting the puppy? If she is willing to give you 1/2 back when she sells the puppy I think that is fair. Just keep in close contact with her and inquire about the puppy often to know if he has found a new home. Sorry I don't have better knowledge, maybe a breeder on YT would be more helpful in this situation. Good luck. |
It is my opinion that if there is nothing in the contract that says non-refundable, you should be entitled to all your money back. |

I would think that would depend on what the initial agreement between you and the breeder was. (This is why it's a good reason to put the terms agreed to on paper, and have a signed record of what the agreement regardign the deposit is.) Generally speaking, I would think of a deposit as non-refundable...if you can change your mind about it at any given time, then what's the use of putting anything down? But again, I think it will depend on what the breeder decides. |
Refund Sorry to rain on your parade...but when a deposit is placed on a dog the breeder stops advetising and places the pup on hold. It is a good faith payment that you are indeed going to purchase the pup. Almost always the deposit is non-refundable! Once the breeder has received a deposit they will tell anyone inquiring about said pup that the pup is sold. That means they will be loosing a potenial sale....therefore....if you do not follow through with the purchase the deposit is non-fundable! I know that there are breeders that will refund deposits after the sale of the pup...Waiting until the pup sells is the best way. After all they held the pup for you.... To some degree I do believe that the circumstance should be evaluated accordingly. After all there is a lot of work that goes into selling a pup. At least there is when I am buying a pup....I ask a ton of questions and want alot of pics. I put alot of thought into a pup before I place a deposit. Knowing that the deposit is probably NON-refundable..... Sorry, I hope I didn't ramble too much!!! |
deposit I have always, 100% for any reason, good or bad returned the deposit..why force someone to take your puppy or lose their money.....Yorkies are extremely popular and not hard to place..if the breeder had an ad in the newspaper and wanted to deduct the cost for a new ad, I see that fair, otherwise what expenses would rack up?? The pup needs shots, vet care, food etc, as long as it is in the breeders hands anyway... Some years ago a breeder/friend took a $500 deposit on a bitch we co-owned...she refused to return it when the buyers husband had a stroke. I returned the money myself, told the buyer I would deal with the co-owner..and it bought me such good will..my grooming/boarding business went through the roof...and so did the requests for my puppies. You can not buy a good reputation...well, I guess that is not true..it cost me $500..LOL The breeder/friend and I parted ways..I asked her to simply treat this woman the way she would want to be in the situation..she refused to return a dollar. |

Hi everyone! Thank you so much for ALL your responses I really appreciate them :) The reason we are not getting the dog is because my husband did not get a job he was suppose to get there for limiting our funds. There was no written contract, but everything that was said was done through email so everything said is noted. It was an ad on puppyfind and I paid her the deposit through paypal. I have another question how would paypal handle this if I were to open up a dispute case??? She had the puppy on puppyfind for weeks and could not place it, and she only held it for me for only 3 days, I really don't see where she could of lost a sale on the puppy in that short of time especially since the puppy was on puppyfind for about 3 weeks prior. |

Well, regardless of what was or wasn't in writing I believe that if the breeder really cared about this puppy they would refund your deposit. I mean...if your husband didn't get a job will you still be able to care for the pup like it needs to be? I think that should be taken into consideration...after all...it 'is' about the puppy and not the money...right? |
