Default Sages' Heat Cycle, Still Need Help

As U all know I think Sage is in a split heat cycle below is what has been going on with her:

February 25, 2008: (Age: 10 Months, 3 Weeks & 1 Day Old) 1st heat cycle, 1 really big spot of blood/pee in our hall way on our beige carpet, flagged some and that was about it, few spots here and there for the 1st week none after and I thought it was just her keeping herself so clean was the reason I couldn't find any blood spots when I wiped her with tissue. Kept her 100% away from Boys, NO Breeding, NO chances of it. She's never been bred at all.

March 25, 2008: (Age:11 Months, 3 Weeks & 1 Day Old) 2nd heat cycle, woke up to red blood spots on our Tile floor this morning and she has not stopped spotting red since then. It is kinda more water type but still red and I can check her and it comes off on tissue, no yellow or infection at all that I can tell, she has no fever what so ever, not drinking or eating any more or less, playful as can be, not sleeping anymore then she usually does. Not a thing different in her except she is spotting and she is swollen there. No Breeding, No Boys around her what so ever.

March 31, 2008 called the Dr. Kim (Vet) she said it sounds like a split heat cycle to her they can bleed from 2 to 4 weeks after starting their heat cycles. If in concerned bring her in to the Bedford Office (She use to be in the Brownstown office which is closer to us)

April 11, 2008:
Okay I called the Vet again today since she's on Day 18 of her spotting and of course Dr. Kim nor Dr. Clint (Hubby and wife team) wasn't there, a Dr. Donahue is there she's been there for a year now, (Funny we've been there for like 5 years and never ever saw or heard of her!!) I ask nurse if I should bring Sage in to try to find out why she maybe spotting still, what test should be done to find this out (Never had anything like this happen to any of our Yorkies and never went through a Split Heat Cycle before with any of our Yorkies)

Dr. Donahue said that some Yorkies are like this and Yorkies usually have trouble with heat cycles (Never heard that before from any of our other Vets) and they can bleed sometimes up to a month in their heat cycles. Said not to worry about it and to bring her in if she is still bleeding after April 25th, I said are U sure, I mean this will be a solid Month of her spotting she said yes this is what she says. I said okay can U tell me or give me some idea what could be happening to her if she isn't going through a Split Heat Cycle, well all Dr. Donahue said was it could be a "Ovarian cyst", I then ask well is there signs I should be looking for? She said well they wouldn't know if it was Ovarian Cyst unless they do surgery. (I then questioned where Dr. Donahue came from well she's been out of Vet School for a year now, this concerns me too, I told them I was VERY PICKY which Dr.s seen our Yorkies, she said well U can take them to Bedford, Scottsburg and Seymour) I won't take them to Seymour as we done went around with this Vet over Tiffanie and she won't be touching any more of my Yorkies!

Is this true? Would they have to do Surgery on Sage in order to find out if she had an Ovarian Cyst?

I mean isn't there some other test to find this out?

Do Yorkies usually have trouble with heat cycles? Is this something that is in their Breed?

I know she may not even have one (Cyst) but I think ahead when it comes to my Yorkies and go through all the "What Ifs".

I've tried to look the Ovarian Cyst up on the web and went here at YT and found this thread:
#5 Post
http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...=ovarian+cysts

I don't understand a thing it's saying, please help me to understand this post!!

Should I wait till April 25th and see if she stops spotting by then? I mean if they can't tell me when I take her in then what good will it do to take her in?

Is there some other test they can do to try to help me find out what is going on with her?

I know I'll have to take her to Bedford or Scottsburg to see Dr. Kim or Dr. Clint (She did say Kim is at the Brownstown office sometimes 1 Sat. out of the month) I just don't know what to do.

Can they tell by looking at her that something is wrong with her Heat Cycle?

I've tried to split this up so U can answer these questions for me easier for me.

Please help me I just feel so confused & lost on this and don't want Sage to suffer over any of this. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on her. & still no breeding No chances of it no where no time

I honestly do not know for dogs but I know for people, you can have an ultrasound to check for a cyst. I can't see why a dog couldn't have an ultrasound as well. I think the ultrasound can't always say for sure that it's a cyst but if you track it you can get a pretty good idea. Good Luck figuring it out!

I am sorry to hear your little girl is still having these problems. I read the other thread you provided and it was very informative. Like it said, there could be a number of things causing this problem. It could be cystitis, prolonged proestrus, vaginitis or a number of other problems. Several of these conditions require antibiotic treatment. If I were you I would print out the other thread and take a copy with you when you go see a vet. The post also mentioned testing for hypothyroidism. Your only other choice would be to just wait it out. If her problem is just prolonged proestrus then she could just have a normal heat later. I know it is frustrating. I have never had a female have a heat cycle like that. My females all come in every 6 to 9 months. I hope everything works out but honestly it sounds like it might require a lot of testing to know what is really going on.

Does she appear to be in pain or uncomfortable?

Cysts can be very painful, especially if they burst.

Sage doesn't act like she's uncomfortable at all and doesn't act like she is in no pain, she romps and plays, fights with her playmates, doesn't whine or anything like that, eats/drinks normal, jumps in our laps, Not a thing has changed with her anywhere except the spotting.

Hmmmm. I don't have any thing more to offer, except as said above, print out a copy and take it with you to the vet. Only see the vet that you are most comfortable with. I've gotten some very bad advice from vets before, so be sure you are comfortable with that person and that the advice sounds okay to you.

Best wishes,

i would take her somewhere and have the ultrasound or at least another vet. My two girls that are five both bleed for thirty days. it starts light then red, then stra colored again then red again and back and forth. But that is because they are older. The one I have in heat now has been bleeding for 18 days but she has gone almost out of heat now. This girl that is in now was in only five months ago.

I thought I'd let U all know I think Sage is finally out of her Heat Cycle. She stopped her spotting 100% as of Tue. 4/15/08 & she hasn't went one drop since. So I think with it being her 1 heat and all it was a Split Heat Cycle. I feel so much better now and she is still just her ol' self. So full of it. LOL. Thanks for all U're thoughts and help on her .

Glad to hear it. Since we've never had a split heat, I learned something with this post. Thanks.

Me either this is my 1st. I sure did learn something with her. Keep U're boys up for longer then the normal 21 days lol if I had of turned them back loose together like I was thinking about doing then we might have had puppies so that was a good lesson for me. I just hope all her heat cycles don't go this way.

I'm glad Sage is better now.
I have no experience with split heat, so I didn't have input on this and read it thru so if it ever comes up with one of my girls.
Hopefully Sage will not do this her next heat.

I had a Pomeranian that had a split heat!! I didnt know anything about them. She came into heat, went out of heat. I then watched my friends pom and surprise... they were breeding. I told the vet all the dates and he said that the male must have "pulled" her back in. Anyway the male was twice her size and i was really worried about the pregnancy but she had three healthy babies!!! Scary though!!
