Do you breeders really make no money at all from breeding??

ANd just like you said, it's a hobby. When you have a hobby you pay for it slowly. If you are into golf you pay for you items and membership monthly. you pay for different items when showing at different times... some this month some the next. This month you bought the hair products and kennel, the next you buy this or that. I get that.

So, (I'm about to irk a few people..lol), why are some show breeders mad when people who don't show are breeding? I mean You follow a standard, Why can't they follow their own standard? At the end You are breeding for a healthy, beautiful dog that is wanted. So why get mad at them when they are doing the same thing but not to that standard but to their own? I remember when I made a thread about why yorkies was created and I remember everyone saying that now it's only to show their health, beauty, temp, etc. But Other breeders that don't show are being put down for foing the same thing you're doing but following their own standards..... LOL

A breed standard is not written by a person but by many people over time with the welfare and continuation of the breed in mind. All breeds were developed for a purpose. They are shaped the way that they are and have the temperments that they do for a reason. The standard is to maintain what makes that breed special. If everyone just started breeding what they liked we'd just have a bunch of cute mutts running around. There is nothing wrong with mutts but the nice thing about a pure bred dog is the standard tells you what you can expect. If you go an dlook at a Parson Russel puppy they may all look the same at 6 weeks old, at least to the uneducated eye. The standard will let you know what that dog should look like when it is grown, what it's temperment should be like, what the requirements ( space, exercise, attention, etc.) should be. If you know these things you will be able to determine whether or not a Parson Russel is the dog for you. The original founders of the yorkshire terrier worked hard to develop a dog that would be glamorous yet fiesty, a faithful companion but ready to go to ground for the hunt. I and many breeders like me choose to honor their work by taking our dogs into the ring and having at least 3 judges who have worked hard to be able to offer an educated opinon judge their worthiness as breeding stock. It is to insure that yorkies continue to look like yorkies, that they act like yorkies, that they are strong and true. I don't want all of the dogs to end up looking the same. I value the opinion of someone who knows more than I do and I'm willing to work hard and pay for it. Who am I to set my own standard? What do I know about the perfect physique or balance for optimum movement and health? People will do what they want, they always have but if you truly love the Yorkshire Terrier breed then you want to do what is best to insure that it will still be around, intact, 100 years from now.

I wouldn't be mad if someone is trying to create a new breed and created a standard to follow and it was a new breed of dog, but you can only have one textbook definition of a Yorkie and it already exists. If you want a Yorkie or to breed Yorkies, then aim for dogs that meet the definition, not something one person made up.
To me sounds like an easy way to get buy breeding non-quality dogs. Kind of like if your dogs aren't great specimens, just make up something that benefits you as an individual and call it your own, new personal standard.

How did this thread take this turn anyway? LOL...I thought this was about the costs of breeding?

Nice thread. I always wondered why people bred their dogs if not to sell. Why would you breed a dog if you weren't trying to make money. WHY? I only have 1 yorkie. I have no intention of ever breeding. If I was gonna show, which I'm not, then maybe I would make sure he was the best. But I don't think people are gonna breed just to have a house full of yorkies. Unless you're a super nice person and want to share your love for them. I love my little one. And I don't know what a back yard breeder is. But I meet the person I got my pup from. Great people. I got him for 450.00. Meet his mother and father. Got all the papers. Went out to the backyard to get him. LOL. So what is the reason for breeding if not trying to make big money???. WHY???. I know you want to keep the breed alive, But pretty soon you're not gonna be able to give them away. Yeah I remember those good old days when a puppy was just given to a good home. Well color me stupid if i'm wrong.

But that's just it....if it was a different description of what a yorkie is, then it's not a Yorkie. You can't change something about a breed and have it still be the same breed.

The YTCA would never allow that another type of yorkshire terrier. I guess anyone can make up their own club or registry but it won't be worth anything. The YTCA is THE parent club of the Yorkshire Terrier - they write the standard that the AKC uses. There is and will only be ONE kind of Yorkshire Terrier, at least only one that is allowed to show anyway. Why would anyone try to create a new yorkie?

For the same reason people do anything else that they enjoy that requires money. They enjoy it. Is there nothing you do just because you enjoy doing it?

OK... It could have been created from 5000 people and still... why can't someone create their own standard or breed and not be put down as doing wrong? I have seen some one who's trying to create her own breed and if you didn't ask her you wouldn't know, you would have thought she was just mixing breeds. I'm pretty sure everyone would start to criticize and say that what she was doing is wrong even though they didn't ask question and ask her goals....

and if you can set your own standard then you are someone who knows how to get out there and get know for people to buy your dogs and see what you breed? Rules/Guides are not followed all the time, maybe your knew guidelines could create a new rule/standard over time with it getting know.

Well...I have to say that I think you are wrong. You'll always have bad breeders only breeding to make money. Reputable breeders breed because they love this breed. I guess I'll try to describe how I feel (even though I don't breed)....I am so in love with the Yorkshire Terrier breed - the way a well-bred yorkie looks, the way they act, that long silky coat, everything that makes a Yorkshire Terrier what it is. These are just amazing little dogs...there is just something so special about them. Those that show and breed are in love with this breed too. They show to prove they have excellent examples of the breed. They breed to improve the breed and to breed the best examples possible. Most breed to get that next show quality puppy. They strive to breed healthy, quality puppies for the show ring and to be placed into pet homes. They want to preserve this wonderful breed. I bet making money is the furthest thing from reputable show breeders' minds....they spend a lot more money than they make. It's about a passion and love for the breed - NOT making money

A few weeks ago I was talking to this breeder about how she sales micros and she actual said that a 19year old doesn't know anything. I am be young but I can see and understand a lot more that is blind to others.

People CAN create their own breed...and it becomes just that...another BREED. But that breed has to extend beyond what just one person is doing. Otherwise, they are just calling it a new breed to justify breeding non-standard dogs or crosses. People who are trying to create a new breed, who work together to set a new standard for these new dogs, who study the long term effects, get quite a bit of credit and praise.

Because, the standard defines the breed! If you aren't breeding to the standard, you aren't truly breeding a Yorkshire Terrier....if you continue breeding out-of-standard dogs, you eventually get a yorkie that doesn't even resemble a Yorkshire Terrier. Therefor, you aren't breeding a Yorkie anymore.

If someone is truly setting out to create a new breed and doing it the right way, more power to them. But you can't take a yorkie and change a couple things about it and still call it a yorkie.

And that person was very wrong for saying that to you. But still, I can't help but think that maybe on some level you have a grudge against some 'group' as you defined it and alot of this is more aimed at them and less general converstion.

(Not that there is anything wrong with that...if you disagree with someone, you disagree. )
