And in the big picture, it does make more sense to spend your time fighting those breeding in deplorable conditions first....and then tackle those not breeding to standard.

there are still more than a few of what I say bad BYB or whatever you want
to tag it out there look at southeast texas.com and view adds same old people posting adds on litters some of these adds stay on there 365 days a year
no down time claim to be caring loving breeders home raised ect ect...
even advertise showing . This is life and I know it
but the fact is there is more than a few out there who I am not talking
about have yorkies that just don't have what you said the right color
that is off beat to this post the breeders that bother me the most are those who have problems and turn there head and blame on everthing else and will not get health checks on parents or puppies and continue to pump out the puppies. that bothers me!!! Will they take back puppys that don't work out or have health issues I doubt it especially after the 48 hr. health guarantee
is up!!! Breeding females heat after heat up to the ripe old age
of 9 oh yah the biggest sad story I have heard is well she just loves
puppys and I cannot deny her of that!!! she looks at me and says she wants babies!!!PLEASE!!!! already had most likley 12 litters maybe more.(sick) They are the ones that just keep
kidding thereselves or trying to believe because they do give food and water to these dogs its all right and they live in a house filled with over 20 breeding dogs breeding every heat!!!
running lose in the house that its o.k. all for the love of the breed. wake up and smell the coffee!! JUST BREED RESPONSIBlE. That is what this thread is about!!!

Doesn't this look like Sandy thinks breeding should be banned? Who else is left? Yes, I know someone is going to come back and say "only responsible breeders should be allowed to breed." Lovely, now who is going to police that? Shutting down puppy mills is probably possible, at least the worst ones. Too much intervention beyond that will only drive the business underground where it will get really sleazy.

ALSO, stop yapping about shelters full of dogs. When is the last time any of you saw a Yorkshire Terrier in a shelter?

Go to the rescues!!! THERE ARE PLENTY most toy dogs don't go to shelters you are right.
But they do go to rescues!!!YAP ON SANDY!!!!

I was referring to dogs bred off-standard because that was mentioned in an earlier post replied to the post which I quoted. No one is arguing the fact that such breeders as you describe do exist, and I have not seen anyone on this thread defend them. I was merely pointing out that there are many so-called "byb's" who are producing healthy dogs, just not to standard.

I am not sure why you are so upset, as it seems we agree that the larger issue at hand is the breeding of unhealthy dogs in unhealthy environments. I apologize if my comments indicated that I condone this practice.

As a side note, any person who knows anything about advertising would want their ads out there all the time. You are right, many ads are there all the time because they have puppies all the time. I am not defending the practice of having litters constantly. But the mere fact that they let an ad run continuously doesn't mean they have puppies all the time and are a bad breeder--they could just be a good advertiser.

Great post!

My Lady is a rescue from a BYB and she has a laundry list of genetic health issues including epilepsy, diabetes, hypothyroidism, heart murmur ..... the list goes on. I spend close to $5,000 a year on her medications, diabetic supplies and vet care (excluding emergencies which are more). As you say, the real cost is not financial, but the heartbreak these poorly bred dogs can bring.

I am and will continue to be outspoken about buying from responsible breeders and I have a very narrow definition of what that is.

Our breed is #2 in popularity and that's because puppymills and BYB's can supply the demand and MUCH LESS are bought from show breeders. This thread is about "RESPONSIBLE" breeding and that's whether you show or not PERIOD!
If I'm radical to you then so be it but it won't change my opinions or show/breeding practices just because you disagree with the way I do things. Many breeders disagree with me but it doesn't mean I'm going to sway away from my convictions and beliefs and practices. I have a life thank you and without that life I wouldn't be where I am today! My life is filled with the love and support of my husband, my family, my child, my grandchild and my yorkies and I work and have a very full life. I just happen to be passionate about the yorkie breed and the way it's heading is not pretty!

Actually, I don't believe most of the dogs in shelters came from puppymills (although many do)...I believe more come from backyard breeders and irresponsible petowners whose dogs have "accidents" (which would fall under the BYB category). More dogs are born to backyard breeders than puppymills, so both are a terrible problem.

Some of us are not defensive about the issue, per se. Some are defending the rights of others to have an opinion of their own without being stomped upon.
