Wow I never thought about how simple and easy this would be even to have school kids to be able to help a lot and it would get their mindset on the value of helping the animals early on that can make a big impact.
They can easily get their hands on the boxes and old towels etc.
Maybe we should start a thread on YT and challenge each member to help get a fundraising drive in their area. And then report back with what donations were made to the rescues/shelters in their areas.
Seems its so easy to sit back and say we need to do this and that and I take this stand or that stand etc.
But lets actually get everyone really doing something about it, I know the Oprah show really opened up a lot of eyes and hearts and no better timing than now!
A lot of us do it already but we can do so much more.

In San Antonio, my mother was looking to place a stray cat into a rescue. She was told that they do not take cats, only dogs because cats can live outdoors on their own. The rescue centers there have put the dog pound out of business (not sure how I feel about that one), and are not taking cats. I am not a cat "lover" but feel we should take care of all domesticated animals.

I feel these rescue societies are deleting a service to animals, as well as you said above, "charging too much for a rescue." Now S.A. will have a huge wild cat population which makes me sick. I can't bear to think of all those cats starving on the streets, and the life they will live.

I don't think all the "rescue" system is well thought out. It still remains to be a big problem.

Yes, I bought my Yorkie. We've rescued a dog before and had a temperment problem and due to having children had to rehome him to a person without children. I agree with the original post as well.

The area shelters usually have a "wish list" on their sites.

It brings me to tears, as my local shelter lists things we throw away.

Are you saying San Antonio has NO Humane Society?

Also, the "dog pound" is NOT a business.

Your mother maybe speaking of a "no kill" dog shelter, which is privately
funded for dogs. I foster rescue dogs, and will not accept cats.

I will do some research on this, as I cannot believe San Antonio shelters
turn down ALL cats.

I very much respect the true reputable rescues that are doing it ONLY for the good of the animals. Not for $$...thats just wrong...
But you know we all have to live with the things we do in life...
And answer for it someday .
So I hope most are doing it for the right reasons.:thumbup:

Maybe for us yorkie lovers that can't or choose not to adopt from a rescue or the humane society, be it because of breed or health issues, we can instead donate a little of our time or a little money to help them out.
After seeing the show yesterday.
Once my life is back on track I will think alot more often of donating supplies and money to help these poor animals.

Our Girl Scout troop collected towels and blankets for the local Humane Society. It was a very worthwhile community project.

Pet stores I believe were the main target. Many people were not educated on the whereabouts of which the puppy they were purchasing really came from. Do not purchase from petshops. Also many people neither can afford nor want to spend thousands for a purebred puppy. So they look for that bargain pup. And the brokers, petstores(offer financing) and backyard breeders prey on these individuals. Brokers claim to be breeders, petstores claim to be ethical. If breeders were to offer their puppies at more reasonable prices maybe more people could turn to breeders instead of petstores and backyard brokers.The cycle will keep repeating as long as the demand for the need to have a designer dog is present. Petstores that sell puppy mill animals need to be accountable.

if you want a small breed dog from the pound just let me know. The oklahoma city shelter is FULL of them. everytime i go there are SO many small breeds that nobody adopts. Then they have a 50/50 chance of moving on to the adoption room. I have seen a yorkie on one visit. He has serve mange and that is why he was going to a rescue.

As for rescue's charging an arm and a leg, not all of them are in it for money. My little Lily that i rescued came from a puppy mill. she has alot of behavioral issues and her "donation fee" was only $75. The lady i got her from turned down 10 people before i came along. She will not adopt dogs that have special needs to anyone. I do believe that there are many rescues out there who are just trying to help the animals. i think that people need to realize how much it actually costs just to spay/neuter, utd on shots, and any other medical attention. it adds up fast!

The Humane society will not accept cats in S.A.
The dog pound in S.A. has been closed (what I meant by out of business). It was a place people could go to adopt a pet (I did so when I lived there years ago) - at a reasonable fee.

LORAIN COUNTY, Ohio -- Lorain County is having a problem with stray cats, and the county commissioner came up with a new way to catch them: stun them with Taser guns.

