If she doesn't seem in pain then there is nothing to worry about. Is she acting normal and eating/drinking? If so then just take a deep breath. It's probably nothing.

No problem with the tie, and we can't see any source for the blood. Trying to decide if we need to go to the emergency vet 30 minutes away.

I would wait a bit and see if it is less or quits before heading for an ER vet.
I think you're OK with waiting a bit to see what happens.
Of course if you feel shes bleeding, and it might be life threatening
Then you need to go on. But hopefully it will quit soon.

Katelin, if it will make you feel better, just call the EV and tell them what happened. Personally, I would wait before taking her in. I bet she's not bleeding as much as you think. Sometimes when we think something's wrong we see a lot more than there really is...trust me, I do the SAME thing. As long as she is not POURING blood I really don't think there's an issue. Is it the same or MORE blood than what happens during the first part of a heat with one of your girls? That will help you out. Think about the first 10 days of one of their cycles, and how much they bleed. Is she bleeding about the same as that, or more?

Whew! That was scary!

Honestly, it was like someone poured blood all over my carpet, and then it just wouldn't stop. We went through 8 or 10 paper towels soaked with blood.

Okay, I called my vet's office and left a message on the answering machine, even though there is no one there on Sunday. And my vet (bless his heart) called me back and asked some questions and then said:

If it is coagulating blood, it is some kind of tear up inside her.

If it isn't coagulating it is like all of you said, and is just blood from her heat cycle, and as bjh said we just "unstuck" her.

Put some counter pressure on it, sit with her for awhile and see if she continues to act normal. Check her gums to see if still pink. It is probably okay and will stop on its own.

OKAY -- so I feel so much better. AND I really really want to thank all of you. You were my first line of information -- and you were right. You can't beat that. Thanks again.

Katelin, I hope the little female is doing okay this morning. I can certainly understand why you would be concerned. I have had some bleed after breeding but not as much as you described.

Hello guys my name is Justine. This is my first day joining but I have been lurking here for quite some time. I have two little girls who are pregnant: Ginger and Mandee. Mandee is 7 and Ginger is 4. This is their first litter. I didn't mean for Mandee to get pregnant, I was trying to breed Ginger with Walter. But they tied before I could get Ginger bred! So now they are both due next week. They are really big, I don't know how many they are having! I just wanted to join in!

I'm not trying to be nosey with the questions I've ask below but we need some more information on your Yorkies before we (Any Breeders here on YT)
can give you any real advice.

Mandee is 7? is this 7 years old or is it 7 months old? How old is Walter? & Ginger is 4? Years?

Have you ever whelped a litter of Yorkies before?

Have they seen the Vet at all?

Has either of your female yorkies had an ultrasound or X-Ray?

When did they each of your Females tie with your Male? Did you think to write it down or do you remember?

Do you have any idea when they are due?

How much do each of your Yorkies weigh? Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. Hugs Lee

Thanks, she is doing well this a.m. Her mom, Kimberlee S, has just joined on line at YT and sent a message this morning that Marilyn is doing well. Yup, that was pretty exciting for awhile last night.

My only question at this time is whether we bred her too soon. She was on day 10-13 yesterday, and we had already had two short ties last week. I've always relied primarily on the dogs themselves to decide when it is time, although I keep track of the cycle days too. Maybe Jersey was just jumping the gun. And if so, shouldn't we breed her again to make sure she was ovulating and we get puppies? I've never had a breeding that didn't result in puppies before.... hmmmm. What do you think?

Both of your gals are a bit old for their first litter so I'd keep an extra close watch on them. Have they been to the vets to get a good check up? The 7 year old is like a 50 year old in human years so she may need special TLC. Sounds like you will definitely have your hands full. Is this your first whelping and do you have someone around to help you? You'll need an assistant as you'll be in poo hell when the pups are 7 weeks old. Those little buggers can run a person into the ground trying to keep the pen clean! Load up on the vitamins, your going to be a busy woman. You'll get support her but see if you can find a local mentor and make sure your bet takes emergency calls.

You may have bred her a little early...but my advice is to NOT breed her again...you don't want to chance that the puppies will be spaced apart too much...or else you could have 50 day old puppies born on the same day as 60 day old pups. Make sense? It could be a sad litter...

Sorry Nicki but this is incorrect. Puppies are born 63 days after ovulation which is on average on day 10 of her heat. When the eggs are mature (usually 2 - 3 days after ovulation) they are fertilized. They can't be fertilized ten days apart as they are only viable for about 2 days after they mature. If there is sperm from two dogs present at maturation they can become pregnant by two different studs but all pups would be due at the same time. Small or undeveloped pups at birth are usually the result of poor placement in the uterine horn causing lack of resources. My info is from Canine Reproduction and Whelping, A Breeder's Guide by Myra Savant Harris and is an excellent resource.
I wouldn't breed her anymore after she bled just to be on the safe side, 2 - 3 ties are usually sufficient if the timing is correct.

Hmm interesting. My mentor had pups that were underdeveloped in the same litter as some that were fully developed. I wonder if it was in fact because of poor placement. Never knew that...thanks for the info.
