Stud Question.... In considering a stud for breeding... I'm curious to know what is "preferred" as far as size in relation to the female. I currently have a 2 lb male who I plan to use, but in looking at another little guy, I'm wondering if his 4 lb size would be acceptable for a 4 lb and up female. My preference has always been of a male at least 2 lbs smaller than the female being bred... but is it common to see other "variations" as well? For example only.... if you have a 6 lb stud and a 5 lb female... or a 4 lb stud with a 4 lb female... or even a 7 lb stud with a 4 lb female..... aside from the obvious size and "ability to mount" issues, (where an AI could easily be performed) - what are the other considerations? A 6 lb male who comes from 3 lb lines - wouldn't necessarily throw larger pups, simply because he is larger..... so what do you think? (does this make any sense?) |
LOL I havent a clue, Just wishing you luck with your breeding program:) your babies are all so beautiful:) |
I avoid breeding the tiny ones. I say 4 or 5 lb male and 5 to 7 lb females is ideal. If I were you I would try to get a nice sound male around 4 to 5 lbs. |
Arent all of the females you are getting around 3 to 4 lbs? If that is so, then you are looking for a heartache if you are planning to breed them. A 6 lb stud that comes from tiny lines will more than likely produce large puppies. And a tiny stud is not guaranteed to produce tiny puppies either. I am sure you have read alot of the breeding posts here and almost all responsible breeders will not breed a tiny bitch. I hope you will re-think the thought of breeding those tiny girls, that is, if they are tiny. |

things are clearer with this question! Well, I guess now I know why Gracie hasn't been spayed yet  , apparently money wasn't really the issue there. Good luck with the breeding program. I'm not against breeders at all, just against dishonesty. I don't doubt she is loved, don't get me wrong, just had different hopes for her future home. Totally my bad. Buyer beware for these puppies that the soon-to-be breeder is a tad less than honest!:thumbdown I should have listened to my daughter and just kept the dog! That's all I'm gonna say!!!!!!!! |

Gracie's first mom made it very clear in her original post that Gracie was not to be used for breeding. She had real concerns about her safety: She is WAY too small to breed so will be a PET only....her mom was a rather big yorkie, and though I have never bred or know a whole lot about it...if someone thought to do it she carries genes to throw babies much bigger than her, so mix that with a dad who maybe had big parents and it could be tragic, or so it would seem. She is SO dainty and fragile it hurts me to just think about it, I will be as careful as I possibly can with this, thank you for the replies! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98433 |
Dena is obviously well versed on breeding. IF the dog I sold her was originally going to be used for breeding, which I was told she was NOT, I would not have ever given a second thought to selling her to her. What I say or what kind of permission I give doesn't matter at this point, it's not my dog, I gave up that right. I don't agree I GAVE Dena permission to breed and said "oh you have my blessing", there's plenty of good Yorkie breeders out there. I think I just said that I wouldn't mind it since she got so much bigger than I had thought she would so at least she would be "safer" in terms of the birthing process since most of you know the dangers in breeding yorkies so small. I have a feeling that whatever I say will be debated here and I'm not looking for a fight. I worked in animal rescue for over 4 years and have an ill taste in my mouth for people who collect animals of this great amount and breed and collect in the paypal account. When I talked to Dena regarding this possible breeding of Gracie, I was under the impression it was more of a "hobby" type of breeding and not mass production which it *looks* like it will be. I think it's getting confusing here, I am not against breeding entirely, I think good breeders who help keep good lines going and truly care for their pups are great. Maybe that will be Dena, I hope she ends up being one of the good ones. Ever since I sold Gracie over an AIRPLANE, which I saw red flags from the beginning but ignored them, I have felt uneasy about her future, only being able to base her updates on this forum, never really knowing what happens beyond the keyboard. I have had many nice emails with Dena and she made me feel very good about my choice, but if I would have stuck to my original plans for her and not been so selfish because I was so fed up with her messing in my house all the time, I would have stuck it out and found her a home that I could visit first and approve in person. I have NO idea what Dena does besides dress up the dogs in pretty clothes and buy more dogs. I am against puppy mills and in my opinion someone who has...correct me if I'm wrong....over 14 dogs in a house and litters of puppies (puppyfind.com) is on their way to that status. I guess I just am mad at myself and just hope that if Gracie is bred she doesn't break! I would feel responsible. I kick myself for not spaying her first. so stupid of me. |
Hopefully Gracie will not be considered to be bred! I would hope you will respect the original owners wishes on this. Hopefully you will reconsider the whole plan of breeding alltogether. |
This is a little off the subject, but can maybe help anyone reading this why I am upset. I have a 3yr old little girl who adored that little puppy, she cried when she left. I figured since she was so young that she would forget, kind of out of sight out of mind, but she hasn't. Every day for the last few weeks she asks me why her dog is gone and wants me to get her back (we have another yorkie, but she liked that she could hold little Gracie and she would sit on her lap when she watched tv, our others dogs dont do that). She also asks me to not take back our other dogs, which I would NEVER do, but it kills me that she relates things to the puppy being gone.I don't think she will be traumatized for life, but it breaks my heart and any mom out there may be able to understand the remorse I feel for my decision. I was not prepared for the needs of a puppy and ran from the situation rather than make it work for my daughter. It's recently crossed my mind to find one that looks like Gracie but is more suited for our homes in terms of training, just because I feel so bad. So when I see the postings about Gracie being knocked up for what I consider to be selfish needs, as she is not an appropriately papered dog to enter into a *good* breeding program, it makes me mad. A this point I wish the dog was making my daughter happy instead. I am a very nice person, I am also easily persuaded and tend to bend where I shouldn't. I'll agree I didn't deny that Gracie could be bred, but Dena is a smooth talker and it's hard to say no when someone convinces you of how great they are and how much they LOVE the dog, so I just figured if she loves the dog so much I guess she can do whatever, who am I do decide? I am powerless at this point. |

