Thor plays with another dog, almost!
One of Thor's New Year's resolutions is to have a real play session with another dog. He seems to be getting a little bit more comfortable with other dogs.
We were at the park last week and Thor greeted a Pomeranian beautifully. They did nice nose to nose greetings, and then side to side. Thor at this point thought the meeting was over and ran back to me. The pomeranian came over and wanted to play, which seemed to mystify Thor. He will make play bows to me, but I'm not sure he understands that other dogs do them too. Usually if he likes another dog, he will "Army Crawl" in front of them. In any case, he tried showing his belly to the pom and then finally resorted to hiding behind me.
Today, we ran into a Chihuahua who also works in my office with his human. Thor kind of, sort of played with him. He army crawled around the chi, and tried to get him to chase him. The chi seemed a little confused about what was going on, and after he was prevented from humping Thor, lost interest.
I believe Thor will be playing with other dogs his size by the end of the year. It is taking a lot longer than I expected, but I am starting to think that he was traumatized as a puppy (he is most likely from a puppy mill). It's also possible that he has a genetic predisposition to shyness, but I think that's less likely because he isn't shy around humans in the slightest. In fact, he's generally pretty pushy and shamelessly begs for food. He's lucky he's cute.
I'm also thinking of starting up a play group in my area for tiny, adult toy dogs. Thor is 4 pounds, so even in a toy play group, some of the dogs are almost twice as big as he is. I'd like to start a group where the max weight is 4 pounds, so Thor will have a chance to feel big.
