First off...I am sorry you are going through this.

I believe she is beyond the point of being easily palpated. $400 for a pregnancy ultrasound is beyond ridiculous. Find someone in your area who works in theriogenology, they can do the ultrasound for less and if she is pregnant they will be able to estimate about how far along she is, number of fetuses and viablility.

But Deana is very right, if you male has a medical condition that has any chance of being passed on you really have to think about what could happen to these babies. Sometimes we have the chance to stop suffering before it begins, and I am not looking to start an ethical debate about spaying a pregant female, just saying sometimes it is the lesser of the two evils.

She is a good size for a yorkie which is good, but I will say from our experience you are still looking at a good chance of a c-section, and a c-section will be a lot more than $400. Just something to think about.

We must have been replying at the same time. I hope everything works out and...best case scenario she is not pregnant. My Venus was in heat about a month ago...she was not bred as she had a litter her last heat...but she is still swollen, nipples are too and she has a bit of a pudge! LOL And no she has not been near a boy in months..lol.

I hadn't realized that Harley had health problems. I know it must be impossibly hard, Aerrica, but I think the best thing to do would be to have her spayed. It is better, IMO, to have it done now...instead of risking her having puppies with a lifetime of health problems.

It could very well be a false pregnancy. Anytime a female comes in heat, even if they are not bred, they often display the same signs as if they were pregnant. I have had them get somewhat swollen bellies and enlarged nipples and even milk and not be pregnant. Do you know how long she had been in heat when the incident occurred? After the incident occurred how much longer did you keep them separated and did your male seem interested in her? If possible you need to try and pinpoint the date of the incident so you will have a better idea of when she is due if she is indeed pregnant. I just hope that she is not pregnant but I do understand that accidents happen.

Harley has siezures - sometimes pretty bad and scary. Luckily he hasn't had to go on medication for them yet, but I am far to scared to put him under and risk losing him. He is a very special man who saved my life once so there is no way I could chance anything happening to him.

I bought him about 8 years ago from a BYB/puppymill. At the time I thought I was doing a good thing by saving him. It was before I understood how they worked and before I learned that by saving him I helped support and finance the way for even more puppies to be born into that situation.

I KNOW it was AFTER January 15th when they got together. Maybe even closer to the 20th. I want to say she'd been heat 2 maybe even closer to 3 weeks at that time. I normally write everything down in my journal every day, but like I said that was also around the time I started getting really sick and there are days and even a couple of weeks where Ididn't write anything.

good post.. I guess it depends on the medical reasons for not having him altered.. I would hope her vet would give her the right advice on this also.

I'm sorry, I know you've had a lot on your plate lately and here's another heaping. :( I don't have insight on this subject but please PM me if there is anything that I can do.

I am going to go to bed and try and get some sleep. I'm calling the vet as soon as he opens in the morning and will let ya'll know what he says.

I think talking to your vet and getting his opinion is the best option, which is what it sounds like you're going to do.

I'm having my girls fixed this month... my crested was in heat 4 weeks ago and her hoo hoo is still swolen, and ONE teat is swollen. Hormones do NOT agree with her! I am taking her into the vet today to have the boob looked at... I think its infected?? Gone sour? I don't know! But I do know this!

She is my baby, and I am NOT risking her health to breeding. If she was bred I would still be having her fixed, the uterus would still be removed with embryos inside. I DO not want to risk her developing a uterine infection after birth that could easily kill her, or a mammary gland infection where she could lose a breast, or any other god awful condition that all of the experienced breeders can tell you about! Just going through a normal heat cycle produces a surge of hormones that screw with their bodies enough to cause cysts and cancer. I'm so fixing her!


(And this is not meant towards you just my reasoning for fixing my babies)

Add that to the fact that we have enough homeless animals and mixed breeds roaming the planet... its just senseless to bring more into the world....


Oh and when it comes to yours... Picture the head of a chi (depending on the type of chi) compared to the head of a yorkie... and your male is pretty close in size to your female... how big were your males parents? and grandparents??? I would really worry about your female passing those puppies!!! You would NEVER forgive yourself if you lost her in whelping. Its totally your choice.. but there is SO much to think about.
