Please, please don't yell at me God I'm almost scared to post this, but I'm so worried about Poopanut. *deep breath* Ok, S'anah was scheduled to be fixed in January. Well, she went to heat about a week or so before her appointment so we weren't able to. I have a male chihuahua named Harley, who, do to a medical condition can not be fixed (too dangerous and scary to put him under). So, while Susanah was in heat I kept Harley in my bedroom and Susanah stayed with me in the rest of the house. Then at night I switched them so S'anah could sleep with me and Harley slept with my son. I kept doing this from the time S'anah first started getting swollen until just a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to make absolute 100% sure she was not in heat before I let them around each other again. Well, around the 3rd week of January (maybe even the 4th - its hard to remember because this is also around the time I started getting really sick) Mike, myself, and the kids were all gone for a couple of hours and when we came back my bedroom door was open and I was greeted by both Harley and Susanah in the living room. Naturally I panicked and scooped Susanah up and gave her little hoo hoo one thorough examination. (you have never seen anyone look at a hoo hoo so closely) It did not appear at all that Harley had gotten her. What has me worried is that since her heat, her little hoo hoo is still swollen (it has gone down some, but is still pretty large) and her nipples are large too. I KNOW these are signs of pregnancy. Its hard to tell if her tummy is any bigger, as she is slightly chubby anyway. Are there any other ways to tell? I don't think she would be far enough long to tell on an x ray would she? And there is just no way I can squeeze $400 for an ultrasound and the vets around here don't believe in payment plans. God, this can not be happening to me and the Poopanut. I swear I kept them apart except for those few hours and I can not for the life of me figure out how the door got opened and she got out. I promise she is getting spayed ASAP. Its just that I have been really sick so the plan was to get me well then get her spayed before next her heat. I am so sorry ya'll. I feel like such an ass. I honesty did my best to keep them apart. |
Im not a yeller lol..sounds like she has the classic signs but time will surely tell..what about measuring her belly and remeasuring every week? Would you consider have the babies aborted if she was prenant..Im not a fan of that idea but others are..if not..its not the end of the world right?? She will have cute little chorkies haha.. Dawn |
I'm sorry Aerrica. I don't know squat about what you should do...or what anyone will say to you. But I know that its not your fault. I've been known to be upset sometimes when this happens...but that's when people don't give a crap and think "Well, it'll get me a quick buck!" and I know that's not how you are at all. I just wanted to say good luck! Do you think, if Susanah is preggo, that she is a healthy weight and size to deliver? |
ok now dont yell at me but.................. chorkies are beautiful and if both mom and dad are akc you can register your new soon to be chorkies... then get ger fixed immediately:) good luck |

If it were me, I would have her spayed immediately. If she's not pregnant, then she'll already get that taken care of....if she is pregnant, that will stop an unwanted litter and keep her safe and healthy. I think she's pretty tiny and young correct? I know how much you love her and don't want anything to happen nto her...giving birth is a HUGE risk. I promise I'm not yelling...just letting you know if she were my dog and I was at all concerned, she'd be spayed immediately. |

S'anah is about 6.5 - 7 lbs - maybe a little more, she is a chunky monkey. Harley is about 5.5 - 6 lbs. As far as having them aborted, I don't think I could do that UNLESS S'anah was in danger. I went searching on here and found something about false pregnancies. Do ya'll think maybe that could be it? We were only gone for around 2 hours, 3 at the most. I have no idea how long she was out of the bedroom. Her hoo hoo didn't appear at all like he had gotten her. I am not exaggerating when I tell ya'll I looked it with a magnifying glass. Thanks for not yelling at me. I know it isn't the end of the world - as long as S'anah is Ok. I love her so much it WOULD be the end of the world if anything happened to her though. I just don't think I could go on without my Poopanut. She is my world. |

You wrote: I have a male chihuahua named Harley, who, do to a medical condition can not be fixed (too dangerous and scary to put him under). From what you wrote about your male chihuahua. I think your first and biggest concern is your male cannot be neutered due to health issues etc as you stated. Then what do you expect the pups will be like healthwise? This would be a reason to abort the litter if she is pregnant. You wouldn't want to bring a litter of unhealthy pups into the world. Not yelling just giving you something to think about Deana Prestigeous Yorkies |

