![]() My brother's Yorkie just had puppies 3 boys and 1 girl early this morning, the problem is that the yorkie is not really nursing her babies, I also think they held the puppies in order to transport them to her where she can nurse her puppies. Also he told me that when the puppies were born they were not nursing right away because they feared that she probably would kick them or killl them when the next pupie was born. I was wondering what do they need to do in order for her to nurse her puppies

![]() How old is the female?I NEVER breed one before they are 24 months old! Some are not ready to be a mother! Might have to bottle feed them!Keep trying to get her to feed them and if your lucky something might kick in and she well take care of them! Good luck lily

![]() Encourage the dam to lay down and place the pups on the nipples. Squeeze some milk out and let it touch the pups lips..you may need to gently open the mouth and squirt some in and show them how to latch oin to the nipple. If the mom will not lay still you may have to hold her down until she realizes she must lay still...just pet her head and talk gently to her. Make sure she is cleaning their rears so they can pee and poop. If they are crying, make sure they are warm and hand feed them, never feed a cold pup, you will kill it...good luck

All this advice is good. It happens every time one of my moms has a c-section. They are sore and not real into nursing..I have to cut the nails immediately. It will take no more than 24hours.. | |

Mom not interested in newborn pups Sometimes placing honey or nutrical on the stomach and anal areas of the pups will encourage the mom to lick and stimulate the pups and be more interested in feeding. Thanks, njgiger

problem feeding You can buy powdered puppy formula from Walmart in the dog section or from your vet, then mix it according to directions. I also keep a heat lamp ( a regular lamp with a 75-100 watt bulb) above the pups on one end of the puppy box to keep pups warm. By using a lamp or a heating pad (under the box and on low setting) at only one end of the box, if the mom or pups get to warm, they can always move to the cool end of the box. I have fed small pups (who are unable to suck adequately or unable to compete against larger siblings) every 2 hours for 2-3 days until the mom will feed them. I continue daily to try the pup at the nipple and usually the pup will go ahead and start sucking. njgiger
