Can you help Puppies lil leg????
Allie had her puppies last night and when I got up this morning
I was picking them up. Checking tummys..all looked well.
But the biggest girls little back leg is messed up.
The bottom part of it kinda goes backwards.
I am wondering if it has something to do with her laying in vitro...Or is a deformity.
Its very flexible and I can move it to the right position.
Can this be fixed if I work with it therapy ?...Tape it..splint it?
I have no idea. Its not in ANY pain what so ever, and I dont want to put it down.
Of course when I take her to the vets in a few days I will ask them too.
But today I just made the appointment and I want to start now when bones are real soft if I can do anything for her.
I tried to zoom in on it this morning.I should have tried to get it without holding the leg.Its not showing how bad it is.My battery is charging
Thanks in advance everyone~!

I'm not understanding something here. You have a puppy in need of veterinary care and they give you an appointment in a few days? I respectfully suggest you barge in there with your puppy. I'm not understanding this at all, I'm sorry. This is life and death for this puppy, not something to fool around with.

Does anyone know an orthopedic specialist in your area?

HI !
The rest of the post goes on to explain.
She is doing better,Now it looks even better then this morning.
Do you really think this is a life or death matter?????????
I'm doing the best I can for this lil one and am real happy with how her leg is looking...very happy

im no breeder but i dont think a leg that is not perfect is a life or death situation......i have seen even three-legged doggies live very happy lives....dont worry about what everyone is saying ...that little one is getting the best attention and is gonna be fine

YorkieRose 04-08-2008 06:22 PM

vet

This is NOT an emergancy...there is plenty of time to see the vet...tail docking time is fine if the vet does them for you...it is very stressful for a newborn to be poked and probed by a vet in a non-emergancy situation...these things will keep...the breeder has done nothing wrong..infact she is using wisdom...with a tiny pup there is little the vet will do right now..and it may correct...and if not, it can be splinted or surgery, but do you really think a vet would do it to a newborn...it can cause more harm then good and may not be needed...

I have had breeders come crying to me over a deformity, wanting answer right away.....9 times out of 10 the problem is long gone by 8 weeks...AND I have seen breeders put this type puppy down..rarely is it necessary..most everything like this corrects or is fixable with patience...relax!!!

Yes, I would consider a pup's leg very crucial to its life! I know you are doing the very best you can at home but this pup needs to be seen by a qualified vet to determine what the problem is and if anything can be done for it. In my life I've had to find a nuerologist, a cardiologist and a general surgeon to deal with issues my pups were born with.

I am glad you are happy with the puppies improvement but you don't even know what's wrong with it or what can be done and time may be of the essence. You can get good support on a forum but it is no substitute for veterinary care.

Please bring her to a qualified veterinarian.

Well, everyone has their own way of doing things. I am not suggesting that she did anything wrong at all but I would get a doctor's opinion on whether or not it is best to wait and if so, how long I should wait. I would also like his opinion on what the problem is. It is possible that he won't know, I realize that but it's also possible that he will have seen it before. It's all about what you feel comfortable with I guess, but she did ask for help and the best advice I can give is what I would do myself. No criticism was intended.

How many people on here feel that their dogs are like their children? If your kid had a deformed leg, would you not consider that pretty close to a life or death situation?

PrestigeousYT 04-09-2008 05:15 AM

Give it up already
This really is not nice to keep on and on about this.

Was I rude? I really really didn't mean to be. Please let me know how I was rude because I was just trying to be helpful and give my best advice.

Tnyorkiemom 04-09-2008 05:17 AM

NO i do not consider a deformity of a leg as life or death...i am a surgical tech and let me tell you breathing and walking are 2 different things....yes the little pup may end up walking with a limp or even at the worst have to have the leg removed but that does not mean that it can breath and have a good quality of life....life is breathing and a heartbeat....

PrestigeousYT 04-09-2008 05:19 AM

its one thing to give advice but this has gone past giving advice.
These post are simply not nice.

She is taking the pups to have tails docked, the vet will see the pup then.
This pup is apparently doing OK and not getting worse, actually if you read the post the leg is looking better.
She did not seek this board to replace her vet care.
It is obvious she cares about her pups.

I never thought for a minute that she didn't care about her pups. That's why she was looking for advice. I know I can be passionate about things but don't take offense where none was intended. It's so easy to choose to get offended. I rarely take offense.

But anyway, I apologize to NanaD if she got offended but I this is how I am with my dogs and my kids. But I seriously cannot sleep at night if I'm worried about one of them so it's off to the pro I go.

You know my son fell in december and broke the tibia and fibula he went to ER the didn't do anything other than ace bandaid his appt for the ortho dr was 6 days later
I was upset thinking you have to be kidding me.
When we finally got to see the ortho dr he told us the reason they wait before seeing the patient is so the swelling will go down by the time the ortho dr sees them. so waiting is what the ortho drs do
