Amoxicillin does not get rid of coccidia !! You need Albon to sucessfully treat it. |
Sounds like your vet didn't make any firm diagnosis but is playing it safe with the amoxicillan and by advising to just let her nurse. At 5 weeks a healthy puppy should be ready for some puppy food along with continuing to nurse. I start mine out on kibble soaked in water until it's mush. You can water it down more if there's any stomach upset at first. I"m not saying go against your vet's advice, just stating how it is with most pups. If she won't nurse, you can try a little karo on the nipple to entice her. As far as coccidia goes, I've never seen a clear answer on how a dog contracts it but that stress or a change in food can bring it on. I give my pups a 'just in case' treatment of Albon for 5 days a couple of weeks after they start eating food and I always get a clear fecal result. I'm guessing that it can be present but dormant in the intestines and can be expressed by stress or a change in food. Bloody diarrhea is never a good thing, especially in a pup so it's good you went to the vet. In an older dog, it could just be an irritable bowel. I've never personally seen it in a pup so I would have been worried too. Hope it all works out. Keep an eye on her: make sure her gums are a healthy pink and that she doesn't become dehydrated. At 5 weeks, she isn't as frail as a newborn but can still go downhill quickly. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa |
If your vet ruled out worms, he should have been able to rule out coccidia as they are both detected by a fecal sample. |
Her gums are pink... and she hasn't had diarrhea just soft stool. |

Yes, I missed that too.:( I would be very concerned with a puppy this little. They go downhill fast sometimes. Mine was being subQ'd by me..anti nausea med..and diarrhea med. and 2 still died. Can you call the vet back? Make sure you have ER vet phone number tonight. Not trying to scare you hun. But I'm not sure your vet did what he should in this case. Keep us update...Praying.... |
The vet is a vet hospital and open 24 hours. We are currently waiting for a call back to ask more questions. At the advice of another YT member I started her on goats milk, karo syrup, and nutri-drops. She had a normal stool when we came home from the vet at 1pm and has peed twice. She nursed with mom a little but I could tell she was getting tired... that is when I have her the goats milk. It is hard when the vet is saying one thing and YT is saying another. I know that vets can't possibly know everything... and they have different opinions, I just don't want to miss anything. I don't want to regret not doing something. I am leaning toward hypoglycima (but she never seemed out of it... or loopy. In fact she would look me straight in the eye... just extremely sluggish. Maybe I caught it before it got to that point?). That just doesn't explain the browinsh blood stained discharge to me. But, the vet was pretty sure that was change of diet and maybe that led to the hypoglycimic episode. I will keep you updated... but we aren't letting her leave our sight! We are hoping all we are doing gets her well soon. |
How is she doing today? |
Yes...Wondering like Nicki how that little one is doing this morning? Let us know. Praying that all is well |
"It is hard when the vet is saying one thing and YT is saying another. I know that vets can't possibly know everything... and they have different opinions, I just don't want to miss anything. I don't want to regret not doing something." I had the same issue with my last litter. The vet said let nature take its course and don't supplement the puppies. He also said with a large litter be prepared to lose 2 or 3. Now I love this vet. He is really the best around here, but I certainly didn't feel right about what he was saying. So I went with YT recommendations on supplementing, and saved all 7 of them. You really have to take charge of your own puppy's care. Make the decisions based upon all the information and your own gut feelings. i think you will be happier that way, and will be able to live with the decision's outcome. Hoping you had a good night, and that things are more settled today. P.S. The reason he said don't supplement was he wanted the puppies to get the colostrum from mom. Reasonable, but it wasn't working for me... so I supplemented the puppies. |
Okay... after having her by herself I think we have found we were a little off. I think the mushy poop was from a different puppy all together. Last night and this morning Sophie looked like she was trying really hard to poop and couldn't. This morning a small amount came out but it was hard. My husband picked her up and looked at her bottom to see if any was stuck and he thinks the brownish blood is actually coming from right around the outside of her bottom. Is it possible for a puppy to produce a hemroid from pushing hard or to tear something???? We don't think the blood is enternal because the poop doesn't have a trace of it. She is eating... nursing with mom and getting goats milk from us to fatten her up since she is the smallest. No temp and no more vomit since yesterday morning. Is there something I can do to help her poop. Waiting for another call back from the vet to get his opinion as well. |

She can strain trying to pass a very firm elimination and cause swelling in the rectum, this of course will make the next movement difficult and so on. Ask your vet for instructions on giving her an enema. When I have to give an enema I use a 3ml syringe (no needle of course) three or four drops of hand soap in a juice glass of warm water ( body temp) depending on the weight of the puppy I will start with about 1ml and wait several minutes before possibly giving another 1ml. Pure mineral oil is a good intestinal lubricant in small doses. Add a little something to soothe her bottom and she'll be much more comfortable. Hope this helps. :) |
