Can anyone help? 1 Attachment(s) Can you help Puppies lil leg???? Allie had her puppies last night and when I got up this morning I was picking them up. Checking tummys..all looked well. But the biggest girls little back leg is messed up. The bottom part of it kinda goes backwards. I am wondering if it has something to do with her laying in vitro...Or is a deformity. Its very flexible and I can move it to the right position. Can this be fixed if I work with it therapy ?...Tape it..splint it? I have no idea. Its not in ANY pain what so ever, and I dont want to put it down. Of course when I take her to the vets in a few days I will ask them too. But today I just made the appointment and I want to start now when bones are real soft if I can do anything for her. I tried to zoom in on it this morning.I should have tried to get it without holding the leg.Its not showing how bad it is.My battery is charging Thanks in advance everyone~! |
The best thing would be to get to the vet, but I was just reading something similar about another breed, one of the large ones, sometines being born with their hind legs tooking twisted and many were put down in error before someone finally figured out it was a self-correcting thing...Don't do anything drastic... |
:( Oh I hope someone can help you. Praying she is okay... |
I would probably call the vet asap. Like you said, the bones are soft. Good luck and congrats on the puppies. |
Just found this link.... it is for kittens... but it looked similar. I didn't read through the entire post... but it looked like lots of good info! http://www.showcatsonline.com/x/brac...d_hindlegs.htm |
I would print this page out that lovelilly posted and take it to the vet so he can help you approach this venture. I have never ran into this but I have seen many different problems that breeders have had with legs etc. It is amazing that sometimes these things can be corrected but you need to work directly with your vet when you have something like this. Best of luck and keep us updated Deana Prestigeous Yorkies |
Thanks for the link!!! And I wil do that Deana I called the vet have appointment for Wed. Here..in the country where I live I am sure they would say put her down. But I already know if I dont keep her, IF I dont get attached to her ..:) someone who wants her even if shes not perfect. I would never let them put her down. She healthy as can be. And it is better even from last night. Last night it was flipped almost totally backwards. Thats why I'm thinking she was crowded in there and I can work with it. The sooner the better. Hoping someone has or knows someone who has dealt with it tells me the best way they did it until I get there Weds. I couldnt find anything online..So thanks again!!! You're all GREAT!! |
here's the piece I mentioned.... |

A bit later I heard a whimpering and low and behold this pup was alive. I took him to the vet for help and he suggested to put him down I said OH NO you don't understand this pup wants to live. I would not hear of him being put to death! He wanted to live and I felt horrible because I had dozed off and he went thru this. :( Anyways he had one hind leg a bit shorter and not much of toes. He is now approaching 7 years and is the life of a lil older lady in a high rise his name is Riley as in Life of Riley. So I understand all to well about the well lets put it down. :( But when vets see we are educated on the fact that they can be helped they are more willing to help. Deana Prestigeous Yorkies |

I've read recently about a couple of dogs having a bad back leg on the sick and emergency forum. They were referring to it as a straight leg. Don't know if it's the same as yours is showing, just wanted to tell you what I saw about a bad leg. |
Any success stories here on YT? I wanted to add... That baby girls foot looks exactly like the first PIC of the kitten on the red on that site. More so then the pads being inverted like in the bulldogs site. Thank you both again. I am going to start working with this little girl even before the vets Weds. Any success stories here on YT? Thanks again. |
We have a little girl that was born pretty much as you described in your original post, only in her case it was both legs. I could tell when she first crawled that something wasn't right. I waited to go to the vet until we had the tails docked (at 3 days) . She said the bones were more like cartilage at that point so let's wait until her first shot for an x-ray. Well, I did as she said and when the x-ray was done she had twisted femurs. By that point she looked to the eye like she has severe luxated patellas and the vet said there was nothing to be done for her. We kept her (Bijou) and today she is the happiest little girl you will ever meet. She will be 2 years old this July and doesn't let her handicap get in her way. Last December I had a chance to speak with a vet that is an orthopaedic specialist and he said there was a chance her condition could have been lessened had her legs been wrapped to coax them to straighten out while the bones were still soft. It's too late for Bijou but with your little baby maybe there is hope if she is seen promptly by a specialist. Don't expect miracles but if the condition can be lessened at all it will benefit your baby. Do not wait. There is a small window of time available while the bones are somewhat pliable. I do hope for a good outcome for your little one. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |
Debbi once again I have never seen this before this will be a learning experience that I hope you share every detail with us... all the best for those little ones |
I am sorry your baby is having this problem. I do know one breeder that had a pup born with a broken leg. Somehow the leg got hung up in a twisted position when it was coming out and the leg was broke. Unfortunately the vets could not fix it but the breeder kept the puppy and it is doing fine. I am not sure what it looked like. Hopefully your baby will be okay. |
The vet can probably rig up a splint for the pup's leg. The pup is young and the bones are still soft and hardening. Good luck! |

