At what age do you stop breeding? I'm not breeder and sure don't want to be. But question I read here about someone breeding a 8 year old dog. isn't this too old? I'd think this would be like the twilight years and a female should be in retirement. Does a responable breeder truly justify to themselfves to breed a female of that age? |
lol i know exactly what post you are referring to! i was wondering the same thing.. i am not a breeder or a professional, but my first thought was "Wow, thats too old to breed isn't it?" but i could be wrong... if so, it is really sad. |
Most breeders retire their gals when they are 5 or 6 years old depending on the whelping history of the bitch. I feel that 8 years old is too old to continue to breed. There are often problems with defects and singletons as well as whelping complications. I wouldn't want to have a baby at 50 - 55 years of age and I've chosen to not put my dogs through that either. |
i just retired two girls at five. They turned 5 in March. |
Good info... at what age do you retire a stud? I'm no breeder either...I'm just wondering. :) |
Thanks All I'm more confused now. Well it's all about a post in general, I quess it's a moral question then. tyty |

Just questioning about a title of responable breeder Quote:

I have always heard that as long as studs aren't breeding a ridiculous amount a year, that they can keep going as long as they have the goods to do it haha. Could be wrong though, but I know 2 show breeders who each have a 12 year old stud. :) |

i would like to think 5 to 6 year's for a girl depending on the whelping history i agree with tammi i would not want to have a baby at 50 that is a scary thought:eek: as for a male i feel as long as they are not over bred and healthy and his count;s are good with no defect's showing that would be up to each breeder as to when they think there dog has had enough |
you know guys sheeeeeeeeesh they never think they are to old |

age doesnt have anything to do with the sex a stud produces...just like in humans, if females are more abuntant its related to the family tree on the males side. Older studs are required by AKC for sperm checks at the age of 12 (I believe) also I believe "Gator" was one of the most used stud (you will see him in most all pedigrees) didnt slow him down in repoducing. |
ages I wish AKC would cut the age to 7, instead of 10 for bitches...male age is not a problem in my eyes far as harming the stud...I think it is a problem breeding a male non-stop for years, instead of intermittenly for a long period of time. My Gator son and grandson bred until 8 and 10 with no problems...I have only kept one male at stud until 12 yrs...and his last litter was 4 girls and his first was 6 girls...but lots of males in between...LOL |

IMO, females should be retired at 6 yoa. |
I am going to be honest here. I have been raising for nearly 12 years. During those 12 years I did breed a 8 year old female one time and a 7 year old female 1 time. Both females had pups with no problem and they were wonderful mommas. It was selfishness on my part because I wanted to keep something out of them. My vet had said that 8 years was not to old (what do they know). I would never do it again. Some females might need to be retired earlier than others. You have to consider any health issues the female might have. I have one female I quit breeding at age four because she was over weight and I knew it would not be healthy to breed her. If you have a female that has had 2 c-sections then IMO they should not be bred again. If you have a female that is a neglectful mother then she should not be bred again. My opinion is that if a female is a good size and has no health issues I see no problems with breeding them at age 5 or age 6 tops. |
bitches I stop at 5 to 6 yrs also...I bred my best bitch for the last time at 7 3/4 yrs..6 puppies and all went well...only time I went past 6 as I recall... |
I'm retiring Ruby this year. She is 4 1/2 years and has had three litters. She's a great mom, a good whelper, but I can tell looking at her that it is time to retire her. When her puppies are gone she will be going to boarding school with my granddaughter. She is so much smaller than the other dogs there that the students all call her "kitty". She loves the freedom and setting. A nice retirement for her. |
