cleft As a breeder, sometimes I may sound heartless...but I have faced many situations where difficult decisions must be made to prevent undo suffering. I have found most all cleft puppies have other health issues..so I have never tried to save any...but I have had a number of friends try, only to see the puppy struggle in the care of a vet away, from its dam..then die or grow so weak it needs to be put down...I feel the same about a puppy born disemboweled..it seems simple to put them back, but infection is almost always the result and the puppy suffers. Some clefts are so mild, the pup may have a chance, but I have not found it to be so in 35 yrs... |
I\'m here! Yes I do have a cleft palate baby - she\'ll be 2 in July. Here is the thread with all my ups and downs http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...t=cleft+palate It was a long road but she made it and is here with me today. I guess the 1st thing is how severe is her cleft? Tia\'s is in her soft pallat. I bottle fed her for almost 3 months before she ate food. It was up and down and very hard to get her to gain weight. Did you vet say where the cleft is and how severe? I bought several different bottles and nipples and rotated them until I had the best way to feed. Sometime I had to even use a syringe. Whatever would work at each feeding. I fed her every hour 24/7. I raised her on a home made recipe that has more calories per cc than regular formula. No specific amount - just as much as she would take each feeding. 1 cup full fat yogart 1 tablespoon real mayo 1 egg yoke 1 teaspoon karo syrup 1 can evaporated milk or goats milk Room tempurature. As she got older I played with the recipe and added in more of certain ingrediants and added nutrical as well. I just did what I could - didn\'t follow any rules - just tried to get her to gain. She was half the size of everyone else. Mom diapered her and took care of her, I just fed her. Once she was older I had to seperate her cuz the others were too big and were too rough. Main thing is make sure not to feed to fast. You don\'t want it coming out her nose. How is she now and whats her status? Are you feeding her? I found pre-mie nipples worked the best. |
Thank you for the advise! I just wanted to say thank you for all of you helping so much to get info for me. You guys are great!! I\'m got a lot of reading up & talking to do to figure out what\'s best. I really hate to put a puppy to sleep, but also don\'t want him to suffer. Anyway, thanks again & I\'ll check out the websites & PM those suggested. I\'m just glad that mommy & the other puppy are doing great & both puppies are actually trying to nurse now. |
Breny - Thanks for coming on I was just going to PM you. I was posting my message as you were yours. The puppy is only a couple hours old. I called the emergency vet to ask what to do & they justt said that they usually recommend putting them to sleep & for me to just wait until Monday to talk with my vet. I\'m not sure what to do & to sure about feeding between now & then. Thank you for the receipe. I\'ll work on that right away. He is actually trying to nurse from mom right now. I\'m not sure how sever it is since I\'m not familiar with the types or anything. I have a lot to learn in a short amount of time. Thanks for any help you can give. I started reading your thread as well. It\'s been great! |
Another thing too, the cleft baby may "look" like it is nursing but with the cleft he will not be getting suction. The cleft prevents that, so he really isn\'t getting anything. |
I\'m here, and any help you need - I\'ll be here. Does the pup look normal on the outside? |
