From what I read from your post Breny, I kinda figured he may not be getting much suction when trying to nurse. You can tell from the outside that he has the cleft. I'll try to take a quick picture & post it.

I have seen cleft lip pups survive..a friend had two in one litter, both lived...the only clefts I have had could only be seen if the mouth was opened (roof of the mouth)..

Awwwwwwwwwww I'm so glad that breny and the others came to help.
I want to read this whole thread too.
I dont know anything about this.
I just know it has to be a work of love...for breny to go thru all she did.
I want to be prepared...But I dont know if I could go thru it all.
Im sure a lot depends on how severe it is.
So she had one more? Do you think shes done?

I just figured out how to post with the person's quote above... I'm a little slow. Missy is done with her two boys. I just noticed though that the one without the noticeable cleft is making funny noises when eating, so now I'm wondering if he has one too, ut on the inside?? This is sooo stressful Missy had a litter of 3 wonderful girls last time & now it's all different. Not sure what causes the cleft & now wondering if it was something I did or didn't do?? I tried to attach pics, but it says they are too big. I tried cropping them, but not sure what else to do to get them into a smaller file size. I'll keep trying

Can you get your pinky finger in to feel the top of his mouth.

I went to that website & am trying to find pictures to better tell what I'm dealing with & how severe it may be. The puppy with the noticable issue, I think may have a cleft lip (maybe with or without a cleft palate). It's very noticable on the outside. Again, I'm still learning. The other littleboy was making a funny noise while nursing, so now I'm wondering about him too, although he seems to be quieter now, so maybe it was a fluke. So is the way to tell for sure to put my finger in his mouth to see if I get suction? Also, do I need to tube feed them, or do you think I could bottle feed them? I'm so nervous to tube feed, but will do anything I can for these little guys too. ??

You can feel it with the underside of your pinky.
I've seen baby kitty with it. be careful...
See if you can open his mouth and look on top if he has a roof to the top of his mouth.I have never had to tubefeed yet...just bottle.
I think it depends how bad it is if you can even try bottle feeding..but not sure
I dread this too....its touchy...I wish I could be more help hun :(

Sometimes puppies make funny noises when nursing...have you been to the vet? I'm sorry I haven't posted since my first one but I hope things work out for you. I've never had a pup with cleft palate so my heart goes out to you!

I haven't been to the vet. I called them & they said they would just put him to sleep, so I may want to wait until Monday & see my regular vet. From the outside, it's very noticable that he has a deformity. I haven't checked inside his mouth yet, but will do that along with the other puppy. I'm pretty scared to though since I worry about how fragile they are just being born a couple hours ago. I am heading to Petsmart now to get a bottle, nutrical & more formula to be better prepared for the night. Right now I'm glad we moved back to Phoenix, since there are many more resources to me here. :-) I'll be back on in 30 minutes.

sorry to go crazy on posting, I'm just desperate! Okay, I just did the suction test on both puppies (putting my pinky in their mouth to see how the suction was). Both seem to be getting suction just fine. Now I'm wodering if it's just a cleft lip & if that means he'll be able to nurse on his own. ?? Should I still go get bottles & feed that way just in case. I'm still reading, but that part is still unclear to me. How do I know how severe & what to compare to & is there a difference between cleft lip & cleft palate on how to care for these guys? It sounds like if they have cleft lip, they often have cleft palate. If they are getting suction does that mean they don't have cleft palate? Sorry for the many questions!!

My cleftbaby had no noticable signs on the outside. her's is in her "solf palet" which is in the rear of her mouth. It has not been repaired, she still has it and will be 2 in a few months.

I didn't tube feed. I was scared so I did the bottle. Tia only had the formula that I posted earlier, nothing else.

I would try and get a good look in there with a flash light too. It will be very hard but you need to see what your dealing with.

Have you fed him yet at all?

Another thing too. Weigh him alot. I used a digital scale and weighed in grams as you can tell easier if they are losing faster with grams and gaining. Tia lost and gained...it was a battle.

Any help you need, let me know!

From what I've read is milk coming out of the nose?

Ok, if you are waiting to take to vet till Monday all I can suggest is if they are nursing and tummies are round and they aren't crying let them be for now. Keep them warm. Does that make sense? But in all honesty I'd be taking them to the vet and it's your choice as to what they do as in putting one to sleep it's your choice not theirs and I'd go from there..

ok, when he is nursing... after he is done..is his belly full and round??? Do you have a scale? If his belly is full and round then he would be getting milk from mom.

I'll try for a better look. I haven't fed them at all yet. That's why I'm freaking out. They appear to have been nursing, but like I said, I'm not sure if they are getting anything. Should I keep them from nursing? So did you feed that receipe from the very beginning & that was it, no formula & all bottle fed?

Again, are they crying? Are tummies nice and round? Let them nurse if they will...if you are that freaked out take them to the vet tonight.
