OMGosh! That is terrible! I hope your walk home was not the end of that. The owner of that pit should be held accountable.

I think the answer to your question is both. Often they are raised to be mean and they are also bred to be mean. Meaning that some breeders will breed the meanest with the meanest and well then you know what happens. I'm sure that's not what all breeders do but a good many do. I would never own one and wonder why anyone with children or smaller dogs would take that risk. I would not allow a puppy of mine to go to a household with one.

My comments are definately not directed at anyone here they are just my feelings on pit bulls and have always been.

oh no that was not the end of it, the cops were called and when they arrived they arrested the guy and shot the pitbull with something (not a gun) he dropped and they sprayed something in his nose...he looked dead but honestly I dont really know because I had my niece and my daughter with us so I stood with the kids while my cousin filed out a report. It was really sad. as soon as I saw the pitbull attack my cuz dog I had the girl turn around and we moved farther away so 1- we wouldnt get hurt and 2- they wouldnt have that visual in their minds :(

I have a question for you. What if you have a soon-to-be married couple or a newly wed couple that does not ever intend to have children? Just curious

I just wanted to step in this for a second.. Even though I'm not a breeder, if I was, I wouldn't let having a pitbull stop me from allowing someone to have one of my babies. No, they don't just wake up one day and decide to tear someone apart.. There are a lot of underlying problems and warning signs (abuse and what not) that regular owners don't pay attention to (which is why most attacks happen).. I just had to put my boy to sleep the beginning of the month and he was a 110lb american bulldog/pitbull mix. The breeders who I've gotten my last three yorkies from didn't let that stop them. He *LOVED* my yorkie to the point of almost mothering her. My boyfriend (who I basically live with) has a pitbull who sleeps with my yorkies. Extra caution has to be taken in regards to size and what not, but I would not judge one person (or one breed for that matter) just because of some negative stereotyping... Off my soap box..

Fair question. You know alot of newly weds go into their marriage with no intentions of having children.....and "most" change their mind. I've seen posts on YT.....with members wanting to rehome their yorkies because children have come into their lives.....

I've turned down several couples, because of this. No fault of theirs, children come into their lives and the new infant becomes a priority....as, it should be.

I have to usually go with my gut and statistics.....

I am sorry but I am a breeder and there is no way I would give one of my puppies to someone that has a pitbull.I ask alot of questions to the person wanting to buy a puppy, I ask about other pets, children, where the puppy will be living(I dont give my puppies to someone leaving them outside) a yorkie is not an outside dog.JMO I have a clause in case I find out the puppy is being mistreated or abused I have the right to take back the puppy. My best friend is with the Florida animal law enforcement department so it makes it easier to track the puppies. You have to remember that breeders look at their puppies as their children. We take precaution in placing them in homes just as you would have precautions for your children. The pitbull might not be vicious( never knew one that wasnt) but the size alone if the pitbull wanted to play with the yorkie, he/she could injury the Yorkie very easily, not meaning to. what if the Yorkie tried to take away a favorite toy or food??? So keep in mind that we are looking out for our babies. I know where all my puppies are, I keep in touch with the new owners, They send pictures and I send pictures back. and Yes I checked out their homes and the area that the puppy would be in before I placed my babies. I also have turned down alot of people that I felt would not be a good home for my little ones. I think a good breeder would be very picky about placing their babies in a home. You always want to make sure that they are safe. JMO

Then would you not allow a person with a labrador retriever to get a puppy? They are large dogs as well...

Any dog can 'go bad' for lack of better term due to many reasons outside the owners control. Regardless to how the dog has been raised, regardless to how it has behaved before or how well it has gotten along with the kids or other dogs. It can still happen, with ANY breed, not just Pits.

That being said and taken into consideration, if it happens with Pits and other certain breeds, that is a dog that poses a HUGE physical threat and has the body structure, size and strength to inflict some serious damage on anything standing in it's way if an when it happens. There is no amount of nurturing, training and observation that can change that fact. Is it unfortunate? Yes, but that just one of the factors you have to be willing to deal with.

I think that Pits have had a great disservice done to them because of so many idiots that end up owning them, but it is what it is. And for the record, I am VERY educated on the breed...more so than alot of Pit owners that I have met in my time. I have seen loving Pits, I know how they *can* be. But I've also seen the other side of them too and it's not pretty.

And on the otherside of that...I have a very good friend breeder/exhibitor who raises her yorkies along with dobies....now, mind you she doesn't leave them unattended...or lets them run together....but, her dobes are the sweetest.

Slade, why does it seem like your original post was just to provoke? You asked a question, and people gave their honest answers, and now it's a debate?

I will not place a puppy in a home that has a pit-bull.(or alot of other breeds) Yesterday, here in Az, the family pet pit-bull killed the 4 year old girl of the family. I will not place to a home where the Yorkie will spend most of the time out-doors or with families with small children. Swimming pools must be fenced so a Yorkie cant get to the pool. I want my puppies to go to loving forever homes only.

I'm not really sure how I feel about pitt bulls. I saw on our news tonight that an 11 year old boy was killed by the family's pitt bull. He and his 9 year old brother were playing in the house and the dog jumped off the couch and attacked the boy...by the time the mom and grandmother got the dog off the boy he was dead. I know there could be a lot more to the story...who knows what the dog's history was, how it was treated, etc...and I know sometimes the media calls dogs that attack pitt bulls when they aren't pitt bulls at all. I do know it's not a breed I would own..I'm just not a big fan of the "bully breed" look...I prefer small long-haired dogs

I think that the pit-bull is a breed that one needs to be extremely careful when getting one. Most are just bred willy nilly with no thought behind it. Most are only bred for fighting only. Look at DMX and Vick. Their only goal: to have a winning fighting machine. The ones that cant make the cut are cruelly disposed of. Any brains and common sense that this breed may have had, has been bred out by irresponsible breeders who either want a mindless fighting machine or want to complete the trailer trash, gangsta he-man look. I am not saying that all pits are like this. But I never met one that I liked or trusted, especially around my Yorkies.