I would have to agree your vet should be able to rig up something. My vet will not just put something down because of a deformity etc,it would have to be life threatening before he would put it to sleep. My vet is a farm vet also and will try it all before he gives up and will put something to sleep. We raised minis for about 9 yrs and we had a colt once who had a deformity in his front legs because of how he layed in utero, vets came looked and they thought that was the deal with his legs ,and he did come out of it but it took almost a month for him to straighten up on them.He was only 18 inches tall but was a big boy body wise. |

I bet hes adorable! I havent put a splint on yet. Just tape. Its already looking a bit better already! Since this morning its not curled all the way side ways and flipped in. At least I think so. Hope its not the shock of first seeing it wearing off Allie is so antsy with these new puppies , I didn't want to chance her biting it off and something worse happening with that leg. So I thought for now...just a bit of gauze and med tape. It does straighten it out. I'll keep you all up to date |

Good luck with her foot Debbie |
Update 2 Attachment(s) I took the tape off this morning. I am very happy with how its coming along with just one day taping it. Its not turned no where near as badly. It does look a little smaller then the other leg. Not shorter..but smaller.I really do think she was laying up against something in utero that caused this. But I posted a couple pics I just took. It does look better. Im pleased so far |
from the first pic you posted a day or two ago it does look better...im so glad to see that it seems to be working...does mommy try to take the tape off? |

I watched her real close all day yesterday It does seem to be working ...Im glad you thought it looked like it too Yesterdays pic..I held her foot out. It looked a LOT worse then that pic show. It was just like that kittys I'm so happy...she may not be perfect she may even limp a bit...Thats a long way off. But she will be loved |
im so glad the tape is working out...all they need is a little love and attention and it looks like you are sure giving her that....i am trying to learn all i can before i get a female....because i would love to have puppies to nurture in my home before they go to forever homes.....i dont want to quote quote breed but list a litter or two and then see from there...it is a while down the road though...i just got my male Last July.....he is my little stud muffin....he just turned 1 so now we are looking for "girlfriends".......just trying to learn all i can |
I would not take any more chances with that baby's leg. Please take her to a Vet. and let him find the problem and decided on the appropriate action to take. It could be a problem in the hip or a dislocation. You never know. |

I changed the appointment until Thurs as the puppies were so little. None of the have hit the 4 oz mark yet. I wanted to put off tails and dew claws till they are a day older since they're so small. No I dont know for sure what the problems is. But I am doing the best I can with what I have. What I have is a laid off husband....among other things. :::sigh::::: Our vet here in the country would not advise spending lots of money to fix this puppys leg. They cull animals here like this. I'm saving the little girls leg the best way I can and praying for the best. ::::sniff sniff:::::: :*( |

Layed of hubby:( UGH I do know what that is like my hubby gets weeks of vacation to take off.I am a home day care provider and it is alike another child here for the day:) |
Debbi.....from what i saw of the pics i think you are doing a great job the little one's leg.....and as for layed off hubby.....well i understand where he is coming from too.....i lost my job last April and i know the financial strain and emotional strain it puts on both of you.......as for me i got my little Smokey in July after i lost my job in April .....i dont know how i would handle it without him.....he has truely been a God send.........they truely are one of God's most wonderful creations.......God Bless you and your family (fur family too) |
leg It looks like an inverted knee cap...but these things are tricky at this age to determine 100%. Sometimes legs are momentarily curled, due to a bad position in the uterus, if so, they straighten by 8 weeks or sooner...other times it is a deformity in the bone or knee cap itself...if it is due to a bad position, it will straighten and stay straight as a rule...if it is a deformed knee cap, it will need splinting for a few weeks to a few months, depends on the degree... surgery is needed sometimes....I have seen breeders ignore this and the knee cap will literally bend the opposite way...my vet said these conditions are painful if not corrected. |
Oh Debbi, I 'm so sorry. Just keep working with it. Anything you can do will be an improvement and then see what the vet says. I thought your babies were awfully small (compared to my brutes), glad you are waiting to dock tails etc. |
