At what age do you stop breeding?
 
I'm not breeder and sure don't want to be. But question I read here about someone breeding a 8 year old dog. isn't this too old? I'd think this would be like the twilight years and a female should be in retirement. Does a responable breeder truly justify to themselfves to breed a female of that age?

lol i know exactly what post you are referring to! i was wondering the same thing.. i am not a breeder or a professional, but my first thought was "Wow, thats too old to breed isn't it?" but i could be wrong... if so, it is really sad. :eek:

Most breeders retire their gals when they are 5 or 6 years old depending on the whelping history of the bitch. I feel that 8 years old is too old to continue to breed. There are often problems with defects and singletons as well as whelping complications. I wouldn't want to have a baby at 50 - 55 years of age and I've chosen to not put my dogs through that either.

i just retired two girls at five. They turned 5 in March.

I'm no breeder either...I'm just wondering. :)

What are you confused about? Can I help? I don't know that it's a moral decision but it should be made ethically with the dog's welfare in mind.

My oldest stud is not three yet so I'm sorry but I don't know. I would think it to be about the same age as the females or maybe a year older. That's what I plan anyway.

This breeder is claiming to be a responable but still breeds a female at that age. How can someone claim they're a good breeder and still breed at that age. Again ethics.

I have always heard that as long as studs aren't breeding a ridiculous amount a year, that they can keep going as long as they have the goods to do it haha. Could be wrong though, but I know 2 show breeders who each have a 12 year old stud. :)

i would like to think 5 to 6 year's for a girl depending on the whelping history
i agree with tammi i would not want to have a baby at 50 that is a scary thought:eek: as for a male i feel as long as they are not over bred and healthy and his count;s are good with no defect's showing that would be up to each breeder as to when they think there dog has had enough

Thanks, I've heard that too. My question is, do older studs produce more girls. You know, the swimmers get weaker with a males age and the girl swimmers are stronger in general so get there faster. If so, I'm waiting for my Jersey to age a little. Out of the 14 puppies he sired only 3 were girls. Hmmmm.;)

age doesnt have anything to do with the sex a stud produces...just like in humans, if females are more abuntant its related to the family tree on the males side.

Older studs are required by AKC for sperm checks at the age of 12 (I believe)
also I believe "Gator" was one of the most used stud (you will see him in most all pedigrees) didnt slow him down in repoducing.
