She said it wouldnt breath for a while...so it may be even more then that wrong. Hopefully breny will get in touch with her and decided whats best to do. Maybe put the poor thing to sleep :( tiggerr36792 I posted the link to the thread...thank u |
cleft As a breeder, sometimes I may sound heartless...but I have faced many situations where difficult decisions must be made to prevent undo suffering. I have found most all cleft puppies have other health issues..so I have never tried to save any...but I have had a number of friends try, only to see the puppy struggle in the care of a vet away, from its dam..then die or grow so weak it needs to be put down...I feel the same about a puppy born disemboweled..it seems simple to put them back, but infection is almost always the result and the puppy suffers. Some clefts are so mild, the pup may have a chance, but I have not found it to be so in 35 yrs... |
I'm here! Yes I do have a cleft palate baby - she'll be 2 in July. Here is the thread with all my ups and downs http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...t=cleft+palate It was a long road but she made it and is here with me today. I guess the 1st thing is how severe is her cleft? Tia's is in her soft pallat. I bottle fed her for almost 3 months before she ate food. It was up and down and very hard to get her to gain weight. Did you vet say where the cleft is and how severe? I bought several different bottles and nipples and rotated them until I had the best way to feed. Sometime I had to even use a syringe. Whatever would work at each feeding. I fed her every hour 24/7. I raised her on a home made recipe that has more calories per cc than regular formula. No specific amount - just as much as she would take each feeding. 1 cup full fat yogart 1 tablespoon real mayo 1 egg yoke 1 teaspoon karo syrup 1 can evaporated milk or goats milk Room tempurature. As she got older I played with the recipe and added in more of certain ingrediants and added nutrical as well. I just did what I could - didn't follow any rules - just tried to get her to gain. She was half the size of everyone else. Mom diapered her and took care of her, I just fed her. Once she was older I had to seperate her cuz the others were too big and were too rough. Main thing is make sure not to feed to fast. You don't want it coming out her nose. How is she now and whats her status? Are you feeding her? I found pre-mie nipples worked the best. |
Thank you for the advise! I just wanted to say thank you for all of you helping so much to get info for me. You guys are great!! I'm got a lot of reading up & talking to do to figure out what's best. I really hate to put a puppy to sleep, but also don't want him to suffer. Anyway, thanks again & I'll check out the websites & PM those suggested. I'm just glad that mommy & the other puppy are doing great & both puppies are actually trying to nurse now. |
Breny - Thanks for coming on I was just going to PM you. I was posting my message as you were yours. The puppy is only a couple hours old. I called the emergency vet to ask what to do & they justt said that they usually recommend putting them to sleep & for me to just wait until Monday to talk with my vet. I'm not sure what to do & to sure about feeding between now & then. Thank you for the receipe. I'll work on that right away. He is actually trying to nurse from mom right now. I'm not sure how sever it is since I'm not familiar with the types or anything. I have a lot to learn in a short amount of time. Thanks for any help you can give. I started reading your thread as well. It's been great! |
Another thing too, the cleft baby may "look" like it is nursing but with the cleft he will not be getting suction. The cleft prevents that, so he really isn't getting anything. |
I'm here, and any help you need - I'll be here. Does the pup look normal on the outside? |
Cleft baby From what I read from your post Breny, I kinda figured he may not be getting much suction when trying to nurse. You can tell from the outside that he has the cleft. I'll try to take a quick picture & post it. |
cleft I have seen cleft lip pups survive..a friend had two in one litter, both lived...the only clefts I have had could only be seen if the mouth was opened (roof of the mouth).. |

I want to read this whole thread too. I dont know anything about this. I just know it has to be a work of love...for breny to go thru all she did. I want to be prepared...But I dont know if I could go thru it all. Im sure a lot depends on how severe it is. So she had one more? Do you think shes done? Poor lil boy :( |

I've seen baby kitty with it. be careful... See if you can open his mouth and look on top if he has a roof to the top of his mouth.I have never had to tubefeed yet...just bottle. I think it depends how bad it is if you can even try bottle feeding..but not sure I dread this too....its touchy...I wish I could be more help hun :( |

I haven't been to the vet. I called them & they said they would just put him to sleep, so I may want to wait until Monday & see my regular vet. From the outside, it's very noticable that he has a deformity. I haven't checked inside his mouth yet, but will do that along with the other puppy. I'm pretty scared to though since I worry about how fragile they are just being born a couple hours ago. I am heading to Petsmart now to get a bottle, nutrical & more formula to be better prepared for the night. Right now I'm glad we moved back to Phoenix, since there are many more resources to me here. :-) I'll be back on in 30 minutes. |
sorry to go crazy on posting, I'm just desperate! Okay, I just did the suction test on both puppies (putting my pinky in their mouth to see how the suction was). Both seem to be getting suction just fine. Now I'm wodering if it's just a cleft lip & if that means he'll be able to nurse on his own. ?? Should I still go get bottles & feed that way just in case. I'm still reading, but that part is still unclear to me. How do I know how severe & what to compare to & is there a difference between cleft lip & cleft palate on how to care for these guys? It sounds like if they have cleft lip, they often have cleft palate. If they are getting suction does that mean they don't have cleft palate? Sorry for the many questions!! |
My cleftbaby had no noticable signs on the outside. her's is in her "solf palet" which is in the rear of her mouth. It has not been repaired, she still has it and will be 2 in a few months. I didn't tube feed. I was scared so I did the bottle. Tia only had the formula that I posted earlier, nothing else. I would try and get a good look in there with a flash light too. It will be very hard but you need to see what your dealing with. Have you fed him yet at all? Another thing too. Weigh him alot. I used a digital scale and weighed in grams as you can tell easier if they are losing faster with grams and gaining. Tia lost and gained...it was a battle. Any help you need, let me know! |

Ok, if you are waiting to take to vet till Monday all I can suggest is if they are nursing and tummies are round and they aren't crying let them be for now. Keep them warm. Does that make sense? But in all honesty I'd be taking them to the vet and it's your choice as to what they do as in putting one to sleep it's your choice not theirs and I'd go from there.. |
ok, when he is nursing... after he is done..is his belly full and round??? Do you have a scale? If his belly is full and round then he would be getting milk from mom. |
