Help breeders... ??? about puppy My pups are almost five weeks old and we just started ground dry puppy food on a plate... and I am noticing a few teeth. This morning I noticed the smaller one was wet around the mouth. When I touched it, it was a little sticky. I opened her month and nothing was in there. They are confined in a baby pool so she didn't get to anything. Is this normal or do I need to take her too the vet? I noticed to her poop was a little mushy (not diareha sp?) but soft. I figured that would be to change in diet. They are still all nursing with mom. I have never experienced hypoglycima but I did give her a little bit of puppy nutrical... any suggestions or thoughts. Very nervous because she is the small one of the bunch... she weighs 13 oz this morning... which is a little gain from yesterday. She hasn't lost weight. Please any help would be greatly appreciated. I am calling the vet too... but I always get lots of ideas and advice from here. thank you!!! |
Help... anyone???? |
I just PM'd you I dont know. Is she shaking? weak? The poopie does get softer as they are being weaned for a while I know sometimes if dogs get excited they get kinda "foamy" around the mouth sometimes. I havent had it happen with Yorkies tho. I would call the vet just to be safe hun |
Ok... I just thought of something Did you hear any gagging while they were eating? A lot of times if they gag..or even vomit. It will be around little puppies mouths . And the bile can be sticky and kinda and foamy She may have just choked.... |

Thank you... Yes soft stools can quickly turn to diarrhea, And if they get vomiting and diarrhea you can lose them fast at this young of age. I was shocked when the puppy flu went thru a litter I had before. (tested Neg on coccidia and other things) I lost a 8 month old And another little puppy in a matter of hours. I really think I'd take them to the vets too. |

Well we are back from the vet... and he ruled out worms for sure. She had no temp and her vitals were all great. He gave her a bunch of fluids, some meds for vomiting and amoxicilian. How does the mom get coccidia? Lilly hasn't been anywhere in over six months and she is rarely outside except to pee. She has no exposure to other animals and she has all of her vaccinations obviously. Sophie (the puppy) had a solid stool when we came home. It was never watery... just on the softer side. The bloody discharge is what made me run to the vet as fast as I could. She is still very sleepy. The vet told me to take her off any kind of puppy food and just let her nurse from mom... but she doesn't seem interested. I thought I would let the meds kick in. Is there anything you guys suggest I do that I might not be doing? |

I didnt know that ! What did the vet say about that? Did he test for coccidia ? I dont know anything else you can do...Hopefully the meds kick in and shes better soon :( Prayers for your baby (((HUGS))) |
The blood is just discharging a little bit all by itself... not with the poop. She was laying on my lap and it made a spot on my pants. He didn't even mention coccidia. I didn't read most of these post until I came home. All he asked was if mom was treated for parasites. Lilly has never had any problems. |

Just watch her closely. She could have been having a hypoglycemic episode. Do you have any Nutri-drops or Pet-tinic on hand? If so you might give her some of that a couple times a day. Anytime a puppy act listless and is not eating then that is a sign of hypoglycemia. You could give her a little Karo syrup and water and see if that perks her up. Please keep us posted on how she is doing. |
Okay... they treat coccidia with antibotics and she is on an antibotic (amoxicilian). I was reading other post about coccidia and Sophie just has softer stool... not diarriea. The vet thinks it was due to change in diet. Could it be because she is the little one of the litter? So many questions = ( I just want to do everything in my power to make her all better!! |
