Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | 4 week old pups...potty pads? Well, we are to the point this past week where I've actually seen Lexie's pups potty on their own.Congratulations puppies! Lexie still helps them out & cleans up after them, but they are on their way to potty independence. When I've had them out of their box, I've put them on a potty pad, and they have gone on it. Today, I had Candy out of the box, put her on the pad, she peed, then walked around for a little while, and a few minutes later was on the pad again....and pooped! I'm telling you, if I would have had my camera handy, I would have taken her picture . I was amazed and praised her lavishly ! My question(s) is this.....was that a fluke, a coincidence, a dream (LOL), or did she really go potty on there purposely? And if so...since they have not graduated to having free roam of an xpen yet, should I have a potty pad in their box? I know they have been potty-ing in there as I have had to change their bedding more often. Advice again from the more experianced breeders here is needed and welcome.

| My puppies are four weeks old now and have had their potty pads available for at least a week now. They seem to want to not soil their beds so the earlier you have it available the better it is - for us anyway that's how it always is for our pups! Congrates on your babies!

| Fluke or not, I would go with it! Put down a potty pad and they can start training with it. If they see Mom going on it, they will be inclined to do the same. Good luck!

If they are able to get out of the bed on their own I would cover the floor of the puppy pen with pads. Then as they get older slowly reduce the size of the padded area until there is a bed at one end and a pad at the other end of the pen. It worked great with my pups. If the box is big enough I would definitely give them someplace to potty besides the bed.

| Great, they are so smart. Mine leave here @ 12-14 wks knowing it's a good thing to use the pads.

| I usually line the whelping pen (puppy play pen with pee pads), which they use....However, after their first shots when I take them into the family room x-pen with mom....mom begins hearding them to the pee pad and does the training there.

Living My Yorkie Dream Donating Member | Well, I have since added a new box to their present box...the original one for them to sleep and play in and the new one as their potty area. We attached the two together cutting a doorway from one to the other. It's working out well so far...another question I have is....our floors are wood, I have those foam kids puzzle squares on it along with towels to raise up off the wood. My concern is....if/when I let the pups have run of the xpen, will that "floor" be too cool/cold for them for very long and/or will they know to find their way back to the box to warm up and sleep? Even at 4 weeks and being good sized pups, they are still so little and I don't want them getting sick...hence why they still do most of their awake and playtime in the box. They are only out when I am playing with and watching them.