Oh My :( I hope this is just a misunderstanding that can be easily resolved. You said in your other post that your vet said that tiny ones are okay to breed but please get the opinion of another vet before going forward. I know that you've bred other breeds before but Yorkies do present special challenges and not all vets are knowledgable in that area. I would also get the opinion of some of the other breeders on here and get their take on the situation. I know there is a lot more than just weight involved in deciding whether or not a female is too small and there are some really good threads on that in the breeder section. |
Wow...... all this in the few minutes I've been gone..... <<shaking head>> And SANDY!!! I am AMAZED at what you've written here.... this is QUITE THE TURNAROUND from the woman who just contacted me the other day in search of "a tiny" to bring home to "replace" Gracie.... Amazing...... then again, I should have expected it from the people here.... |
This is absolutely sickening  ..just when I thought it couldn't get any worse..WOW! The audacity some people exhibit.. :thumbdown  |
Just A Suggestion As I Have Always Tried To Be A Peacemaker I Know You Said You Sold Gracie Cause She Was Poohing In The House But You Also Said You Had Rather Have Her Because Of Your Daughter Maybe This Lady Would Consider Selling Back To You So There Will Not Be Any Conflicts And Her Name And Your Name Not Be Drug Through The Mud... I Dont Know It Just Saddens Me This Has Happened To Everyone Involved If It Were Me I Would Not Feel Comfortable Keeping The Dog As I Want What Is Best For The Dog.... I Would Want To Prove To You And Everyone Else My Worthyness And Send You The Dog Back So It Was Insured That I Did Not Breed The Dog... That Is Just Me Though... Im Good At Overexplaining Reassuring Ect... When All Else Fails Pray And Let Go And Let God |
Why is it, that EVERY time, I ask a SIMPLE question... EVERY thread I start gets attacked and turned into a RANT?? I asked a very general question..... that's it..... and now THIS??? |
This is just sad. I hope u reconsider breeding those babies. Those TINY babies do not deserve this:( |
Dena~ You said in another post that your roommate breeds these Havanese/Maltese mix puppies. You also said that you do all of the online listings for her because she doesn't know how. I see that your name is next to the phone number (in the contact info line)....does she also not know how to answer the phone?? As for your original question....I think that he is wayyyyyyyy too small and you should just go ahead and neuter him. :) Tammy |
Dont you even have it in your heart to sell Gracie back to the original owner? What is your reasoning for keeping her? That lady put her heart on her sleeve and all she want is for her daughter to have that girl back. |
Being So New To Yt What Happened To Natalie Kaye ? |

Oh, and I didn't ask whether I should neuter my male or not.... but thank you kindly for your opinion.... |

C'mon.... tell me what person is going to pay for a puppy - receive, bond with, care for and fall in love with that puppy... and then happily agree to give her back because the previous owner decided (out of the blue no less, because Sandy has NEVER said to me that she wanted Gracie back) that her lack of patience with the pup pottying all over her house, lack of time to spend training that puppy and lack of dedication to continue making the effort - is now overtaken by the guilt of her 3 year old saying "Mommy can Gracie come back?" I can't think of a single soul who'd say... "Oh sure, she'll be on the next plane... hope your little baby girl enjoys having her home!".... sorry... don't think so.... |
