How early is too early to let them go? I know .... I'm full of questions today~! My dad is getting one of Nalas puppies. (he gets his cheaper....FREE..lol) Anyways,,,he wants his puppy ASAP He wants me to fly it down to NC. where he just moved in March from Ohio near my sister. Me and the puppy that is. He has his new home all set up and is ready for his new puppy NOW. I told him no way can this puppy come at 6 weeks. Hes 70 , so he doesn't understand why he cant get it at 6 weeks. His 18 year old Poodle died last year. And he got him at 6 weeks. Anyways....HELP....I never let mine go before 12 weeks. Being my Dad. What is the soonest I can safety take him his puppy? |
A six week old puppy is way to young plus you cannot fly them until eight weeks. Ten weeks is the very minimum I would ever let one go. I did let ONE go to a very experienced breeder at that age because of her work schedule but mine are 12 weeks old generally. |
You could always use one of my dad's favorite quotes....because I said so. ;) I'm not a breeder and will get shot for this....but depending on how well puppy was doing and how well your dad does with tending to the needs of a small dog (don't know how big his poodle was)...I would consider 10 weeks. Because of Ramsey's size and my owning yorkies previously I was allowed to get her at 10 weeks. I think it's sweet...your dad has baby fever. :) |
I like that line......because I said so! I remember that growing up as a child so many times! But in all honesty I would never let a puppy go before 12 weeks even to a family member! JMHO Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers |

I agree with you and Dee 10 weeks is the soonest...He just dont get it. While most puppies eyes open at 7-10 days. These little guys dont usually open till 2 - 3 weeks. He had a toy poodle at 6 weeks..and it was his biggest baby. He kept that poor sick thing alive for years when he was so sick. He is by himself. And I know he's lonely. But I just know 10 weeks is early. BUT try telling that to "dad" lol  |
I think it is a judgement call on your part. Sure we can all tell you what is the norm, but only you know your father. Only you know if he is capable of putting the extra time into a younger baby. In my opinion, I would check with the airline to find out the minimum age it has to be to fly, and then if you are comfortable letting it go to him before 12 weeks old, let it go! It's not like this is some stranger that you just met, this is your father..you've seen his home, you know how attentive he is to his pets. |
Your puppy must be a minimum of 8 weeks old according to airline requirements. you may beable to use that the the airlines won't let the pup fly until 10 week's of age |
I would not change the age the puppy left just because it was going to a family member. The puppy will still benefit greatly from being with littermates and being able to still play with mom daily. I would never let them go before 12 weeks, actually prefer to send them home at 14-16 weeks. |

Awww on the poodle. Years ago..our 80 plus year old neighbor had a dashaund..who was probably 80 himself. Oh, how Mrs. A fussed over Toby. Buy him a calendar...mark the date...puppy is coming. Send pictures in the mail as something to look foward to...and hope the time passes quickly. ;) |

Knocking on my door.....crate in hand... I was thinking. I had one out of Nalas last litter be a biggie boy. I named him "Frank the Tank" He was so much bigger then the others at 12 weeks he was a bit over 3 lbs. IF...I had one like this I may consider 10 weeks... Oh he is going to be soooo mad at me.:p |
Wait a second...you're coming to NC? Ok you can bring me one of Nala's puppies too then!! :D Or I'll trade you for one of my brats...::looking around:: let's see...who is the meanest one.... lol...just kidding of course, but you should come and see me and the gang! :D |
I'll let mine go at 10 weeks as long as they are eating on their own and I feel comfortable with the buyer. I think I let one go at 9 1/2 wks. But like I said, I have to know the pup is doing well on its own before I make a decission. Mine tend to nurse a long time so far. Especially with Meiah - she lets them nurse till they go home :) Quote:
