I am not one for abortions by all means... Just health wise would be the only logical reason for it. Having said this I only spoke of it because my mother who bred Rotties had a female that had an abortion, it wasn't my mothers choice she shared ownership of that particular female and the other owner decided she didnt want the female to have a litter of pups because it wouldnt benefit her at all. Well that lady also was a vet tech and when my mom was out of town and had her so called friend the other owner watch her dogs she came in w/ her vet and did an abortion. Winnie was never the same. She became aggressive with us and my mother, practically killed our male and ate literally ate through her layers of stitches. Did she have that cone head contraption to prevent that yes but she tore it off.. We ended up putting her down because she was mentally unstable because of the psychological screw up it caused her.. So please do not think I am for abortion at all. I was thinking health wise if a c-section wasnt an option and the pelvis wasnt mature.. I hope no one thinks i am for abortions because i stated it previously because i'm not what so ever.. |
What a kind, helpful thread! I agree with everyone (well, almost everyone)--it sounds like you did the best you could, and no need to beat yourself up. We will just hope for the best, and as someone pointed out, this happens all the time in the wild. It's not ideal for our babies, but not unlikely that it will all turn out ok! |

That was a pretty underhanded thing to give the dog an abortion without the consent of both owners. Poor dog, for what it had to go through. |
Everyone is correct. It has been a very kind and helpful thread. I was really worried that in posting I would get some angry responses, but everybody has been very understanding and I greatly appreciate it. I will keep you posted on her progress and I still hope that it is a false pregnancy. Some one on another forum had two females that must have been in heat about the same time. Only one was bred, but the other one went through the whole thing just like she was pregnant, too. Even nesting near the end. I couldn't help wondering how traumatic it was for her to go through that and end up with no babies. Especially when her sister did have babies. |
good luck if your girl is prego.. keep us informed.. I too would be intereted in knowing how you made out... again hope all goes well if she is.... |
I have a female who I have a hard time telling if she is coming in or in heat till she is in standing heat,I have never seen blood on her or the licking or swollen vulva. Actually she is in heat right now and I did not know till the other day and she is already in standing heat. I do not have any other females like her,the rest always bleed ,lick themselves alot, real swollen vulva and behavior changes etc.... It is hard to keep males away from females but can be done!! Seperate rooms and gates all over.It is better if they cannot even see them through the cycle (or smell). It is alot of crying and whining but well worth it when you do not want someone bred. By 45- 50 days you should be able to feel pups and mamary will be filling up. To bad she is still a pup though and might be a mommy. Let us know what your vet says. |

You haven't heard from me in awhile because I am having a crisis right now with another one of my Yorkies, Lucy. She is in emergency surgery as I write for damage to her spine. She may not make it. In regards to Ciara, since she and my other Yorkies are being boarded by my vet while I am out of town with Lucy, I had the vet check her. The vet did an ultrasound and Ciara is definitely pregnant. There are at least three babies. She is between 30 days and 45 days. That's as close as they could determine. Got to go for now as I am awaiting a call from the surgeon as to the outcome of Lucy's surgery. |
OMG I am so sorry to hear about Lucy. I will be praying for her. |

I'm so sorry to hear about Lucy. I would probably allow your pup to have the puppies now since she is so far along but a spay after the tie would have been my first choice. |
