I have 2 yorkies with grade 2 of LP unfortunately but both have been spayed and neutered. You really have to watch the pedigrees when you bring something into your breeding program

These tests are not inexpensive to do and the symptoms may not be noticable for years. These results are also reported to AKC with the owner of the dog and breeders name. A reputable breeder would want to do everything they could to ensure the soundness of their dogs, but some might not be so honest. These could be some of the reasons there is not more testing done in Yorkies. My girl still does not show symptoms and this is not unusual in small dogs as long as they do not get over weight. There is another new test, Penn Hip, that is suppose to be even more accurate than the OFA test.

I will start OFA'ing next year! I want my dogs sound and I want to know which ones aren't! I want to make sure those who adopt my dogs are in the know. That is why I've spayed and neutered a couple of mine to stop LP. I can't tell you if they were born with it or caused from injury but I'm going to assume injury because both are over 2 and only being a grade 2 could possibly be caused from injury since they do jump up and down off my furniture but again they are fixed so no worries there! That's my precaution to insure I don't have to worry about it in the future. Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers

It would be great if everyone was as responsible as you Donna, that would save a lot of heartache in the long run. At least people are becoming more aware of the problems in our breed and education is the first step toward healthy dogs.

Denise I wouldn't want it any other way It was hard to have Harvey neutered being my first home bred champion but in order to stop LP I had to do the responsible thing even though I think it was caused by injury but I'm not taking that chance. Being still considered new to showing and breeding I can't risk or take a chance of LP staying in the lines so they have been stopped plain and simple.
