Question for breeders. has anyone had experience with puppies being born with intestines outside and the vet put them back in? Did the puppy live or die within a few days? |
I have heard of it happening from several different people but the puppies did not live. |
I just found this interesting article on the internet: http://www.asiahomes.com/singaporepe..._Singapore.htm |
Did this happen to one of your pups??? I've heard of it but never had first hand experience. |
I've never heard of it with dogs, but, my 2nd cousins little boy was born with his intestines on the outside, and he's 30 some years old now.. |

I have heard other people talk about this happening to their puppies, but I have never heard of one living through it. Can they do surgery on a newborn yorkie? Their veins are too small for an IV..... |
i've seen this before. Some have died and some have lived. Some times the mom gets to the puppy before the owner does and mom eats some of the intestine, those pups usually die shortly after. |
Mom didn't hurt them in anyway. vet delivered him. The vet said they were fine. he put them in place and it only took two sticthes to sew it up. he said the boy would be fine and he is the largest one but i don't think he is pooping. he was gasping earlier today and I swung him, suctioned him and rubbed him. he is okay noww but i wonder if it is just a matter of time. Thanks everyone. |
Oh no...I'm sorry to hear about the little guy. Sending prayers that he will survive this. :hands: |
try looking up gastroschisis. This is what it is called when it happens to a skin baby. They are usually delivered by c-section and taken directly into their own surgery for repair. |

Awww Dee I will be praying he is fine!! |
I know of a breeder who had this happen on one of her puppies and he died shortly after birth.. I'm wishing the best for your little boy! |
Thanks guys. He doesn't seem any different from the others at this point but he is distended. BTW, we had three girls and two boys. I will post pictures in the nursery when things wind down and I figure out where we are here. |
aww congrats on the puppies:) sorry about that boy. my friends niece just had a baby (human) with that and it took him 2 months of being in the hosptial before things were working the way they should. first he wasnt eating then not pooping. he just got out of the hospital tuesday. so i know for humans it can be a long hard road. |
So sorry to hear about this one. Asking about being PTS, is what I would've done also. Especially if it may be just a matter of time. I'm surprised thhe vet was taken aback. Looks like he'd understand not wanting needless suffering. I have no experience with this. It sounds like "a freak accident" something that just happens if you know what I mean. My prayers are with your baby. |
Dee, Congratulations on the new babies. I'm praying for your little guy. Sheila |
oooo, I'm so sorry to hear the little guy is having a hard time. Hope he pulls thru. And congrats on the rest of your healthy babies. :p |
problem It can happen...but fortunately it is a seldom occurance. Just about every long time breeder I have ever known has had a pup or two with this condition at birth....I have never heard of any live..infact the vets I know won't do anything but put them down to save a slower painful death fromi nfection...it is all but impossible to place intestines back into the cavity 100% bacteria free..so they should be on an antibotic if it is tried.....but this situtation could be very different. |
I hope he will be okay :( |
I am sorry your little boy is having this problem. I will say a prayer for him. I am glad mom and the other babies are doing well. |
I am losing him. I have fought for his life all day, trying to potty him and keep him warm and just a few minutes ago, he started gasping again. I warmed him up and rubbed him enough to stop his gaping. I put him back with his mama who is holding him right between her front paws. it will just be a matter of minutes. he was all but gone this last time and very cold. She had never pushed him away so i will let her hold him. Actually, I think he is already gone. i just don't have the heart to take him from her right now. I am so heartbroken. I have done everything in my power but surely, there must have been something else. That's why I posted here. Well, Thanks |

I have seen a few here on YT that were born with their intestines on the outside, they lived a few days, one even lived a week or two but they never made it. Hugs to you, momma and the babies!! |
so sorry to hear about your little guy. I think thats the hardest part of breeding, when they haven\'t even had a start at life. Congrats on your other babies. |
