How picky are you? With who you place your babies with? I know it will vary from breeder to breeder as it varies from rescue to rescue, but i'd just like a general idea. I am not currently looking for a yorkie, but would love one sometime after I graduate in May and get moved and settled in a new house and start working. I plan to look at rescues and shelters first, but I was just curious how tough the application process would be if I did go to a breeder. What are some of your qualifications for new owners? For example, I own a pit bull, would this hinder me from being able to buy a pup from some breeders? I also plan to have kids one day (Hopefully!), so are breeders picky about placing their pups with people who dont' have kids but may have kids in the future. If I go to a breeder I would like to go to one who shows and titles their dogs and purchase a pet quality female pup since I don't ever plan to show or breed. How much should I be expecting to spend? |
i am extremely picky and have been known to cancel a couple of sale to YT members and one local because of things that came to light. I ALWAYS reserve the right to cancel the deal. I also have a questionaire on my website that I ask people to fill out. if they contact me but don't fill it out, they are automatically out. After I get the application, I read it over and if I have a good feeling, I email them a few times then before I commit, we speak on the phone and I generally go by my gut feeling. To answer your other question, no, I would not sale to you because of the pit bull. And what you can expect to spend variess. |
Over here, the pitbull would DQ (disqualify) you. If it was a smaller yorkie (3 1/2 -4 lbs, the small children would DQ you. That would be assuming we got that far through the screening process. I'm sure that show homes are pretty particular with whom they send they're pets to. |
Very picky. Honestly, I wouldn't let one of mine go to a home w/ a Pit Bull. As far as the children factor, depends on the size of the dog and the child. I'm not going to neccessarily turn away someone because they have children, but then again, I have to feel comfortable with the situation the dog would be going into. I would really scrutinize how the child acted around the dogs at my house and if it seem to be their natural action, or because of the nearby parents' constant reminders about how to handle the dogs. I have a 6 yr old child who has been around Yorkies for most of her life, so I know that not all children pose a threat. |
Pit The Pit Bull will stop 100% of the breeders I know..and I realize it is not always fair..many are wonderful pets..but we try pick a home where there is the least chance of a problem in the future. There are many breeders who will not ask or care..as to you having a family at some point is not a problem..the puppy will be grown..best wishes |
This is going to be my 1st litter but I can already tell you I will be very picky where my pups go. Is it wrong to ask for a home visit? |

I had a feeling having a pit bull would probably dq me from a lot of breeders and thats a shame, it really is. I am one of the best pet owners out there. All my babies are cared for, and no expense is spared on them. My Bichon lived til she was almost 20, and I don't even want to calculate up how much I spent on her, her last year of life ($5,000 at least I'm sure) and would have paid way more than that if there was anything else that could have been done for her. My babes have everything they could need or want. My pittie is a complete sweetheart and has done fantastically with ALL the dogs I have fostered. It really is sad that a bunch of thugs have ruined the breed. But at any rate, I completely understand that they are the breeders dogs and they can be as picky as they wish about homes. i know I am super picky when it comes to my rescues. When the time comes in several months, I'm sure Iwill either be able to find a rescue, or a good breeder that understands my pit bull isn't an evil killing machine. |

How Picky I'm a show/breeder. And the pit bull would stop me from placing a yorkie in your home. You say you plan to have children some day, are you currently in a relationship, soon to be married? I don't place my puppies with newly weds. Young couples plan to have children and pups are then put to the back burner. The new infant becomes a priority, as it should be. But, I don't want my pups having to be rehomed, or worse yet in rescue. I don't place my pups in homes where the children are younger than the age of 12. I do home visits, and don't ship.... |
I am very picky where my babies are placed. I have to say a pit would definitely stop me from considering you at all. I know not all Pits are attack dogs, but their temperament is not what I feel comfy with. I don't place my babies with small children in the home either. I like to get to know the new parents and I also tend to refuse people often if I feel even abit uncomfortable. I hope you understand that most responsible breeders do check very closely, because it is our responsibility where our babies grow up. We bring them into the world and although they go to new homes we still have a responsibility that lasts their lifetime!! |
My reasoning is. Yes, Pits can be big ole teddy bears. But as sweet as they or any dog really is, any time you have dogs together, there are going to be times when one did something the other didn't like and they get a little snippy to let the other know how they feel. When a Pit gets snippy, regardless of how meaningless, it's still a Pit getting snippy and when its directed at a smaller dog, there stands the potential for some serious damage to be done.:( |

Do you have a link to the story where the pit killed the kid? I have yet to see a story where a pit bull just "snapped". Most of the time the dog in the story isn't even a pit bull, the media just classify's them as so. most of the dogs that have attacked have not been properly socialized, have been taught to be mean, have been chained and not feed. From day 1, Delaney has been in my house, well feed, well trained, very well socialized... for her first year of life I made it a point to take her to the park or somewhere else she could meet new dogs, people, kids, etc. Mardelin, I'm not in a relationship, so I'm not about to be married. If I did have kids, the dogs would NOT be going anywhere. They were my babies first and always will be. There is NO circumstances under which I would rehome either of my dogs. I guess my search will end up being harder than most peoples, but I won't go to a BYB or pet store to satisfy my want for a yorkie. |

I have tried so many times to get to the bottom of this question...are pitbulls naturally vicious or are they raised that way. You get all types of answers. I was in the park with my cousin who was walking her chihuahua out of nowhere a pitbull came and attacked him :( my cousin was screaming and the owner of the pit was yelling for her to let go off the leash that her dog was dead. that pitbull proceeded to walk around the park with the dog hanging out of his mouth. I was mortified. we cried so much walking home. ever since that day I stay away from them and have my kids far from them too. its like his owner told my cuz...Im so sorrythis never happened before he is so loving. |

