I recommend you get yourself a book. I am using:

Dr. Pitcain's cains complete guide to natural health for dogs and cats and

Real food for dogs-50 vet-approved recipes to please the caninine gastronome by Arden Moore

I've been home feeding since shortly after the recall began, and I won't go back to commercial food! The Pitcairn book suggested is a great book on this subject. The recipe listed below if from the linked site.

Diet for adult dogs

Amounts given are adequate for one day's feeding of a 20-35 pound dog (depending on age & activity level). Adjust amounts of ingredients and supplements proportionally for your dog's weight. Starches may be decreased in case of digestive problems or for weight loss.

Choose one protein source (meat amounts given in raw weight)

1/3 pound boneless chicken breast or thigh, chopped
3 large hard-boiled eggs, chopped
1/3 pound lean bison, lamb, or organic beef, ground or minced
Optional: once a week, substitute 4 oz organic liver for 1/2 of any meat source

Choose one starch source

2 cups cooked macaroni
3 cups cooked potato, with skin, chopped or mashed
2 cups cooked rice
2 cups rolled oats, quick, cooked
Supplements (per 20-35# per day)

pureed veggie mix, raw or steamed (up to 1 cup)
1 tablespoon olive oil, or 1/2 tbsp olive and 1/2 tbsp flaxseed oil
400 mg calcium (elemental, as calcium citrate or carbonate)
or 1200 mg (approximately 1-1/2 tsp) bone meal powder (human grade)
1/4 tsp salt substitute (potassium chloride) - give 3 or 4 times a week
1 multiple vitamin-mineral supplement (human quality) dose adjusted for weight
1 probiotic/digestive enzyme supplement

Yep That's the same book I'm using...It's wonderful!! and very informative. The recipes are awesome too

we are using it too!! such a great book.. last week layla had veal, brown rice, split peas and a bit of carrot.. i'm cooking tomorrow and using lean hamburger, oatmeal and some carrotts.. she is LOVING IT!!!!

for those homecooking i was wondering if we could please compare what we are giving for suppliements, how much and when

Layla gets the "Healthy Powder" put right into the food
also she is getting about 1/2 capsule of Omega 3 and 6
1/2 capsule of Vitamin E
a vitamin A/D
and i just bought some B vitamins which have to be divided into 10...

the book i find amazing, but a bit overwhelming with all the extra vitamins and such that they need... i love the "Healthy Poweder" bbecause it includes so many but i want to make sure she is getting all that she needs... oh she also gets a bit of Extra Bone Meal, in the amount that the book says!

Mine hasn't had the lentils yet, but she looooves ground turkey, and oats and veggies! I can't believe how much my two furbabies love homecooked meals I'll have to try those lentils next time, my picky eaters have become little piggies

That's basically what we do also I follow the supplements exactly as they specify in the book because I want to make sure they're getting enough of everything. I thought it was overwhelming also, but Vitamin World is having a sale this Monday and Tuesday. Buy one get one free for everything in their store. They sell everything there except the kelp powder, bone meal, and I didn't see nutritional yeast. I only saw the brewer's yeast. You can get the kelp powder, KAL Bone meal, and the nutritional yeast on Amazon.com

Barkers Grub (don't know who it is by though). It is a dog cookbook.

Thought I would throw that one out there too!

You could ease into it too (like me);here's what I'm feeding for various meals:

--canned human chicken & add rice; Missing Link sprinkled on top (they go NUTS for the canned chicken)

--Embark from Honest Kitchen; sometimes w/ some chicken thrown in if Marcel is being picky; Missing Link

--"Graduates" toddler "sausages" mushed up w/ added rice; Missing Link

These are easier for me than going all the way to real home cooking.

I use this recipe except I use frozen peas/green beans/carrots mixture and add a crumbled boiled egg. italian herbs for flavor and soy sauce (real light on the seasoning of course)

My mom is homecooking for Ellie. I don't know how I got out of this one except I don't cook . Besides she loves Ellie just as much as I do. Ellie get either boneless, skinless chicken breast, ground turkey or next will be turkey breast for her meat. She gets some rice and/or peas and for veggies she gets two or more of carrots, green pepper, zuccini, yellow squash and green beans. A lot of days she will get one heaping teaspoonful of plain yogurt or cottage cheese. For treats she gets pieces of raw veggies (lettuce is her favorite), pieces of apple and pieces of banana. She is also allowed to have Cloud Star sweet potato treats. She will be getting vitamins when I get a book and figure it all out.

That's how I feel. I'd like to, but adding all those extras seems entirely to difficult.
