| ![]() If this isn't the best place to post this, please feel free to move or remove. My sweet little Yorkie, my little constant companion, crossed the Rainbow Bridge in May. I miss having her with me, and the house is just empty. I guess I'm doing what I would call a "soft search," and I'm checking places like AKC Marketplace. I have seen what I guess are like brokers; GoodDog and Puppy Spot. Are these sites legit, or are they just onine puppy mills? Any guidance you can give is appreciated. Thanks! |

| ![]() Brokers buy litters of puppies, most likely from puppy mills. Stay away from brokers.

So how are sites like Good Dog or Puppy Spot different than AKC Marketplace? Apparently Good Dog puts you in touch directly with other breeders that they supposedly vette. I asked them for breeders that are part of AKC (only two came up that were close to where I live). And then they had breeders in other states that were WAY the heck away from where I am (?!) with puppy Nannies who supposedly fly with the dog (?!) I would much rather go through AKC, but I don't see how these other sites have such good reviews. I'd rather see the puppy in person. I trust AKC because I know them, but if there are AKC breeders on these other sites as well as AKC, then are these breeders legit? I'm so confused... | |

| ![]() AKC is not a place to find a reputable breeder. From the web, this is all the AKC does: Is AKC registered important? The benefits of owning a dog registered by The Kennel Club are: Your dog will display the characteristics of the breed, in both looks and temperament; you will be able to breed from your dog and register the puppies with The Kennel Club; your paw-some pet will be able to take part in shows and activities licensed by ... This is not to say AKC is not good, it is. Most reputable breeders do register their dogs with AKC. Just keep in mind it is not a measure of what kind of breeder you are dealing with. If you want a reputable breeder, a good place to start looking is the breed club: The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America There is not a lot on there, but they do have some local clubs you could contact for info on breeders. It is confusing for people looking, but if you want a reputable breeder, you need to be careful. One of the most important things is if they test their breeding dogs for the genetic conditions that have markers ... www.ofa.org I personally would not purchase a puppy from a breeder who did not test with OFA. There are other things to consider. I will see if I can find a good thread here on YT for screening breeders.

| ![]() I got my new puppy from the same breeder I got my Maggie from over 14 years ago. Maggie passed away in April. My new puppy, Bridget, was born in April. I had kept in contact with the breeder from time to time, and after Maggie passed we were in contact quite a bit. She had one little female yorkie pup and I quickly put a deposit on her. It was a 6 hour drive each way to go pick her up, but well worth it. Is she a high dollar big profile breeder? No, I don't think so. But she has been a breeder for many years. I feel comfortable with her and still have been in communication with her. I am not sure if/how this helps you, but keep searching. Those online pet brokers charge a lot. I think they are almost double the price of what the breeder charges directly. I know my breeder has some puppies on puppies.com, or her direct website is https://www.lovealotkennels.com.
