Oh no, that's really sad. :( I hope she pulls thru for you.

Sugar's Mom 05-25-2008 02:05 PM

Anne, if you are using Esbilac, it is two parts water and one part powder. I would start out only giving one half cc every hour. Then according to how it's tummy feels increase to one cc every hour. I rather use a syringe than tube feed.

Dee I have never done this with a syringe.. I am afraid to get too much in the mouth..I have never done that..
any suggestions would be great..
I gave some liver drops.. and the vet said to do this every half hour at the start to get the warmth and a little in tummy ..anne

I was just talking to a breeder I know.. cannot call her all the time as she rescues, breeds and is always so busy..
I called her and she called me back.. I told her they were all doing well until the tail docking happened.. I believe since they were so stressed and in pain that they did not get enough.. she believes too...it was the tail docking that set them back...she also agreed that it was not as stressful when they were one day old when they use to do it.. I have really noticed a huge difference in waiting this 4 days.. so much crying and pain...anne

kanda 05-25-2008 03:51 PM

This little girl is in good hands with you. I know that you will do whatever you can to help her. Please tell her I'm rooting for her. How's Kandie holding up?

I have so nervous about this myself. I have 7 little girls, they had their tails docked Friday, just 3 days after being whelped. I gave all the girls from the get go, a small amount of karo syrup. I had bought a nurser but had little success. the syringe size I used was a 1 cc syringe or one for insulin. it was perfect. I just put some in between their gums and their lips, after gently prying their mouth open then after they could taste it they would try to suck on the syringe. I very slowly and gently expressed the syrup or newborn formula into their mouths. as long as I could see they they were sucking or licking on the syringe I felt safe expressing more into their mouths.
I too noticed Friday after getting their tails docked and I had other things to do I paid less attention to them all. I did not supplement them at all. Saturday I have cheer practice and was alway from them. Saturday evening I noticed my smallest puppy was not as big as the others now and the difference was almost 1 full ounce. I started pulling away the bigger pups and letting her nurse on the teats closest to her tail and then I gave her the puppy formula through the nurser. If I did not see her tummy bulging alittle or no increase in weight with weighing her. I then fed her about 1/2 to 1 cc with the syringe slowly. She weighs 4.6 oz now and all the other puppies weigh 6.5-7.6 oz. now. I have the heating pad on and sometimes the little heater above the whelping box to increase the temperature around the box . Hopefully then they won't be utilizing their metabolism to stay warm and use it to get strong. What has worked for me is no consolation for you right now. I pray everyone is healthy and your little girl gets stronger.

Anne, I always dock mine at four days and have never had a problem except once when I had one's little paws get sore from the dew claws. It hurt him to push so he didn't each much for about one day.

thanks so much.. I have been alternating water/syrup one hour and the next I tube the formula.. so baby had enough strength to suckle for ten minutes.. and what I did was gave one cc of water/sryup after.. I know it should have been done before.. but hubby went down to the room ahead of me and baby was suckling when I got there.. so I told him next time we let the suckling happen after we tube.. then baby can top up with suckling.. this is every hour.. and tonight is going to tell me where we can go next.. anne

I am tube feeding a little boy that only gained .1 oz during the first 6 days when he was nursing off his mother. He is now 16 days old and is up to 11.3 oz from his birth weight of 4.1.

The vet said that tube feeding will prevent the puppy from aspirating the formula and is safer than a nurser or syringe. Vet told me to feed according to the directions on the can which say 30mL/day for each 4 oz that the puppy weighs and to divide that into 6 feedings so that you are feeding every 4 hours. Start out only feeding 2/3 of the amount called for for a couple of feedings, because the stomach may be shrunken from not getting enough food; then increase it to the full amount.

So a 4 oz puppy should be getting 5 mL of formula every 4 hours. Then every time the puppy goes up a full ounce I increased the amount I'm feeding by 1 1/4 mL. At this time he is getting 13 3/4 mL every 4 hours.

Thanks lori.. I will do what ever I can to save this baby.. vet would not put fluids in him.. I said why not.. you did for gracie and she was 2 oz and he said he did not want to..wanted it done the way I am doing it.. but crap him putting some extra fluid would have given me more space in that tummy for milk replacer....anne

Anne I'm so very sorry you lost your baby boy...Our Vet tail docked all of our babies (10 total) at 3 days old and we never had a problem with the 3 days, I've syringe fed 7 total. All made it fine...I wonder why the tail docking put so much stress on them. Let me know if you need me Hugs and Prayers :) Lee