I think the answer to your question is both. Often they are raised to be mean and they are also bred to be mean. Meaning that some breeders will breed the meanest with the meanest and well then you know what happens. I'm sure that's not what all breeders do but a good many do. I would never own one and wonder why anyone with children or smaller dogs would take that risk. I would not allow a puppy of mine to go to a household with one. My comments are definately not directed at anyone here they are just my feelings on pit bulls and have always been. |
oh no that was not the end of it, the cops were called and when they arrived they arrested the guy and shot the pitbull with something (not a gun) he dropped and they sprayed something in his nose...he looked dead but honestly I dont really know because I had my niece and my daughter with us so I stood with the kids while my cousin filed out a report. It was really sad. as soon as I saw the pitbull attack my cuz dog I had the girl turn around and we moved farther away so 1- we wouldnt get hurt and 2- they wouldnt have that visual in their minds :( |

I just wanted to step in this for a second.. Even though I'm not a breeder, if I was, I wouldn't let having a pitbull stop me from allowing someone to have one of my babies. No, they don't just wake up one day and decide to tear someone apart.. There are a lot of underlying problems and warning signs (abuse and what not) that regular owners don't pay attention to (which is why most attacks happen).. I just had to put my boy to sleep the beginning of the month and he was a 110lb american bulldog/pitbull mix. The breeders who I've gotten my last three yorkies from didn't let that stop them. He *LOVED* my yorkie to the point of almost mothering her. My boyfriend (who I basically live with) has a pitbull who sleeps with my yorkies. Extra caution has to be taken in regards to size and what not, but I would not judge one person (or one breed for that matter) just because of some negative stereotyping... Off my soap box.. |

I've turned down several couples, because of this. No fault of theirs, children come into their lives and the new infant becomes a priority....as, it should be. I have to usually go with my gut and statistics..... |
I am sorry but I am a breeder and there is no way I would give one of my puppies to someone that has a pitbull.I ask alot of questions to the person wanting to buy a puppy, I ask about other pets, children, where the puppy will be living(I dont give my puppies to someone leaving them outside) a yorkie is not an outside dog.JMO I have a clause in case I find out the puppy is being mistreated or abused I have the right to take back the puppy. My best friend is with the Florida animal law enforcement department so it makes it easier to track the puppies. You have to remember that breeders look at their puppies as their children. We take precaution in placing them in homes just as you would have precautions for your children. The pitbull might not be vicious( never knew one that wasnt) but the size alone if the pitbull wanted to play with the yorkie, he/she could injury the Yorkie very easily, not meaning to. what if the Yorkie tried to take away a favorite toy or food??? So keep in mind that we are looking out for our babies. I know where all my puppies are, I keep in touch with the new owners, They send pictures and I send pictures back. and Yes I checked out their homes and the area that the puppy would be in before I placed my babies. I also have turned down alot of people that I felt would not be a good home for my little ones. I think a good breeder would be very picky about placing their babies in a home. You always want to make sure that they are safe. JMO |
Then would you not allow a person with a labrador retriever to get a puppy? They are large dogs as well... |
Who's the vicious one here? http://s43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...rrent=GD10.jpg http://s43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...andLaney01.jpg http://s43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...wkslade8-1.jpg http://s43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...=9wkSlade2.jpg http://s43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...=9wkslade3.jpg http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...ley/Diego9.jpg http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e3...yandLaners.jpg PIT BULLS actually did better in the American Temperment test than YORKIES did- http://www.atts.org/statistics.html If any one is truly interested in educating themselves on the breed here is a good link- http://www.badrap.org/rescue/myths.cfm |
Any dog can 'go bad' for lack of better term due to many reasons outside the owners control. Regardless to how the dog has been raised, regardless to how it has behaved before or how well it has gotten along with the kids or other dogs. It can still happen, with ANY breed, not just Pits. That being said and taken into consideration, if it happens with Pits and other certain breeds, that is a dog that poses a HUGE physical threat and has the body structure, size and strength to inflict some serious damage on anything standing in it's way if an when it happens. There is no amount of nurturing, training and observation that can change that fact. Is it unfortunate? Yes, but that just one of the factors you have to be willing to deal with. I think that Pits have had a great disservice done to them because of so many idiots that end up owning them, but it is what it is. And for the record, I am VERY educated on the breed...more so than alot of Pit owners that I have met in my time. I have seen loving Pits, I know how they *can* be. But I've also seen the other side of them too and it's not pretty. |
And on the otherside of that...I have a very good friend breeder/exhibitor who raises her yorkies along with dobies....now, mind you she doesn't leave them unattended...or lets them run together....but, her dobes are the sweetest. |
Slade, why does it seem like your original post was just to provoke? You asked a question, and people gave their honest answers, and now it's a debate? |
I will not place a puppy in a home that has a pit-bull.(or alot of other breeds) Yesterday, here in Az, the family pet pit-bull killed the 4 year old girl of the family. I will not place to a home where the Yorkie will spend most of the time out-doors or with families with small children. Swimming pools must be fenced so a Yorkie cant get to the pool. I want my puppies to go to loving forever homes only. |
Omg..... "Picky" is my middle name, don't ya know....:):) On the other side of the coin, I might add.... :D |

I think that the pit-bull is a breed that one needs to be extremely careful when getting one. Most are just bred willy nilly with no thought behind it. Most are only bred for fighting only. Look at DMX and Vick. Their only goal: to have a winning fighting machine. The ones that cant make the cut are cruelly disposed of. Any brains and common sense that this breed may have had, has been bred out by irresponsible breeders who either want a mindless fighting machine or want to complete the trailer trash, gangsta he-man look. I am not saying that all pits are like this. But I never met one that I liked or trusted, especially around my Yorkies. |
