vaccinations, shunts, and microchipping..... oh my
 

half dose vaccinating may reek more havoc if you all aren't careful...... pathogens that effect dogs are no different than those that routinely effect humans.....they mutate.....that is why our antibiotics are no longer effective against a plethora of illnesses..... Essentially, as the previous poster explained, the immune system needs a certain exposure rate to create an artificial immunity…. I never recommend half dosing, but I do push our vaccinations way back to week 12. Lepto is a no no always…. It is highly unlikely our dogs will be in contact with the virus, so we just don’t bother with it…. We generally give the first booster and send out a card with each buyer instructing their veterinarian what to do hence forth.... p.s. :eek: Vets love breeders instructing them:eek: …. Anyway, I digress into the holy land of vet-ingdom when I should be on the subject at hand…. As for PSS increase…. There is an increase in something digestive in nature; however, I am far from convinced that everything being labeled PSS is in reality… We do know there is a spike in puppies dying between 6 and 20 weeks. Lack of immunity, maybe…. Genetic Digestive Anomaly, probably….. I am also convinced if folks out there breeding are not testing each and every litter through routine fecals (looking for fatty deposits specifically) to determine if a sire / dam has an issue… we are only going to be treating a fast growing genetic disorder instead of controlling it through selective breeding….. Lastly, as for Microchipping, we routinely microchip everyone.... we have not noticed any problems so far except one puppy with a hard nodule at the injection site… This nodule has concerned me, but for now the owner’s are content with their veterinarian’s recommendation.... I did not implant the microchip, so have little insight on whether a problem exists or if it is due to incorrect placemen, tissue scaring, ect...…..

I have always given full doses and have just recently been hearing about people giving half doses. My vet gives half doses on the rabies shot and that is fine with me because I am not concerned with my dog getting that. I guess I will continue to do full doses of distemper and parvo until I find out more about the half dose suggestion.

As far as the mircochipping, it is still fairly new. What I had read the problems starts showing up 18 months or longer after the microchip is implanted. I think I will just pass on the microchip.

Puppies given Lepto shots can die from it and it will look like liver shunt. unless an autopsy is performed there is no way to know. i know someone who was told and signed a contract not to give a puppy a lepto shot, well someohow she did and the puppy was dead a few days later. they thought it had liver shunt but I am not sure.

I find this interesting. How can we then know the accuracy of the liver shunt statistics commonly mentioned? This comment and some other articles I have read make me wonder if some of the cases of 'mild liver shunt' are not actually reactions to vaccines. No one is going to be performing many autopsies on mild/moderate cases (bc they often live long lives anyway, particularly with diet modifications) so we really have no way of knowing if it is actually liver shunt or something else.

As far as a de-worming protocol in puppies goes, I start mine at 6 weeks and every 2 weeks after that until 3 months old. Most things you read and many labels advise starting at 3 weeks, then weekly until 6 weeks, then every 2 weeks after that. The protocol I use has always resulted in a clear fecal. Even if a dam doesn't show worms, they can be present in the walls of her intestines and become active due to higher metabolism while pregnant so I worm the dam at 45 days in her pregnancy. I use Nemex 2 on both the dam and her pups and worm her when I worm the pups as long as they're nursing. :aimeeyork :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :)

No, I think she asked the vet to not give it but when her back was turned, it was given. not sure of all the details tho. The breeder was told it had LS and gave a full refund but after reading all this stuff today, i don't think so. who knows? If I had been the breeder, i would have voided the contract as soon as she said the lepto shot was given. i just mentioned the shot in my post because it can cause so many things and we will never truly know and I think someone above you mentioned lepto shots and Liver Shunt

If the vet I get did that I would seriously give him or her a piece of my mind. Who told the breeder it was liver shunt? How old was the puppy? How many days after the lepto shot was giving did the puppy die? I have read that it takes time for certain kinds of liver shunt to show up. Also I think that if there was or is solid proof that lepto causes liver shunt it would be taken out of the market or at least I hope so.

In my opinion I think your vet needs to study up on the newest recommendations on vaccinations. It is not recommended to get vaccinations that young. Just google 'danger canine vaccination' and start reading up. We are out in the country and there are very seldom any stray dogs around. I just don't hear about parvo in the area where we live. I have always been told that sick dogs get parvo and healthy dogs have a resistance to it. I try not to over vaccinate because that causes the dogs immune system to be compromised. I don't give heart worm preventative because my dogs stay in the house. I have never had any test positive for heart worms. I do use Advantage for fleas when necessary. I do not microchip.

