When this pup tries to stand up or use it's legs does it just splay out?...If so you can tape the hind legs to hold them closer together...If will help keep the legs in a more natural position so he can use them and strengthen his leg muscles...You can use thin adhesive tape wrapped around the ankles and a piece between the ankles that holds the legs in position...Remember to not put the tape on too tightly and to change them daily and check them frequently... |
Don't put her Down!!! I know so many people who are willing to work with special need dogs. I know of a puppy recently (chi) that was born without her front legs here in Idaho. People clamored to help her, and love her. There are people that would love her despite the disability. Not to mention if she can over come this, she could be wonderful for special needs people. Yes, it is not the same type of life that other dogs have, but it in no ways makes it a bad one. I bet in fact she will be more doted on and loved than some of our healthy pups, because she will instantly tug at our heart strings. If you need to find her a different home, I would take her in a heart beat. But please unless she is really sick, do not put her to sleep! |
We have a girl that seems very similar to what you describe. Turns out she was born with twisted femurs. I listened to my vet and waited til she was 6 weeks to do x-rays. By then it was too late to use the taping method as the bones had hardened. We kept her and today she has a very good life. She doesn't walk correctly but gets around very well. She is actually one of my most delightful Yorkies!! Your pup is younger so you have a window of opportunity to try taping to correct her condition. Don't give up on her. You, or a vet, could try feeling her legs to see if the problem is skeletal or muscular but, in either case, I would give him a chance. I definately agree. Don't rush into putting her down. Do the taping method and also the therapy, give her a chance at life! |
Update-- Got second opinion. I took the little pup to another vet today. He looked at her little leg and said that her little knee was locked for some reason. He told me to do a bit of physical therapy on it 3 times a day. Just bend it back and forth, back and forth and it should get better. Last night she started walking on 3 legs. Just the right leg is all that she wasn't using correctly. So, maybe this is all it will take to get her better. Thank you for all the kind words, prayers and thoughts. Keep it up. And don't worry I'm not going to put her to sleep no matter the outcome. |
leg That is a good update...she may have an inverted knee cap..totally fixable if so.. She may only need you to exercise it daily...time will tell. Best Wishes |

Glad things are looking up. It's amazing at how resilient animals can be. Gracie broke her leg badly at 4 months and I couldn't believe how fast she could run on three legs with her casted leg straight out behind her. And then there's Sandra Bullock's dog who has no front legs and hops around the house on it's hind legs. No wonder we love them so much...and they never complain! |
Sorry about your little puppy. But sounds like you want to think about it before just taking the easy way out and giving up. I seen something on Animal Planet where they did a therapy where the dog couldn't walk and yet they put it in some warm water and the dog could move its legs like walking. You know sometimes its easier for us to do therapy in water. Give the taping some time and then maybe try that later if you decide to keep the puppy. I hope you do get a 2nd opinion. Not sure the first vet wants to try anything else. |
