Ruby is holding her own. Small amounts of leakage, but nothing bloody like before. She is so restless. Going outside to potty every 30 minutes or so. She just can't seem to settle. I'm going to take her temp tonight and start keeping track again.

Thanks for asking. Looks like we will be on puppy watch at the same time for Ruby and your baby. At least I hope they both hold until next week.

Default Cleft puppy update

I posted this in another thread section, but thought I'd give you guys an update here too. Thank you for all your support here! You are great! I also wanted to say congrats to Debbie on your little girl's leg. I love those sucess stories & it's people like you looking for ways to make it right, instead of just accepting it, that makes you awesome! I want to be just like that & help others to do the same! I really admire you! Keep it up!

Okay, so on to the sad update....I had such a hard time with this decision on what was best to do. I've always been a fighter & like to look at the brighter side & hope fot the best in any situation. Yesterday afternnon we had to put the puppy to sleep, which was so out of character for me & something I was fortunate to not have to do, until now.
YorkieNewbie22 posted pictures on the other thread of her puppy which from the looks alone, that's EXACTLY what my little guy looked like. I had such a hard time finding pictures to see what to compare to. Those of you who don't know, you'll want to check it out.
I was excited to feed the little one with the dropper/bottles until he got old enough to get to more solids & was SO attached because of doing it. I had talked to my husband about keeping him, so that was the plan. I read so much about the complications that come though with pnemonia, liquid in their lungs & the surgeries when they have the cleft lip & palate. Many with minor clefts seem to have in grow in as older pups & do just fine. It was so encouraging to find success stories & see cute pictures of dogs that made it through. It also seemed that the hardest part was just getting them through the first 6-8 weeks. I was fine with the sacrifice for that long if it meant saving a life & having a little guy who wouldn't suffer. I told myself that as long as the vet didn't say that it was severe, I would work through it no matter what. From what I read, the sever pallats can still be correctable through surgeries, but it seemed to me to be a very risky surgery that had a complication rate; especially if it was severe. Plus, I realy thought it was just a cleft lip & not the pallate at all. Boy was I wrong. Now I know better what to look for though. With the vet saying it was very severe, it just broke my heart. I have so much more appreciation for those of you who have been breeding for a long time & even those who haven't, but have to make theses tough calls when something goes wrong with a puppy. I really do look up to you all so much more now & think that anyone thinking about getting into breeding needs to take a look at these situations & ask how they might handle them. For me, I don't think I have it in me to do it again. It's not worth the risk. I absolutely LOVE my Yorkies to pieces & couldn't image losing a mommy or another puppy. (Maybe this is all just in my current sorrows, we'll see). Anyway, sorry to ramble & share the negative story... thanks again to all of you who have been following our story. I hope it helps someone else sometime too. I wish the best for all of you! I know these things don't happen often, but thought it may help to be a little prepared & give a little insight to anyone who may need it now, or later!
P.S. Sonya & Debbie both PMd me offering to post pictures for me, so you should see them sometime soon on the cleft post too. (Thanks ladies)!

I wanted to say that I think your decision was ok.
There is nothing surgically that would be done for this puppy at one day old.

I think it was very wise of you to allow this puppy to nurse for a while before exposing it to anything!
I hope all goes well for her.

OMG i cant believe the way things have turned on the poster Blitz. . The way I see it she was giving a bit of good advice, advice that I would also give. I do believe that she was maybe just a little shocked that the vet put the OP off from seeing the puppy for a few days, that was also my reaction. I never once seen her suggest that the OP doesn't indeed love her puppys, this never entered my mind either.

I no that we have some very good breeders here on Yt, that might indeed have seen this condition before, and have seen it correct itself. But for me it is something I have never seen, and would be worried to death about it and want to see a vet right away.

Miley's Mom: We were all posting our belly pix on the April puppies thread, but of course she is much bigger now. Since she has three on one side, she looks like she has a weird growth coming out of her belly on that side. Ha. She is soooo uncomfortable! I'll try to get more pictures of her tomorrow and maybe we should start a new thread since I can't find the April puppies thread now. I know the thread was very long. If you find it, send me a message so I can get hooked back up to it.

Keep posting. I find it so helpful to have the input and company of others who are going through the same things.

The other thread was closed but I felt somebody needed to defend a member here!

I think she had good advice but they she took it to far... NanaDtreasures mentioned several times that she was going to the vet she was waiting for them to get a little bigger. Walking is not life threatening and NanaDtreasures living on a farm and all seems like she is experienced with animals. I think she was just looking for others to talk to about it. She was going to take the puppy to the vet... today I think?

Blitz had an era of judgement in her comment and she can choose to deny that or not. She again made the comment when she said she only breeds "show quality dogs"... well guess what most of American can not afford show dog quality nor do we want it. There is a reason for the small hobby breeder and MANY of us have babies just because of them. Babies that are loved dearly and cared for as if they were our children.

I get really sick of the fighting back and forth between the two sides... I am sticking with YT because their are wonderful people around here and I can just not click on the threads that choose to single people out.

I came on here to this thread to defend NanaDtreasures because she has been nothing but a sweet women who loves animals.

Even if it is something we have not seen before and we call our vet doesnt mean we get into them pronto,I know she spoke with them and if they are not worried why should we?

I have went back through Blitz replies to make sure that I had not missed something. Am sorry but I just cant see anything wrong with her advice, I really cant. . As I said in the closed thread I would be worried to death about this situation, am sorry I just would. I think she was just shocked that the vet put the OP of a visit for a few days, and I was also.
She never once said that the OP didnt love her puppys, and that never entered my mind, never, an it still doesn't.
At the end of the day I think the advice was good advice, and if she had of given it to me, I would never have felt insulted, I mean would that not be the first thing you would do??.
And hey whats wrong with her saying she only breeds "show quality dogs", she ain't the only 1 on here that does that. In fact it is 1 of the on going controversial debates that go on here. And I must agree with you that I totally agree with the hobby breeder.

The advice she gave was fine, but I think the problem came when it wasn't just left as that, advice. People got defensive and started arguing about it on both sides of the question.