I have read about interceptor are you happy with it? Your last sentence couldn't be more true.

Well they may of read up on it since our last litter of puppies was June 21, 07.
Our City does require the Rabies so I have to get it even tho I may not want to, I just don't want my babies taken away from me due to me not doing what our City says to do. I'll find out if they've done any updating on shots when I take ours in for their yearly.

We are out in the country and there are very seldom any stray dogs around. I just don't hear about parvo in the area where we live.


Last Summer when we had our litter of puppies,1 of my oldest daughters' friends stopped by last year even with our Parvo sign up and walked into our garage and back to her truck, just before she left she told me that her Mother-In-Laws' baby poodles had Parvo and they was at the Vets that day and not expecting them to make it, scared me to death even tho ours had their 2 set of shots & never went into our garage. I sprayed bleach every where she stepped all the way down our drive way and out to the road, needless to say my older girls thought I was batty but I don't care.

Our back yard has a privacy fence but out front yard has none yet and yes there are stray dogs here, if I catch any here in my yard I run them off and I've even have people walking their dogs and allow them to poo & pee in my yard, I go out and tell them I have Yorkies and I don't allow them to potty in other peoples' yard, don't let U're dogs potty in mine.

2 Summers ago I had a couple just stop every single day and let their big male dog (Don't know what kind it is) pee on my Rose Of Sharon bush at the corner of our yard (Teddy wanted to mark it every time he went outside so I was also fighting with him not to) needless to say we went around. They finally gave up and stopped. It really bothers me when others disrespect others by doing this, we take our Yorkies on walks but we have doggie bags and most of the time they do it on the sidewalk (& we pick it up) as I will not allow them in other peoples yards. We're hoping to get our front yard fenced in this year.

Can I ask how it comprosmises their immune system? I never knew this so I would like to learn more about it. I read how old U're babies are when U start U're shots, can I ask how old they are when U adopted them out to their forever homes or let them leave to go to their forever homes? And do they have all their shots before they leave? Do U ship U're babies?


We've never had any with heart worm either.

I do use Advantage for fleas when necessary.

We use to use Frontline Plus, but Hubby got something last summer to put on our yard and it killed our fleas and we never had any after he put it on our yard, (We don't allow our Yorkies in the yard for like 3 days after he applies it and he does it right before it rains so it will soak in) so now we just use this and I don't have to treat our Yorkies for fleas and we had them bad outside as we have sandy soil.

Yes I'm happy with it so far, we haven't seen anything bad with our Yorkies no reactions to it at all in any of our Yorkies, puppies or adults (Not saying they won't ever have a reaction to it.) and we've been using it for almost 3 years now only in the summer months and ours have never had a heart worm one, and this is what our Vet recomends here for us in our City/State (U need to ask U're Vet about what they think would be good for U're Yorkie for U to use) if U could only see what heart worm does to their hearts it's bad, our Vet has one in a jar in their office. It's nasty to see but a reality what mosquitoes can do to them. This is the ONLY reason I use Interceptor, not for the wormer in it, it's for the heart worm protection in it.

We start our puppies on it at age 8 weeks old and they must be at least 2lbs in weight. This what our Vet recomends. I wait about a week after their shots to start them on it.

Now keep in mind this is just us here for our Yorkies, others may not agree with us using this. If not can I ask why and what do U use to prevent heart worms in U're Yorkies due to mosquitoes? And why do U use this product? I'd also like to learn more on this too.

I did a search on Interceptor and found this site on it and it sounds pretty informative. And it does have it's pros and cons just like about anything else out there. I hope this may help U some. :)

I have always used Sentinnel on our adult yorkies. We haven't had any problems, but am wondering if anyone else has had trouble with this product. We have heartworm in our area and fleas can be anywhere in the grass. So I really like the double action of this once a month product. Anyone else using this product??

How do you figure microchipping is fairly new, my 10 year old yorkies are microchipped and were chipped when they were puppies, I do not consider 10 years as being fairly new. All my dogs are microchipped, except for the new puppies, that will be chipped as soon as they are big enough. I have never had any problems with microchipping, and I feel better knowing that if they disappear, the odds are favorable that I have a chance of them eventually being returned.