Many dogs have puppies and are fine, but I promise you that there are real risks. Dogs DO die giving birth. I've heard many stories of dogs developing infections afterwards or getting enclampsia. There was a story on here recently where the mom developed enclampsia so quickly that she died on the way to the vet. There are many many things that CAN go wrong. So while she might do perfectly fine, there's always that chance that something can go terribly wrong. My advice is to have her spayed ASAP. |
My boykin spaneiel had a false pregnancy a few years ago..only we knew she wasnt pregnant..but Im not kidding she had a whole false pregnancy..she got soooooooo big, milk and all..I even called the vet because I was sure she had to be pregnant even though I was 100% sure she couldnt be..it was THAT realistic..thats when I was explained to about Phantom Pregnancies..which can also be dangerous if they happen too often..its interesting to read about..do a google search.. I hope your vet will work with you |
No I absolutely wouldn't want to bring puppies into the world that could be sick. I just can't believe this is happening to me and my Poopanut. :( |
I'm going to call in the morning. I hope he'll work something out too. Why do these things always happen right when money is the tightest? What upsets me even more is that I HAD money set aside for emergencies for the furbutts, but I had to dip into it to pay for some of MY medical stuff. :( |
First off...I am sorry you are going through this. I believe she is beyond the point of being easily palpated. $400 for a pregnancy ultrasound is beyond ridiculous. Find someone in your area who works in theriogenology, they can do the ultrasound for less and if she is pregnant they will be able to estimate about how far along she is, number of fetuses and viablility. But Deana is very right, if you male has a medical condition that has any chance of being passed on you really have to think about what could happen to these babies. Sometimes we have the chance to stop suffering before it begins, and I am not looking to start an ethical debate about spaying a pregant female, just saying sometimes it is the lesser of the two evils. She is a good size for a yorkie which is good, but I will say from our experience you are still looking at a good chance of a c-section, and a c-section will be a lot more than $400. Just something to think about. |
We must have been replying at the same time. I hope everything works out and...best case scenario she is not pregnant. My Venus was in heat about a month ago...she was not bred as she had a litter her last heat...but she is still swollen, nipples are too and she has a bit of a pudge! LOL And no she has not been near a boy in months..lol. |
I hadn't realized that Harley had health problems. I know it must be impossibly hard, Aerrica, but I think the best thing to do would be to have her spayed. It is better, IMO, to have it done now...instead of risking her having puppies with a lifetime of health problems. |
Let us know what your vet says in the morning. I hope he'll work with you on payment |
It could very well be a false pregnancy. Anytime a female comes in heat, even if they are not bred, they often display the same signs as if they were pregnant. I have had them get somewhat swollen bellies and enlarged nipples and even milk and not be pregnant. Do you know how long she had been in heat when the incident occurred? After the incident occurred how much longer did you keep them separated and did your male seem interested in her? If possible you need to try and pinpoint the date of the incident so you will have a better idea of when she is due if she is indeed pregnant. I just hope that she is not pregnant but I do understand that accidents happen. |
Harley has siezures - sometimes pretty bad and scary. Luckily he hasn't had to go on medication for them yet, but I am far to scared to put him under and risk losing him. He is a very special man who saved my life once so there is no way I could chance anything happening to him. I bought him about 8 years ago from a BYB/puppymill. At the time I thought I was doing a good thing by saving him. It was before I understood how they worked and before I learned that by saving him I helped support and finance the way for even more puppies to be born into that situation. |

I'm sorry, I know you've had a lot on your plate lately and here's another heaping. :( I don't have insight on this subject but please PM me if there is anything that I can do. |
I am going to go to bed and try and get some sleep. I'm calling the vet as soon as he opens in the morning and will let ya'll know what he says. Thank you everyone for being understanding, no yelling at me, and for all of the good advice. |
Why in the world would anyone yell at you? I think talking to your vet and getting his opinion is the best option, which is what it sounds like you're going to do. I wish you the best of luck sweetie. Remember, these are your dogs and you take good care of them. You should not worry about what other people think. |
I have no personal experience or advice to offer, I Just want to let you know I'm thinking about you and hoping all turns out for the best... Warm regards, |
I'm having my girls fixed this month... my crested was in heat 4 weeks ago and her hoo hoo is still swolen, and ONE teat is swollen. Hormones do NOT agree with her! I am taking her into the vet today to have the boob looked at... I think its infected?? Gone sour? I don't know! But I do know this! She is my baby, and I am NOT risking her health to breeding. If she was bred I would still be having her fixed, the uterus would still be removed with embryos inside. I DO not want to risk her developing a uterine infection after birth that could easily kill her, or a mammary gland infection where she could lose a breast, or any other god awful condition that all of the experienced breeders can tell you about! Just going through a normal heat cycle produces a surge of hormones that screw with their bodies enough to cause cysts and cancer. I'm so fixing her! (And this is not meant towards you just my reasoning for fixing my babies) Add that to the fact that we have enough homeless animals and mixed breeds roaming the planet... its just senseless to bring more into the world.... Oh and when it comes to yours... Picture the head of a chi (depending on the type of chi) compared to the head of a yorkie... and your male is pretty close in size to your female... how big were your males parents? and grandparents??? I would really worry about your female passing those puppies!!! You would NEVER forgive yourself if you lost her in whelping. Its totally your choice.. but there is SO much to think about. Whatever you chose, you know you'll have your YT family every step of the way! |
oh I'm sorry you're going thru this, I just hope it's a false pregnancy. Otherwise I would see what the vet recommends in your case. Keep us updated. |
