Sire & Dam of litter have same Sire? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I was wondering is it weird for someone to breed two dogs that come from the same sire? If they share the same father, but different mother does that make it okay? |
I can't remember if this is called in-breeding or line breeding. Hopefully a more experienced breeder can help you with this question. |
It is inbreeding . I don't recommend this kind of breeding . Even if the mothers are different , the sire is the same . It can be very tricky . |
Olivier-do you know why it is tricky? I'm just wondering because I got the AKC registration numbers from my breeder today for the dog I have on hold. When I looked them up at the AKC website it shows both parents have the same father (which I wasn't sure about) Should I ask the breeder about this? |
You have to be careful about in-breeding because it can bring out the best qualities in a yorkie or the worst faults. There is a breeder here in town that's bred over 20 years and even she doesn't recommend it. You never know which way the cards will fall. Also, sometimes traits can come out that will leave you with a pup with a lifetime of health problems. I wouldn't recommend buying a pup that is inbred unless the breeder knows that nothing will be wrong with the pup and has done it before with success. |

pedigree The pups are half brother and half sister...not a wise breeding to do in Yorkies. AKC does not care how close the parents are and will issue papers no matter how close the breedings. Obvisously, the breeders feels it is okay, because they did it..but inbreeding is risky now..too much liver shunt, on and on.. You get the best genes in the line, BUT also the worst..and the worst can mean genetic problems now or later. |
Thanks for the info YorkieRose. My breeder did say the following in an email "I have been raising and breeding dogs for about 13 years now. Through selective careful breeding, I have succeeded very well in producing healthy, correct dogs with wonderful temperaments." I'm just worried that if I do ask the breeder about possible future health problems due to the inbreeding she will tell me not to worry about it. I also have a deposit down on the dog which I believe is non-refundable. I forgot to say the 2 pedigrees are the parents of the puppy I will be getting. I don't know if that makes a difference or not |

Hi, I have seen this happen at times and sometimes it produces the most beautiful. I do believe also it is good to check the history with the breeder. Would they give you permission to speak to there vet freely. Questions like has there been any birthing issues such as C-sections, leg problems, liver issues, or bits off, narrow hips things like that. I would only buy there if the history showed years of no problems with correct and sound offspring. Good Luck I wish you the best! ;o) P.S. I lost a deposit 3 days after i made it on a little male 600.00 I thought the dog i was purchasing was not to breed standard and the breeder got made at me so she keep my money. OH well, better to loose my cash than breed bad lines. :o) |
pup I don't care who you buy from...always ask to speak to the vet for a reference and a one year genetic health guarantee is quite standard now. I would back away from any breeder who refused either...for me it tells you what type breeder you are dealing with..as to inbreeding, I can not tell you if the pup will have health problems down the line or not..same with unrelated, but the chances are greater with inbred, that is common sense. AND...I HATE NON-REFUNDABLE Deposits..why do this to a buyer? You are forcing a person to take your puppy, makes no sense to me. If a person changes their mind for any reason, give back the money..Yorkies are in demand, no need to keep peoples money! |
I REALY AGREE non refundable is not EXCEPTABLE if the puppy has not been taken yet. Who's kidding who some breeders are getting alittle greedy i think! |