In the latest commissioner meeting, Betty Blair said stunning the cats would make them easier to catch and spay or neuter.

No other officials have jumped on the proposal yet, so Lorain County is still looking over options to control its cat crisis.

I am "owned" by:

a 1 yr old yorkie poodle mix- adopted at 7 wks old. No health problems, no behavior problems, perfect dog. and ADOPTED! he weighs 5.5 lbs so he is still small.

a 4 yr old pit bull mix- adopted as a puppy. obviiously not the breed many ppl want, but she is perfect. Well behaved and no health problems.

"co-own" w/ my mom-
a 5 yr old yorkie/chihuahua (our best guess)- adopted at btwn 6mnths and 1 yr. She is "bigger" (12 lbs), but still small. NO health problems, and definitely no behavior problems.

a 13 yr old beagle mix- adopted as a puppy. NO health problems and no behavior problems.



I have fostered:

a tiny poodle mix puppy. Came into the rescue b/c the wife bought it as a present for her hubby, hubby didn't want it. Beautiful, small dog. (it was hard not to keep it)

a 6ish yr old 4lb toy poodle. Cute as a bug, very loving, only problem was its teeth (but in the long run, not a big problem)

Small chi/minpin puppy. CUte, no behavior problems.

1yr old JRT/ Poodle mix. Small adorable, no behavior problems.

+ various other "large dogs"

I have seen countless cute, small young dogs and puppies come through the rescue I volunteer for, plus MANY come through the shelters as well. In no way are the majorityofthe dogs in shelters, old, with behavior problems, etc. Sure some of them are, but not the majority.

I'm not one of those people that believe ADOPTION is the only answer (wouldn't that be GREAT though!) Personally I believe IF you have patience you can WAIT and find almost any type of dog you want in rescue or at a shelter. But, I don't mind people supporting breeders as long as they are responsible breeders, bettering the breed, showing their dogs, etc. My criteria for what I consider a reputable and responsible breeder is pretty strict, but thats another post for another time.

I just felt bad for so many here on YT being told to adopt a puppy.
I just think its a terrible thing for someone to make another person feel bad for wanting that new special puppy of there own.
And no .....as much as I'd love to think ALL rescues are in it for the love of the animals...Sadly not all of them are...
And while I respect that you adopted all your furbabies.
I ask that you respect that maybe others have had problems with abused and neglected dogs..
Some kids have small children and dont want the risk.
Respect that they want to get a new puppy.

We had neighbors move and leave a family of kinda wild cats, one mom and one dad and one older female, and a new litter of wonderfully wild kittens that decided our yard was now theirs. So we did the human thing and bought a humane trap and caught them and took them to be spayed and neutered. The kittens found a home but the mom and the older female kitten was adopted by my sister in law and the dad hangs out at the neighbors he won't stay in anyones home he manages to slide out but he can no longer produce. I got bitten by one of these kittens during the process and had to have the tetanus shot which I had a terrible reaction to. I tell ya that was no fun. People tend to think they can just leave animals behind and someone else will take care of them. These cats were lucky but others are often not so lucky

Sorry you went thru that...

The worst thing now is all over the news with all the foreclosures of homes.
People are moving and leaving their pets in the homes.
and even worse, they say its not just because they cant take them with them.

But that they leave them to go potty all over and tear up the house.
They say they figure if the bank takes their house then let them deal with the mess. And hopefully if the animals mess up the house bad enough the banks wont get back the money in selling it.
I call this just plain cruel...How could anyone do this to an animal?

They found dead horses today or yesterday at a farm I want to say it was KY and then they found more starving.
It is just horrific out there what is going on with the animals.

One of the things that I think is bad about SOME rescues is they do not educate themselves on the breeds. I know this may take some time. We adopted a shih-tzu little female in 2006 and when I got her she was mated and being keep in a cool garage kennel that was not good for her and being feed larger chunk food that she had a hard time eating. We ended up rehoming her because she did not like men. The last straw is when she lunged at my husbands arm that he laid on the back of the couch, if he had not moved it in time she would have grabbed a hold and hurt him. I refused to give her back to rescue she had come from. She is now with a very nice lady that loves and dotes on her.
