ages I wish AKC would cut the age to 7, instead of 10 for bitches...male age is not a problem in my eyes far as harming the stud...I think it is a problem breeding a male non-stop for years, instead of intermittenly for a long period of time. My Gator son and grandson bred until 8 and 10 with no problems...I have only kept one male at stud until 12 yrs...and his last litter was 4 girls and his first was 6 girls...but lots of males in between...LOL |

IMO, females should be retired at 6 yoa. |
I am going to be honest here. I have been raising for nearly 12 years. During those 12 years I did breed a 8 year old female one time and a 7 year old female 1 time. Both females had pups with no problem and they were wonderful mommas. It was selfishness on my part because I wanted to keep something out of them. My vet had said that 8 years was not to old (what do they know). I would never do it again. Some females might need to be retired earlier than others. You have to consider any health issues the female might have. I have one female I quit breeding at age four because she was over weight and I knew it would not be healthy to breed her. If you have a female that has had 2 c-sections then IMO they should not be bred again. If you have a female that is a neglectful mother then she should not be bred again. My opinion is that if a female is a good size and has no health issues I see no problems with breeding them at age 5 or age 6 tops. |
bitches I stop at 5 to 6 yrs also...I bred my best bitch for the last time at 7 3/4 yrs..6 puppies and all went well...only time I went past 6 as I recall... |
I'm retiring Ruby this year. She is 4 1/2 years and has had three litters. She's a great mom, a good whelper, but I can tell looking at her that it is time to retire her. When her puppies are gone she will be going to boarding school with my granddaughter. She is so much smaller than the other dogs there that the students all call her "kitty". She loves the freedom and setting. A nice retirement for her. |
